I. Welcome and Introduction by the Chair

II. MLA in New York (May 1-4)

ii. MLA Liaison meeting with ABA, Thursday May 3 at 2 pm at Holland &
Knight offices - Jim Bartlett reports he will have other ABA leadership in
attendance to address joint efforts. Will be 20 minutes.
iii. YLC meeting, Thursday May 3 at 2 pm at Holland & Knight offices; PamPalmer, Sean O'Neill and Chris Nolan will present on different types ofbusiness development; YLC social event Thursday night - Contact Pamela

iv. MLA general meeting, Friday morning May 4, ABCNY - 9-12 pm
v. Inaugural AMLC committee lunch at NY Yacht Club, 12 pm, May 4; right

III.Law student writing competition
a. 16 entries from law schools around the country; Laurie Sands is coordinating theselection process; Goal is to announce the winner by ABA TIPS Spring Leadership

b. Charleston School of Law committee interaction event, Friday afternoon May 18:will begin at 3 PM. Committee members attending event - Nolan, Sands, Martyn.
Discussion of careers and q/a.
c. Olivia Palmer Friday evening gala: over 80 people will be in attendance involving
a cross section of Charleston maritime firms, organizations, etc.
d. AMLC business meeting, Saturday afternoon 1 pm May 19, Charleston Place; allinvited to attend
e. Carolinas Yacht Club dinner/Charleston School of Law, Saturday night; by invita-
tion only. Hosted by Professor Bridwell.

V. Special Edition Newsletter - cruise ship industry focus was a success. Will seek to distrib-ute at the MLA cruise ship committee meeting in New York.
a. Next newsletter: we have five articles scheduled already, ranging from armed
guards on ships to bill of lading issues.
VI.Practitioner of the Year idea - Ray Waid addressed how New Orleans bar association han-dles process. For ABA, focus would be on plaintiff, defense, and insurance angle. Pre-
liminary stages only and will need to study nomination and selection process.
VII. Maritime industry outreach - Wayne Parker, assistant general counsel for Horizon
Lines addressed key issues facing the industry as he sees it. Four points to focus on for
U.S. companies in particular - bankruptcy, Jones Act, labor disputes, and the environ-ment. Considerations for CLE later this year.
a. Vice Chair Dawn Serafine - new position at Skanska US.
VIII. Rotterdam Rules update - No new progress from the U.S. aspect; Denmark and Nor-
way have made progress. Norwegian report has summary translated to English. Sup-
port for ratification.IX.AMLC Linked in subgroup page - continue to post discussions, articles, and polls
X. Membership/law student outreach - continuing efforts but nothing new to report.
XI.Recreational boating update - Mike Daly and Art Severance are on time; reviewing MLA
summary sheets to make sure all areas are covered.
XII. Graduation well wishes - Stetson University College of Law sent note regarding futureVice Chair Chris Hamilton. Graduating in a few weeks.
