A Global Hub For Life Sciences
New Jersey is a life sciences powerhouse. It is home to the headquarters or
major facilities of 13 of the top 20 biopharmaceutical companies in the world.
Over a five-year period (2011-2016) New Jersey’s drug & pharmaceutical
component still grew by +10.5%. The State also has robust biotechnology
and medical device sectors, as well as world-class research institutions.
With nearly 3,300 facilities operating across all sectors, New Jersey’s life
sciences industry directly employs over 117,000 people, second only to
California. The estimated annual contribution to New Jersey’s economy is
$47.5 billion. In fact, the life sciences industry’s share of the State’s economy
is 89% higher than the national average. What’s more, ours is the only state
where a high degree of life science specialization spans 4 of 5 major industry
subsectors: drugs and pharmaceuticals; research, testing, and medical labs;
bioscience-related distribution; and, medical devices.

HIGHLY CONCENTRATED, HIGHLY SKILLEDNew Jersey has a highly educated workforce that makes it easy to recruit top
talent. We have the highest concentration of scientists and engineers in the
world: 225,000 at last count.
Many pharmaceutical and biotech companies choose New Jersey specifically
for this specialized R&D and commercialization talent.
Then, there are our top-flight teaching hospitals, medical schools and
universities. Collectively, they graduate 27,000 life science students each
year to join the State’s highly-educated talent pool.
A PERFECT LOCATIONSituated in the heart of the U.S. Northeast Corridor, New Jersey life sciences
companies have strategic access to local and global financial, media markets
and regulatory centers.
Northern New Jersey is just across the river from Wall Street, the heart of U.S.
finance. The regulatory centers of Washington D.C. are less than a 3-hour train
ride or 40-minute flight away.
Life science businesses that settle in the State also benefit from its high
concentration of biopharmaceutical companies, research centers and
universities, which increase the potential for partnering.
ECOSYSTEM FOR DISCOVERY & COMMERCIALIZATION New Jersey’s rich legacy of biopharmaceutical innovation dates back to 1886,
when Johnson & Johnson was founded as a family business in New Brunswick.
Innovation strength continues today as New Jersey companies pioneer the
future of medicine.
In 2017, 50% of new FDA drug approvals came from companies with a New
Jersey footprint. Twelve of the world’s top R&D companies are located here.
Our research universities, Princeton University, Montclair State University, New
Jersey Institute of Technology, Rowan University, Rutgers University, Seton Hall
University, Stevens Institute of Technology, have a long history of discovering
unique technologies for commercialization and collaboration with the private
sector to bring them to market. Their work is complemented by research
underway at New Jersey’s 13 teaching hospitals and 4 medical schools.
This concentration, combined with leading contract research organizations
(CROs) and a highly-diverse population make the State a prime location for
clinical trials. New Jersey’s drug pipeline includes breakthrough medicines for
the treatment of cancer, infectious disease and others. More than 470 CROs
have operations in New Jersey.
