AUTORIV A230-BI: Mobile robotic tools – joining processes
The quality of the fastener to be processed limits or maximizes the possibilities of automation.
A fastener that is optimally matched to the automated processing ensures extremely high availability. For this reason, AUTORIV® consistently offers fasteners that are designed to f it the associated automation.
The AUTORIV® A230-BI mobile robotic tool stands for a fully automatic, process-safe and high-quality processing of blind rivet nuts and blind rivet bolts with thread sizes M5 to M10 for nuts and M5 to M8 for bolts.
Variable connections in thin and thick sheet metal or plastic:
Blind rivet nuts (N) of the AUTORIV®-BI series with pilot hole in the component
Blind rivet bolts (N) of the AUTORIV®-BI series with pilot hole in the component
Nuts are available in round and hexagonal versions:
Outer diameter or head diameter is min. 10 mm to max. 22 mm
Total height is min. 13 mm to max. 30 mm
Bolt fasteners are available in a round shape:
The processable shank length of the bolts is max. 30 mm
The outer diameter of the head is min. 10 mm to max. 22 mm
AUTORIV® also offers further special fasteners for customer-specif ic applications.

AUTORIV A230-BI: Mobile robotic tools – functionality
The AUTORIV®-BI is attached to the robot and is transferred to the component.
The robot places the setting unit on the component.
The supervisory control clears the fastener for insertion. The setting process starts as soon as a fastener is in the insertion position.
The feeding of the fasteners and the electrical components are located outside of the robot cell fence. The fasteners are f illed into the feeding hopper with a large capacity.
An integrated displacement measuring system gives the start signal for the insertion as soon as a fastener is in the clinching position.
If deviations from the specif ied values (e. g. component thickness or height of the fastener) occur, the insertion process is cancelled and an error message is issued to the supervisory control. This virtually eliminates the possibility of incorrect insertion.
The setting process is pressure-controlled. When the specif ied pressure is reached, an „OK message“ (setting process successful) is issued. If the pressure is not reached, the system issues an error and forwards the corresponding signal to the supervisory control.
The positional tolerances of all blind rivet fasteners can be adjusted by AUTORIV®‘s patented active tolerance compensation system of up to max. ± 0.5 mm.
Examples of possible applications:
front and rear flap
supporting part bumper
battery console / battery holder
fender bracket
cross beam
crash box

AUTORIV A230-BI: Mobile robotic tools – insertion unit
The AUTORIV® A230-BI setting unit is generally designed for the processing of blind rivet fasteners. The force is controlled by a hydropneumatic pressure booster and a hydraulic cylinder. The setting unit is carried by the robot. It already contains part of the electrical and pneumatic components. For the AUTORIV® A230-BI an additional pneumatic box that contains all the electric and pneumatic elements is used. Furthermore, the hydropneumatic booster is located on the frame of the pneumatic box.
Example: AUTORIV® A230-BI setting unit with options:
Standard Options
Controlled process monitoring (query f inal pressure / end position and output OK / NOK)
AUTORIV insertion unit: Multi-position cylinder for loading and working position

AUTORIV A230-BI: Mobile robotic tools – feeding system
The AUTORIV® A230-BI setting unit is designed to be combined with an AUTORIV® A000 feeding system. The feeding system accommodates the control of the insertion unit as well as the interface to the super-visory control.
The feeding unit is installed outside of the robot cell and is thus easily accessible. By means of various electromechanical processes it stocks, sorts and separates the fasteners. Afterwards, the fasteners are fed to the insertion unit with compressed air via a special shot tube. The available interface connections are hardware signals, Prof inet, Prof ibus, DeviceNet and Ethernet/IP. One feeding unit can supply up to two insertion units with the same fastener.

AUTORIV A230-BI: Mobile robotic tools – process monitoring and evaluation
The process monitoring of the AUTORIV® A230-BI setting unit can be carried out in different ways. Whether an insertion process was successful or not is determined by the end position detection of the infeed and the f inal pressure in the hydraulic system.
Process evaluation via the control software of the operating panel can be added as an option. A special monitoring-window function is used to set a successful insertion process as a reference.
As soon as an insertion process matches the specif ied reference values, it is evaluated as successful. The pressure sensor on the hydraulic cylinder measures the f inal pressure.
by query f inal position / f inal pressure
by indirect measuring method via displacement measuring system /
hydraulic oil pressure
Process evaluation via output of insertion process

Process evaluation via visualized window technology

AUTORIV A230-BI: Mobile robotic tools – advantages
Extremely short cycle time
Since fasteners are loaded simultaneously to the insertion process, the loading time is not part of the
cycle time.
Active tolerance compensation
The active, patented tolerance compensation is possible thanks to a floating insertion head that f its all
blind rivet fasteners.
Active tool protection
The force stroke is only triggered when the fastener has successfully reached the component.
Compact design
Both the insertion unit and the feeding system have compact dimensions and can therefore be installed
in a space-saving manner.
Good accessibility
The positioning of the AUTORIV A000 feeding unit outside of the robot cell provides the highest accessi-
bility for the operator and the service personnel.
System technology from one source
The complete system incorporates the experience and f ield-tested technology from over 45 years
development time. The innovative mechanics of the system ensure minimal susceptibility to faults.

Automated Fastener and Assembly Systems (A-FAS Group)
MDS is a shareholder of the A-FAS Group, which in-
cludes nine companies in Europe, Asia and North
America. Both legally and economically independent,
each of these companies has a very specialized orien-
tation. The combination of these synergetic speciali-
zations and a uniform strategy, which is determined
by the Board of Directors of the A-FAS, results in a
globally unique performance portfolio with major cus-
tomer benef its. Complete systems, consisting of auto-
mation and automation-specif ic fastening elements or
small parts are offered from one source: from develop-
ment and production to the delivery, from hand tools to
robotic systems, and all of this on a global scale.
