World’s Strongest Man: Atlas Stones1. Throughout the challenge each man loses energy. Where
is this energy stored?2. Does one man lose more energy than the other during the
competition? Why?3. How is the winner (the strongest and most powerful man)
determined?

Introducing “Power”
“Power” Concept
Strength or POWER is measured by…
A. The energy transferred or “used”.
B. The time it takes to complete the task.
Units:J/s = Watts
…also measured in units of horsepower (746W = 1hp)
Strongest Student Competition
● Find the total work done / energy exerted and the amount of time to do it.
h
m
h = 0m
● A “free day” from conventional learning and electricity. Nothing can be powered using energy provided by the school.
● Lab groups come up with a proposal and present...● Activities (Power requirements & total
energy needed)● How to generate needed energy from
bike (stored prior to the activity).
● Each class will vote and chose one proposed activity. ● If the needed energy is produced / stored we will do
the activity on Off-the-Grid Day.
Final Proposal Presentation
● Make a Google Presentation (share with your group and ME).
Name: "Bell# Off-the-Grid Proposal (Name1, Name2, etc...)"
1. Description of the proposed activity for our future Off-the-Grid day.
2. Diagram, picture or illustration advertising your proposed activity.
3. Needed Energy Calculations for all of your electronic devices.
4. Plan to store the needed energy using the bicycle generator. How much time to pedal?
Needed Energy Calculations
60,000J for the Wii +210,000J for the TV Cart
= 270,000J for the activity
Plan for Storing the Energy
To partake in this activity we calculated that we will need to pedal a mere hour and a half. We have a pedaling incentive of whomever pedals will go before those who did not pedal. From the survey, 24 people responded that they would contribute to pedaling the bike. 90min/24 people = 3.75min per person (time varies depending on your personal power.
