Whether you are trying to make changes to your health, finances, or career keep it realistic. We all would like to bring on

change and be a better person. The key to setting your goals is to set short term realistic goals. Setting goals can be easy, but achieving them is the difficult step. Goal setting is relatively easy. Goal achievement, however, is another matter and we often struggle to achieve our goals. We are taught that we should set goals according to certain principles. Goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-framed. It's easy to understand why people become frustrated when they are unable to manifest their goals within the time that they originally set for their goal. At any moment in your life, you're either successfully moving towards your goals or you're moving away from your goals. So this New Year make things happen and set realistic goals.

On Thursday, Dec. 11th, Eric Kilner was one of four 2008 Apprentice Graduates to receive the Virginia Outstanding Apprentice

Award presented by the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Labor and Industry. Eric beat out over 3000 plus graduates across the State of Virginia for the honor. Being selected as (1) of (4) from that number of apprentices is an outstanding accomplishment. The award ceremony was held at the Confederate Hills Recreation Building near Richmond. Eric has had a lot of experience in the outside machinist trade and also in the U.S. Navy in the Nuclear Propulsion area. As an Apprentice, Eric recorded the highest shop grade possible for 22 straight months. He also held a 4.0 GPA while completing his requirements for the A.A.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. He also participated in the Apprentice School’s Student Association (ASSA) where he served as a delegate on the Publications Committee, Publications Committee Chair, ASSA Ethics Committee, and President of the ASSA. He was also chapter chair of the Student Chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers for two consecutive years and a member of the JAYCEES Student Chapter. He was also selected for a special rotation through the Research and Development section of the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center where he completed a study on Alternate Energies for Military Applications. He was also recognized by the Commanding Officer on the USS Enterprise for his work on the Automatic Propulsion Control System. Eric is currently a Marine Designer in E64 working for Hal Thompson on CVN 65. Eric says that “It was both an honor and a privilege to be selected as the Virginia State Apprentice of the Year for 2008. Considering the talent and quality of apprentices in the shipyard, it was a humbling experience to be chosen to represent my fellow shipyard apprentices. I want to thank the Faculty and Staff of The Apprentice School for allowing me the opportunity and giving me the support to achieve such a distinct honor.”

Have you ever wondered, “Why do we pay Apprentice dues”? Our Apprentice dues go towards extracurricular activities and merchandise. The Apprentice dues help builds the budget that we have yearly. Last year the Apprentice School budget was

fifty-five thousand dollars. Out of that budget we do charity events such as the polar plunge, relay for life, and the Sarah Bonwell Christmas party. Apprentice dues also go towards planned trips that we have yearly. Examples of some of these trips include professional baseball and basketball games. The budget is also spent towards merchandise for you! The big screen TV, Xbox 360’s, and Nintendo Wii’s, just to name a few merchandise that was given away at the Christmas dance. I’m guessing you’re thinking, “Who decides on what activities does the money go towards?” “The Council represents the entire student body and that is why it is important for us to have the proper number of delegates”, said Vice President Takiyah Bailey. The delegates represent you as an Apprentice. That is why it’s very important to be involved in the activities here at the Apprentice School. If you’re putting money into it, you might as well have some say in how it's spent!!

New Year: 2009!Motivation for the

Paul Norton X18

The year 2009 is upon us, a clean slate to start fresh. We have new opportunities to excel. As apprentices, we have many tasks that divide our attention. All of them important.

Family, work and school consume our time and energy and at times drain us. Some times, at least for me, it is hard to stay focused and motivated. One way we can stay focused is to find a mentor, someone to look to for advice, direction and at times motivation. One such person is Mr. Charlie Brown, instructor for the Apprentice School. Mr. Brown throughout his classes and through interaction with apprentice students is constantly motivating people. He treats the Apprentice School as a very important stepping stone in our careers and even in our lives. Here are some down to earth catch phrases Mr. Brown has used to help motivate students.

Mr. Brown’s wisdom and insight on careers and life in general is valuable, especially to apprentices. I would ask apprentices for the New Year to find a mentor, a motivator to assist them in the Apprentice School journey. Many thanks to Mr. Brown and all the other people like him who gives of themselves to help apprentices.

Everyday activities can bring on stress to your body and mind. The key to handling your stress is management of your activities. Stress can become intense and wreaks havoc on an individual

emotional and physical balance. The causes of stress are numerous and in workplaces it can result from fear of meeting targets, strain, sleeplessness, fatigue, job dislocation, family problems, fear, overwork and poor diet. Stress can have serious implications on a workers life, output, and creativity. Stress management involves prevention, control and taking remedial measures in places of occurrence and can either be treated with medication or counseling. Some other ways to control your stress is effective communication, relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, meditation, problem solving, modifying ones behavior, getting rid of anger, thinking positively and learning to say no. Learning how to manage your stress can increase your health in your mind and body.

Every year the Apprentice School Student Association honors delegates who have gone above and beyond. For 2008 the Awards Banquet was held at Smithfield Station in Smithfield

on January 24, 2009. The Executive Council for 2008 was recognized for their service with handsome personalized plaques. The officers and chairpersons of the 2008 ASSA Executive council were- For President: Eric Kilner, Greg Bone and Robert McNeely, Vice President: Takiyah Bailey, Secretary: Patrick Nicholson, Treasurer: Kim Jordan, Communications Chair: Linda Jones, Public Relations Chair: Stiles Bliss, Activities Chair: Derek Briggs and Billy Callis, Athletics Chair: Houston Jacobs, Publications Chair: Charles Williamson and Dar Deerfield, Yearbook Chair: Iyawnna Still and Brittney Sheppard, Bylaws/Class Chair: Jeremy Morrison and Vernon Hall. The top ten point earners were also recognized and received an Apprentice School logo watch and a handsome plaque. Christmas Dinner DanceFrances Maston, X15

Are you up for it? What is it? Since 1993, Virginia’s Special Olympics has had a party on the beach in the cozy month of February. Apprentice School students, faculty and other

teams made from surrounding areas become sponsored team members of one very chilly event. They each promise the sponsors that they will plunge into the icy waters at Virginia Beach to raise money for the Special Olympics. Onlookers, radio stations, and party goers have great fun encouraging the pop cycled participants. Awards are given for the individual with most money raised, team with most money raised and team with most plungers. The next plunge is February 7, 2009. Go to www.firstgiving.com/apprenticeschool to donate and get more information.

On December 13, the students, faculty and staff of The Apprentice School gathered together to celebrate another year together at the Christmas Dinner Dance. Accompanied by their

spouses, significant others, or friends, all dressed in their finest, they came together at the Marriot in City Center for an evening filled with food, dancing, and prizes. Yes, prizes! Lucky raffle winners received various gifts such as chocolates, gifts cards, iPods, Playstation 3, and the final drawing sent someone home with a 50’’ plasma screen TV. A great time was had by all who came there for one!

The Jaycees is an international organization that develops leadership through community service The Apprentice School Jaycees was the first collegiate chapter, chartered in 2004.

Members are encouraged to organize community service events as well as volunteer for those organized by others. When a member decides to organize an event, their fellow Apprentices will offer their support and advice based on their past experiences. Not only is the organization a good way to improve leadership skills, it is also a great opportunity for networking with community leaders. New membership is $15. An interest meeting will be held March 17th in the Apprentice School Auditorium at 4pm. Contact Membership VP Emily Spitzer at [email protected] for more information.

Small, white, energetic…and mechanical. At approximately 10pm on December 13, shortly after Jake Verbeck was called up to draw more winners for the raffle, the Apprentice School

Christmas Dinner Dance was temporarily overrun by hamsters. They rolled about mindlessly in their little balls, accompanied by “The Hampster Dance”. The cute little rodents were soon contained, and quickly became one of the most sought after souvenirs of the night. So you may ask: what was the reason? There is none: hamsters don’t need a reason.
