Banned Books Read-Out Invokes Critical Thinking
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2013)—SUNY Plattsburgh’s Feinberg Library will host the
second annual Banned Books Read Out from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the
Feinberg Library lobby.
The event features students, faculty and staff reading excerpts from selections of the top
100 banned/challenged books from 2000 to 2009.Titles include I Know Why The Caged
Bird Sings, Slaughterhouse-Five, Speak, Black Boy, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Kite Runnerand
In The Night Kitchen.
“The idea is to raise awareness of the many intellectual, political and social issues that are
seldom found in a public setting,” says Cerise Oberman, distinguished librarian at Feinberg
Library, “and to highlight their importance, especially in the college community.”
The reading is a “drop-in” event, allowing participants to either stay for the full two hours
or stop by for a reading or two.
Participants interested in reading a selection can contact Cerise Oberman at 518-564-5184
