A Bit ABout Boulder County Horse AssoCiAtion
The Boulder County Horse Association promotes, protects and unifies the
equestrian community of Boulder County through education, recreation and
legislation . BCHA incorporated in 1971 as a Colorado non-profit corporation .
In 1998 we obtained our 501(c)3 status from the Internal Revenue Service, enabling
contributions to the organization to be tax-deductible .
As an umbrella organization for all horse-related interests in Boulder
County, we strive to present a unified voice on equestrian issues to regional govern-
ments and to the public . One of BCHA’s primary goals is to keep horses viable
in Boulder County .
BCHA promotes the acquisition of open space and parks, and supports an
interconnected system of multiple-use trails . We are an organizational member of the
Boulder Area Trails Coalition and the Colorado Horse Council .
Over the years BCHA has worked closely with Boulder County to formu-
late a set of horsekeeping guidelines in the Land Use Code which ”work“ for most
horse owners, yet enable the County to enforce reasonable regulations should
the need arise .
BCHA ACTIVITIES include:
• Monthly Board meetings: Usually the first Monday evening of every month.
Members and guests welcome .
• Annual Meeting: Each February, electing the Board of Directors and featuring
a guest speaker .
• Clinics and Seminars are presented throughout the year. These are free to BCHA
members and open to the public . Topics range from polo to carcass disposal .
• Trail Rides: BCHA offers weekly organized, though informal, trail rides to members .
• Trail Building and Maintenance: In 1986 BCHA adopted and built the Doudy
Draw Trail near Eldorado Springs for the City of Boulder Open Space and has
conducted annual maintenance on this trail ever since . BCHA participates in
National Trails Day projects, and our members are active in State and Federal
trail-policy planning forums .
• Public Lands Appreciation Day: A casual social occasion each fall bringing public
lands officials and Boulder County’s horse community together with wagon and
horse trail rides and a picnic!
• Horse Lovers’ Fling: Annual fundraiser event, usually in the spring, featuring
silent auction and entertainment . .
8
• Fun Show: Annual fall program bringing adults and kids together across all
disciplines for a relaxed event at the Boulder County Fairgrounds .
• CART: As a County Animal Response Team member, BCHA works with other
animal organizations and professionals preparing for animal emergencies such as
wildland fires or disease outbreaks .
• HOOF: Horse Owners' Operation Find, in conjunction with the Boulder Sheriff’s
Animal Control officers, helps reunite horses and owners when a horse is on
the loose .
• Publications:
The Horse’s Mouth – BCHA’s bi-monthly newsletter, educates our members about
horse-related issues . Articles include upcoming events, potential legislative im-
pacts on horses, trail descriptions, and information about caring for our horses .
Horse Services Directory - Published approximately every five years, a handy
reference for equestrian services and products in our area .
Happy Trails - Several volumes of trail logs in and around Boulder County .
Sharing Trails Safely with Horses - Brochure produced with funding from
Colorado State Parks and the Colorado Horse Development Authority to help
all trail users be safe .

The “Horseman of the Year Award” was established in 1991 in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Boulder County Horseman’s Association (founded in 1971) . To better reflect our mission and membership, the name of the award was changed in 2000 to “BCHA Achievement Award” and the organization changed its name to “Boulder County Horse Association” in 2001 .
The award is given to the person(s) who have given exceptional amounts of their expertise, time, or other contributions to the horse community of Boulder County . The award consists of a walnut plaque with a three-dimensional golden horse statue, and a green plate that reads “In recognition and appreciation of your inspiration and dedication on behalf of our equestrian interests .”

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the Boulder County Horse Association and
the Colorado Department of Agriculture recommend that Boulder County horse
owners microchip their horses .
Equine microchipping is on its way to being a standard procedure, as it already
is now with dogs and cats . Disease traceability, emergency preparedness, and theft
prevention are the main reasons for microchipping horses .
The #1 reason is disease traceability . A few years ago in Colorado, it took the
Department of Agriculture 12 months to track down 995 horses exposed to CEM
(contagious equine metritis) . If the horses had been chipped, the disease could have
been contained quickly .
The importance of traceability was learned from the mad cow disease outbreak
in Britain several years ago . Since it was a slow process to trace the movement of
cattle, the disease spread and a huge number of cattle had to be euthanized . While
most dairy cattle in the U .S . are chipped, Canada no longer allows U .S . beef cattle
into their country since they tend not to be chipped .
During Colorado’s Hayman Fire it was not only slow to reunite horses with
owners, but difficult for emergency personnel to determine the location of horses
needing to be rescued . After the fire, owners learned from the experience andhave
now chipped 90% of the horses in that area . In contrast, the primary reason we
heard so little about horses affected by Hurricane Katrina is that Louisiana requires
chipping and horses there were easily reunited with their owners .
In Colorado alone the Brand Board reunites owners with $33 million worth of
lost and stolen livestock each year . This figure could be increased with chipping, and
the process of returning the animals could be accelerated .
As of 2009 all European Union horses are being chipped . Many U .S breed
associations now require chipping, including Fjords and Friesians . Alpacas in this
country are also now chipped .

The incidence of adverse reactions appears to be negligible . Microchips are
about the size of a grain of rice . They are inserted half way between the poll and
withers 4 centimeters from the long hairs of the mane on the left side of the neck .
Since they are inserted in a ligament they will not migrate . Boulder County horse
owners are encouraged to discuss chipping with their veterinarian .
The scanners used to read chips are becoming more standardized, but there is
still some variability in the equipment, as is the consistency of agencies and vets
checking for chips in horses . The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control
now checks all small animals for chips, whereas ten years ago it did not . This will
be the trend for horses soon .
Some people are concerned that the need to have Premises Identification
Number (PIN) is intrusive . However, the purpose of the PIN serves solely to deter-
mine where the livestock is located . Multiple contacts can be put on each chip if
desired .
Microchipping is not to be confused with the Brand Inspections required by
16 states, which determine livestock ownership .
You or your boarding facility will need to obtain a Premises Identification
Number (PIN) before your horse can be chipped .
PINs can be obtained by calling Chris King at 303-239-4516 or 1-877-842-0102 .
You may also visit their website at www .COanimalID .org .
The cost is minimal but may vary by practitioner . The Boulder County Horse
Association has offered several low-cost microchipping clinics for members, includ-
ing a small donation to BCHA .
For a nominal fee, you can have the peace of mind of knowing that your
horses will be recovered if they’ve gone missing .

by Nancy S. Loving, DVM
It’s a popular myth that the way to provide your horse with energy and extra calories is by feeding grain . However, the field of equine science has shown us that grain is not all it’s cracked up to be, particularly when it comes to equine intestinal health .
dIgest IOn LOgIst Ics
To understand how your horse’s intestines extract nutrients, consider that horses, as herbivore grazers, evolved to eat plants . The hindgut acts like a huge fermentation vat where intestinal microbes digest cellulose from high-fiber forage sources to produce energy-rich volatile fatty acids (VFAs) . Hay and pasture pro-vide forage, also referred to as “structural” carbohydrates . Another energy-rich source of plant sugars and starches is called “non-struc-tural” carbohydrates (NSC) – these fuel many body functions . For example, the brain and hooves thrive on glucose while the joint constituent, glucosamine, is made of sugar components . Fructan, a common NSC sugar, is stored in plant leaves and stalks while starch is stored in plant seed heads, or grains . Forage is the mainstay of your horse’s dietary needs and should comprise the bulk of his diet . Following a high-fiber meal, blood glucose circulates at steady, even levels . In contrast, concentrates (grains) elicit large surges in blood glucose that stimulates surges of insulin hormone . This glycemic response attempts to store excess glucose as glycogen in the muscles and liver . However, horses evolved to rely on a steady state of insulin production that keeps blood glucose at a con-sistent level .
gRaIn-ReLated heaLth hazaRds
Hormonal changes aren’t the only adverse effects on intestinal health caused by high NSC feed . Fermentation products of grain can damage the stomach lining – the extent of injury depends on the amount of grain ingested . To further com-plicate matters, excess sugar or starch (grain) that can’t be handled by small intes-tinal enzymes spills into a horse’s hindgut in an undigested form . In the hindgut, large amounts of NSCs elicit a feeding frenzy by lactic-acid bacteria, leading to a population explosion . Additional lactic acid production kills favorable fiber-fer-menting bacteria and damages the intestinal lining . Increased permeability of a ‘leaky gut’ allows passage of large molecules that ordinarily don’t enter the blood-stream – these may trigger events that cause laminitis . Excess gas produced by over-fermentation of grains potentially leads to intestinal motility issues and colic .

In addition, horses fed high-calorie concentrates tend to consume less forage, which in turn creates conditions for development of gastric and colonic ulcers . You can see that many health hazards directly relate to grain consumption, particularly if fed in large amounts: Gastric or colonic ulcers, colic, laminitis, insu-lin resistance, polysaccharide storage myopathy, HYPP, and mycotoxin ingestion . Normal horses tend to be borderline ‘diabetic’ compared to humans, dogs, and cats, likely as a survival response to handle feast or famine in the wild – cal-orie abundance in warm months carried wild horses through lean times in fall and winter . The problem for many domesticated horses is that it is ‘feast’ all the time without the calorie burn of sufficient exercise . When muscle cells contain ample glycogen, the body turns to storing fat . Insulin resistance (IR) is a big problem created by obesity even in horses that are not genetically predisposed to this condition . The more sugar and NSCs con-sumed, the more insulin is produced . Yet, despite ample glucose circulating in the bloodstream, cells “starve” because they have developed resistance to the normal effects of insulin – the response is to lay down even more fat . Insulin resistance is not necessarily a disease as much as it is caused by an inappropriate diet . The effects of obesity in horses are just being understood . As in humans, fat is no longer considered an inert tissue, but one that actively releases inflammatory mediators that affect other body systems . An overabundance of dietary starch and sugar is especially dangerous to a horse with low calorie requirements, or those fed large, NSC-rich meals twice daily with long intervening fasting intervals .
ReducIng R Isks Of gRaIn
The best protective strategy for equine intestinal health is to eliminate or at least limit grain . Not every horse needs grain or supplements . But for horses requiring extra calories to maintain body condition, you can reduce the risk of grain entering the hindgut by limiting the size of each grain meal: Feed no more than 0 .4% of a horse’s body weight (4 pounds of grain for 1000 # horse) . It is best to offer small quantities 3-4 times per day, with at least 5-hour intervals between grain feedings – this limits intestinal exposure beneath a “threshold level” of damaging digestive substrates . Weigh grain rather than feeding by volume . Better yet, offer an alternative hi-calorie food source .
hI -caLORIe aLteRnat Ives
Many riders complain about dealing with “too much horse” when feeding grain . Then the horse intimidates the rider and receives less exercise, creating a vicious cycle . Try eliminating all grain to see if your horse is more relaxed and better mannered with a longer attention span .
That said, it’s an oversimplification to think that all horse diets should elimi-nate supplements – some horses need relatively high NSC levels to fuel their type and level of rigorous performance . And, individual horses vary in their blood sugar and insulin responses to a meal . Many recreational horses don’t need sweet in their feed yet feeding low NSC is not a ‘one size fits all’ situation . Choice of a commercial low-NSC product should account for more than the just presence or absence of sugars . Remember to evaluate the nutrient content of the total diet rather than a sole ingredient . Alternative supplements are available to keep your exercising horse in good body condition . Fat is a safe and concentrated energy source, well digested by horses . Fat is supplemented with vegetable oil, rice bran or commercially formu-lated high-fat feed . Two cups of oil is the caloric equivalent to 3 .3 lbs of oats, 2 .6 lbs of corn, or 2 .5 lbs of sweet feed . Complete feed pellets are composed mostly of readily digestible fiber, but also contain about 25 % grain . Pelleted complete feeds are a safe alternative to supple-ment or substitute for some hay . Beet pulp is a fiber-based energy food that provides safe calories . Beet pulp, without added molasses, maintains a horse’s glycemic response in a safe range . Up to a pound of beet pulp (dry weight then soaked to volume) can be fed daily with no adjustments made to the amount of hay fed . Each additional pound of beet pulp fed can substitute for 1 .5 pounds of hay .
the BOttOm L Ine
Overfeeding or imbalanced diets are just as serious mal-nutritional problems as starvation . It is not necessary to ‘love’ your horse with a feed scoop . Confining a horse to a stall and feeding large meals twice daily while only riding occasional-ly isn’t in your horse’s best interest . Horses evolved to graze and nibble rather than stand in front of a feed trough consuming easy-serve meals . Sedentary life-styles are harder on horses than any individual dietary constituent – turnout is important for musculoskeletal and mental health . You may not realize it, but a horse roaming on dry-land pasture may travel as much as three miles a day while grazing . The equine digestive system is more motile and functional when a horse moves around . An overweight horse benefits from a grazing muzzle that limits pasture intake yet allows him to keep moving in turnout . Body condition of every horse on your property should be observed on a regular basis . Adjust feed programs tailored to each individual by consulting with your veterinarian . By maintaining your horse in lean condition, you’ll maximize your horse’s long-term health and excellence in performance .

Boulder County Animal Control, under the direction of the Boulder County Sheriff, services and protects all unincorporated areas of Boulder County. We want you to be prepared in case of an emergency or disaster situa-tion. That is why Animal Control is collecting information on your barn with our Barn Information Sheet. This information will not be disseminated to the general public, and will be used in emergency situations to notify the barn manager or primary contact of the impending situation and the options available to them.

When a disaster occurs there may be a need to evacuate your animals to a safer location. Do you have a safe place to take them? Perhaps you have an agreement with another facility or a friend with property who can temporar-ily house and care for your animals. If you have a contingency plan in place before an emergency occurs than you can ensure the safety of your animals. Animal Control utilizes the Boulder County Fairgrounds to house animals in disaster situations, but room and resources can be limited.

• Do you have horse trailers on site for transporting? Do you have enough trailer room for all of the animals? Can all of the horses be haltered and loaded into a trailer safely?• Do you have registration, brand inspection papers, photos, medical records, medications and a first aid kit ready to go? • If you need to shelter in place, do you have enough food, water and supplies on the property to sustain 72 hours on your own?• A great resource for information is CSU Cooperative Extension at www.ext.colostate.edu and look under wildfire in online publications. There you will find Wildfire Preparedness for Horse Owners.
