This document presents the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) CentralCertification Program (ACCP). Within the ACCP there are several certification options intended tosatisfy employer, employee, and industry needs.
The ACCP has been developed to improve NDT reliability and accuracy through enhancedperformance of personnel. The ACCP will provide customers and prospective employers with clearexpectations of NDT personnel competency and proficiency. Those individuals performing NDTwill obtain a transportable certification recognizing their occupational capabilities.
Revision 3 (November 1997) 5
Foreword
1.0 ScopeThis document establishes the system for central certification of nondestructive testing (NDT)personnel administered and maintained by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing(ASNT). The purpose of the ASNT Central Certification Program (ACCP) is to provideindependent, transportable NDT certification by examination to promote national andinternational acceptance of NDT certification and reduce multiple audits of certificationprograms.
2.0 Definitions2.1 ACCP certification: The process whereby ASNT certifies that an individual has met the
requirements of this document for ACCP Professional Level III, ACCP Level II, orACCP Level I.
2.2 ASNT NDT Level III: An individual who, having passed ASNT administered Basic andMethod(s) Examinations, holds a current, valid ASNT NDT Level III certificate in atleast one method.
2.3 Authorized examination center (AEC): A site with facilities and personnel, independentof the employer, approved by the ASNT Certification Management Council (CMC) toadminister NDT qualification examinations.
2.4 Authorized qualifying body (AQB): A competent organization, independent of theemployer, approved by the ASNT CMC to prepare and administer NDT qualificationexaminations.
2.5 Certificate: Written testimony of qualification.2.6 Certification Management Council (CMC): Formerly known as the Certification
Management Board (CMB), this is a council within ASNT that is responsible formanaging the ACCP.
2.7 Employer: The corporate, private, or public entity that employs personnel for wages orsalary.
2.8 Employer authorization: The process whereby an employer’s ACCP ProfessionalLevel III or ASNT NDT Level III reviews the certificates of ASNT central certificationfor the employer’s NDT personnel, determines if further examination (see job specificexaminations in 7.5) is required, and then, on behalf of the employer, authorizespersonnel to perform NDT for that employer.
2.9 Endorsement: Written testimony of a particular qualification.2.10 Guidance: Same as 2.19, Supervision.2.11 Industrial sector (IS): An industry, product-form or area of technology that possesses
common characteristics with respect to NDT considerations.2.12 Instruction: A description of the steps to be followed when performing an NDT
technique; developed in conformance with a procedure.2.13 Procedure: A written description that establishes minimum requirements for performing
an NDT method on any object, written in accordance with established standards, codes,or specifications.
2.14 Qualification: Demonstration or possession of education, skills, training, knowledge, andexperience required for personnel to properly perform NDT to a level as specified in thisdocument.
2.15 Recertification examination: An examination administered by the CMC expressly for thepurpose of recertification.
Revision 3 (November 1997) 7
ASNT Central Certi fication Program (ACCP)
2.16 Recertification: The process of extending one’s certification after the initial period ofvalidity, and maintaining certification for individual periods thereafter.
2.17 Renewal: Same as 2.16, Recertification.2.18 Specific procedure: Same as 2.12, Instruction.2.19 Supervision: The act of an ACCP Level II, ACCP Professional Level III, or ASNT NDT
Level III directing the application of NDT performed by other NDT personnel, whichincludes the control of actions involved in the preparation of the test, performance of thetest, and reporting of test results.

The remainder of the claimed experience(no more than 50%) shall be spent in NDT-related activities. If only one NDT method is applied for, thendirect performance of that NDT method shall have been 50% of the required time and the remainder shallhave been NDT-related.
3. NDT-related activities are:a. preparing for NDT;b. consulting on NDT;c. developing NDT reports;d. reviewing NDT reports or data;e. writing NDT procedures, instructions, specifications, or standards;f. supervising NDT activities;g. post-NDT cleanup;h. communicating NDT instructions;i. surveying or monitoring NDT activities;j. training NDT subjects; and/ork. maintaining NDT records.

NOTES1. Experience shall be based on the actual hours worked in the specific method.2. A person may be qualified directly to Level II with no time as a certified Level I, providing the required training
and experience consists of the sum of the hours required for Level I and Level II.3. The required minimum experience shall be documented by method and by hour with supervisor or Level III
approval.4. While fulfilling total NDT experience requirement, experience may be gained in more that one (1) method.
Minimum experience hours must be met for each method.

4. For Level II certification, the intent is that work experience consists of NDT work time as a Level I. If theindividual is being qualified directly to Level II, with no time at Level I, the experience shall consist of the sum ofthe times required for Level I and Level II.
5. Credit for work experience may be gained simultaneously in two or more NDT methods, with the reduction of totalrequired experience as follows:a. two testing methods - reduction of total required time by 25%;b. three testing methods - reduction of total required time by 33%; orc. four or more testing methods - reduction of total required time by 50%.In all cases where a reduction in work experience time is sought, the candidate shall be required to show at leasthalf of the time required, for each of the testing methods in which certification is sought.
