DEAR FRIENDS // 2019 was the culmination of years of preparation for Phase I of our long-range plan. Who could have imagined that we would begin our construction project in the midst of a historic pandemic? Working to keep our Health Care residents safe throughout this time has resulted in some delays for the Health Care portion of the project and in prolonging the construction schedule, but progress is in sight.
After several years of planning and a year of rezoning, 2019 was the year of financing. On December 5, 2019, Sharon Towers closed on its $94 million tax-exempt bond debt, providing the funds needed to renovate and expand our Health Care Center and amenity spaces as well as construct The Deerwood, a new 42-unit independent living apartment building.
While there have been unforeseen challenges brought on by COVID-19, we are confident in the resiliency of this organization and in its ability to navigate these challenging times. We look forward to the day when we are past the pandemic and we can all gather together to celebrate the completion of Phase I of our project and of the hard work that so many did to make it happen.
We wish you a safe and healthy year ahead.
Douglas K. Bradley Anne O. MoffatChair, Board of Directors President & CEO

Residents’Assistance Fund
Since our doors opened in 1969, our mission to be a senior living community that provides a loving and caring atmosphere and meets the needs of those who live here has guided Sharon Towers. One part of this mission is to provide financial assistance to residents and prospective residents through our Residents’ Assistance Program.
Donations to the Residents’ Assistance Fund allow Sharon Towers to provide financial assistance to residents and prospective residents in the way of reduced monthly service fees or waived entrance fees. These recipients, who remain anonymous, are our friends and neighbors who have proudly paid their way their entire lives but now find themselves unable to afford the increased costs of care during retirement.
Since opening our doors, $6,605,163 in entrance fees and $13,063,713 in monthly service fee assistance has been provided. Gifts made to the Residents’ Assistance Fund make a difference in the lives and in the sense of security for each recipient. In 2019, thanks to the generosity of our loyal donors, Sharon Towers provided $219,600 in waived entry fees to individuals and $804,131 in monthly services fees. Beyond financial support, the Fund provides residents with peace of mind and a sense of security. Through the generosity of our residents, families, friends, churches, and other organizations, this is possible – thank you!

This listing reflects gifts made to Sharon Towers between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019. While every effort for accuracy was made, if you think an error or omission has been made, please let us know by calling 704-553-3817 or by emailing [email protected].

Planned giving is an opportunity for you to create a legacy with a deferred gift to Sharon Towers through a bequest, retirement plan, life insurance plan, charitable remainder trust, charitable lead trust, or other planned giving vehicle. You can ensure that Sharon Towers is able to support its mission and have much needed resources for the Residents’ Assistance Fund. Through a planned gift, our residents, your friends and neighbors, are safe and secure in their Sharon Towers home should they outlive their financial resources.
The Stroupe Legacy Circle was established in 2004 and is named for Conger and Dorothea Stroupe, donors of the largest planned gift – a $1.8 million bequest – in Sharon Towers’ history. A former administrator and resident, Conger died on May 9, 1995 and left his residuary estate to Sharon Towers for the purpose of establishing an endowment to be used to assist residents no longer able to pay the full cost of their care.
Sharon Towers has the deepest gratitude to the Stroupes and to the many others who have remembered our mission of charitable care and provided support through a planned gift. Please contact Jennifer Morgan, Director of Development and Campaign, at (704) 553-3817 or [email protected] if you would like information on planned giving or to let her know that you have included Sharon Towers in your estate plans. We would love to welcome you as a member of the Stroupe Legacy Circle.

The Sharon Towers Mission is to “enrich the lives of those we serve by providing a nurturing environment that fosters joy, purpose, and well-being.” This charge is embraced not only within the Sharon Towers campus, but extends out into our surrounding community. Residents, families, team members, friends, and members of the community come together every year to make a difference and have a positive impact on the lives of others in the Charlotte community. Please enjoy reading about some of the highlights of our 2019 community outreach efforts.
This is a small sample of how Sharon Towers and our residents impacted the Charlotte community positively in 2019. If you would like to learn more about any of these projects, or would like to learn how you might be able to help, please contact Carmen Murphy, Community Outreach Coor-dinator, at [email protected] or 704-553-1877.
