GET ready to be entertained byScotsman Gav the Tinker as hetakes you on a journey of musicthrough the ages.

With a career in the industryspanning over 10 years, Gav theTinker, AKA Gavin Baird, is sureto entertain you tonight atAnnie’s Place with his impressivevocals and guitar skills.

With a style he described as amix of folk, infused with BobDylan and The Police, Gav saidhe tended to play music by olderartists.

‘‘I do a lot of covers here, likeJohnny Cash — I love countrymusic,’’ Gav said.

‘‘I play a bit of a mixture,mainly older stuff, up to about1978.

‘‘I think song writing, as far asme coming up with new ways ofputting words with beats comes

from everything.‘‘The sky, I love the sky.‘‘People’s lives and trains.‘‘I don’t know, it’s just the

travelling, people get on a trainand just go, so I guess travellingtoo.

‘‘My love of music started whenI bought a guitar and startedplaying in my bedroom — just meand my radiator playing songstogether.

‘‘I went to an open mic nightand I was so nervous I couldn’tbreathe. This one girl said it wasa really nice song and from thenI knew I wanted to write and singmusic for the rest of my life.’’

The self proclaimed ramblerhas been in Alice Springs forabout six weeks, and said prior tocoming to the Red Centre he hadbeen travelling the country withhis girlfriend, Laine Harkins.

‘‘I’m here with my beautifulgirlfriend whom I followed toAustralia,’’ he said.

‘‘I was living in Glasgow andshe just asked — I came with bellson.

‘‘Alice is great! There seems tobe loads of talented musicians.’’

Gav said his stage name, Gavthe Tinker, originated from thefirst band he played in.

‘‘It was a little psychedelic ‘60sband. I thought my name was soboring so I called myself Isaac theTinker Thomas.

‘‘Tinker is like an old Irish wordfor someone who is a bit raggedlike a hobo who wonders aroundwearing waistcoats. I was like thisand it kind of just stuck.’’

So come to Annie’s Place to-night from 7pm for great liveentertainment by Gav theTinker.

He is sure to have you singingalong to his music one minute,and in stitches from his wittybanter the next.

SIZZLE to salsa as local bandMacumbale perform their final showfor the year next Friday.

Be whisked away by theirColombian Afro-cuban infusedsounds, as they transport you fromAustralia’s Red Centre to a Salsa clubin Latin America.

The event will be held at theGapview Hotel, and is the perfect wayto celebrate the venue’s recently reno-vated facilities.

The eight-piece band will be playingoriginal songs composed by the foun-der of Macumbale and piano player,Columbian-born Carlos Naranjo.

Joining the group will be CarlosMora, a former member of Sydney-based band Son Veneno, who has alsocollaborated with Naranjo.

Erica Riley is the band’s manager,and said they were looking forward tothe event.

‘‘This will be the first gig since we’vebeen actively putting songs online tolisten to,’’ Ms Riley said.

‘‘It’ll be interesting to see how theaudience responds, as they’ll know thewords.

‘‘Naranjo and Mora are going to re-unite for this show which will be prettycool.

‘‘It’s our last gig for the year. It’s apretty big deal for us.’’

The event marks a successful yearfor Macumbale, who performed vari-

ous shows around town including atthe Alice Desert Festival.

Ms Riley said everyone was welcome,and the performance would be a littledifferent to what the Alice Springscommunity were used to.

‘‘If you don’t like heavy rock musicit’s calm but fun,’’ she said.

‘‘In our community it is really rare,and that should be explored by peoplehere.

‘‘We have hot weather at the mo-ment so you might as well get hot andsweaty dancing salsa.’’

Macumbale were formed afterNaranjo moved to Alice Springs fromSydney, where he played with Carlito’sOrchestra, as well as many other well-established jazz and great latin music-ians.

Doors open at the Gapview Hotelfrom 8pm on December 13, entry is $15.
