ACADEMIC SESSION: 2018 - 19
Class X (CBSE)
Holiday Research Work (Integrated Assignments)
STUDENT’S NAME: -- DATE:--
Summer is the anthem of the childhood. It is when you generally throw your school bags away,
take a break from your rigorous academic work. It is a time to relax, visit your relatives and
friends, watch movies, play both indoors and outdoors, eat a lot, etc. It is a time to do something
new, something different. While doing this and more, we also want you to spend at least an hour
doing some serious academic work, honing your research skills.
Attached with these guidelines is Holiday Homework to be completed during the summer break.
Please read the task carefully and carry out the research project as best as you can. You are expected to bring this back
with you on the first day of the school after the summer break.
Six things to Remember during Summer Vacation:
While your parents and we want you to have fun during summer break, we also want to you be thinkers and doers. The
following guidelines will help you to be both, while enjoying your freedom at the same time.
1. Learning doesn’t stop when school is out: Instead of spending time playing video games or on facebook or watching
TV, find other ways of entertaining yourself – learn a musical instrument like guitar or keyboard, learn a hobby like
origami or magic tricks, read novels, learn cooking, etc.
2. For every hour of electronics, you give one hour of play time: We are aware that it is very hot during summer break
but you still need to get out and play either early in the mornings or late in the evenings. Keep yourself fit and
healthy.
3. If you are bored, help out at home: You will get easily bored during the summer. Try helping your parents in house
chores. For example, Try cleaning your room and reordering it completely.
4. Reading is a must: Reading nurtures your soul. Keep aside at least an hour to read good novels. Your English
teachers will suggest good books to read. When you visit malls, make sure you drop in at a bookstore.
5. There is no sleeping all day and staying up all night: While it is understandable that you need unstructured time
during the summer, make sure you do not stay up all night and sleep during the day. It is unhealthy and it will be
hard for you to readjust to regular school schedule at the end of the vacations.
6. Make sure you make time for your parents: Watch a movie, go out on dinners with your family and spend more time
with your family than with your friends.

READING COMPREHENSION (HOLIDAY HOMEWORK)
Student’s Name: Date : - 05 -2018
I Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
“Teenagers? Stress? You must be joking.” This is probably the reaction when asked whether teenagers get
fretful and apprehensive. For, it is generally believed that they have ‘no responsibilities, no worries and no
duties.’ But that is not true.
In today’s competitive world, one needs to struggle and fight to make it in this dynamic, yet uncertain
environment that is both stressful and anxiety inducing. Teenagers face myriad of pressures, three of which
are briefly discussed here. The pressure to perform ie., to do well academically comes principally from
parents, teachers and peers.
The lack of aptitude tests or respecting the students’ preferences push them into fields which may not interest
them or for which they are not equipped. Apart from the pressure to perform well, they are often burdened
with the pressure to conform to the norms laid down by society. Next, teenagers are pressurized to reform
themselves. This is commonly experienced especially by students in the age group of 13 to 17. Everybody is
telling them when to wake up and what to do. Here’s what you can do to deal with these pressures. As a
result of pressure, teenagers are often found to be very anxious. A sign of anxiety is holding one’s breath.
The easy way out to take deep breaths at regular intervals, trying to calm your mind.
Modern life’s competitiveness and challenges put a tremendous load of work on teenagers. They need to
understand that they are strong enough to handle the tough challenges in life, studying and assignments being
two of them. Procrastinators ie., people who habitually delay and postpone doing their work, need to cultivate
‘the art of starting’ and this involves dealing with the minor discomfort experienced while beginning a task.
Once a job has started, it is much easier to continue.
Some students worry about factors like social and financial status, intelligence and habits that might make
them different from their peers. Effective stress management lies in having a healthy attitude towards
competition, work, friends and acquaintances. It lies in taking life as it comes, doing your best and being
prepared for the worst.
1.What do you mean by effective stress management?
2.Who are procrastinators? How can procrastination be overcome?
3.Give an example of how a teenager can deal with pressures.
4.What kind of pressures are faced by teenagers?
5.The word in the second paragraph which means the same as ‘troubled state of mind’ is______________.
6.The word in the third paragraph which is a synonym of ‘likings’ is_____________________.
7.The word in the fourth paragraph which is an antonym of ‘comfort’ is__________________.
8.The word in the last paragraph which is a synonym of ‘position’ is____________________.
II Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
I chanced upon a blog post that discussed some of Mahatma Gandhi’s sayings. All of them built on a
powerful opening statement by Gandhi to take responsibility and to shake off a lethargic approach to life:
-
DRSIS/ INTEGRATED HOLIDAY HOMEWORK/2018-19/Page 6 of 31
“The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the
world’s problems.” Let’s look at a few of them in more detail.
“You must be the change you want to see in the world.” When we change how we think, we change the way
we see our world. Breaking free of old, limiting thought patterns help, us change the way we feel and act. We
feel empowered to take action in ways we would never have thought possible. A fresh perspective helps us
find new solutions to old problems.
“Nobody can hurt me without my permission.” It is a known fact that we often react aggressively to injustice.
Forgiveness calls for great inner strength. It’s simple really-if we don’t forgive, we are allowing someone to
control is in some way or the other. Negative thoughts encourage anger and restlessness all the time. The
moment we decide to forgive, we liberate ourselves from all that negativity.
“I do not want to foresee the future, I am concerned with taking care of the present.”Isn’t it futile worrying
about a future we have no control over? Losing sleep about what is to come only makes us dwell on past
failures or imagine hopeless future outcomes. It is important to stay in the present moment. I think this will
keep us focused and make s perform better.
“Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do are in harmony.” Self-belief supports
authentic communication and sends out a powerful message. When we remain true to ourselves, we feel
powerful and good. Word and deed go hand in hand, so people really listen to us. They respect us for who we
are. Our relationships become more positive and meaningful. We feel stronger and happier and all’s right
with our world!
1.Why does the writer feel Gandhi’s first statement is a powerful one?
2.Why is it important to stop old limiting thought patterns? Discuss two advantages.
3.How is granting forgiveness liberating for a person?
4.Worrying about the future is futile and harmful. Explain why.
Choose the most appropriate answer:
5.Which word in the passage has the same meaning as ‘interested/fascinated’?
(a) suffice (b) appealed (c) empowered (d) authentic
6.Which word has the same meaning as ‘liberate’?
(a) restrain (b) limit (c) release (d) prevent
7.Which word in the passage has the same meaning as ‘useless/pointless’?
(a) lethargic (b) negative (c) restless (d) futile
8.Which word in the passage means the opposite of ‘chaos’?
(a) purpose (b) injustice (c) harmony (d) forgiveness
