Background History
• He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark.
• Was born on June 19, 1922 as fourth son.
• Son of Niels Bohr and Margrethe Bohr.
• Family fled to Sweden avoiding arrest by Nazis.
Education• Attended school at Sortedam
Gymnasium for twelve years.• Started attending University
of Copenhagen in 1940.• Went with father to England;
atomic energy project.• Went back to University and
obtained masters degree.
Family
• Married Marietta Soffer in March 1950.• Was married in New York City.• Had three children; Vilhelm, Tomas, and
Margrethe.• Travels with family to many different
countries.
Contributions
• Developed the collective model of nuclear matter.
• Had help from James Rainwater and Ben R. Mottelson.
• Based on liquid-drop model created by Niels Bohr.
• Also based on the shell model.
Theory
• Neutrons and protons are held together by forces.
• Forces are similar to water droplets sticking together.
• All the forces sums create a “force field”.
• Combination of models was called collective model.
Awards
• In 1975, the Nobel Prize in physics.
• All three scientists were awarded Nobel Prize.
• For connection between collective motion and particle motion.
• Also for the structure of the atomic nucleus.

• The Dannie Heineman Prize in 1960.
• The Pope Pius XI Medal in 1963.
• The Atoms for Peace Award in 1969.
