The Beatitudes: happiness in God!
Last Sunday we made memory of the two basic words of Christian life: conversion of heart
and the call of Jesus.
Today, in the Sermon of the Mount, we remember another basic word: happiness.
In Today’s Gospel, Matthew tells us that Jesus went up the mountain, not like Moses to deliver
us the Law of “NO”, but to deliver us His best commandment that is not about limits that we
do not need to negotiate, but to show us new horizons and speaks about todays happiness.
The beatitudes of Jesus that we proclaimed are attitudes of the heart. That is the gospel, and the
gospel can only be lived from the love of God and our brothers and sisters. The Beatitudes
don’t say anything about worship, prayer or fasting, It is all about the human, the true human
issues.
Today, you and I are living in a desecrated and paganized world.
Religion is a nuisance for many people, it gets in our way, it embarrasses us and them we just
get rid of it. Ted Turner the famous writer says that Religion is for losers.
Jesus speaks of happiness, His happiness, because he knows that humans cannot live without
it.
Blessed, blessed be, happy ... the poor, the meek, the pure in heart, the peacemakers ...
To make the beatitudes be real, we need to pay attention to the second part, the promises that
contain: they shall inherit the earth, they shall be comforted, they are children of God ....
Christians see the world with the eyes of God, with His plan of salvation, we do not see with
the lenses of Wall Street.
These eight joys of Jesus need to be meditated and lived out in our daily lives. To these Joys
we will need to add one more. The joy of being Christian.
To be Christian is to be happy and be a sign of happiness to others. Happiness and joy are the
best business card for evangelization.
In this society that has "lost benchmarks" we are happy to be Christians, we choose solidarity
with our brothers and sisters living in poverty, pain, persecution, tears, human situations that
sadden Jesus and the reason why He came to heal.
Jesus invites us , not to be His fans, but His followers, to look outside and be the source of
happiness to others!
