Project – progress
Vision: Changing lives through sport and physical activity on Sheppey.
Aim: to increase the levels of physical activity of the residents on Sheppey to improve their health & wellbeing.
Objectives:1. Identify the barriers to residents being active.
2. Promote existing activities & identify gaps in suitable activities.
3. Work with providers and help develop a local workforce.
4. Help bridge the gap between activity providers and organisations, (such as health, adult services, education), who work with those who aren’t active enough.
Project – vision and objectives
Project outcomes – so far….
Positives:✓ Regular updates to, and feedback from, the SCD Forum✓ SBC support – Officers & Cllrs – sport/health & wellbeing✓ Local Everyday Active Champion with a health & leisure

paracise (details below)✓ Low cost / no cost activity leaflet✓ Sea project – activity, safety, environment✓ Personal stories – short films
Project outcomes – so far….
Challenges:
✓ The scale of the problem✓ Ability to meet the ‘right’ people / decision makers✓ Training of providers re: the barriers to being active✓ Increasing access to the leisure centre✓ Improving knowledge of partners re: the broader
benefits of activity✓ Turning agreement into action✓ Everyday Active campaign/resources delayed✓Monitoring & Evaluation – measuring impact
Comparisons with LDP learning
• Sheppey Community Development Forum involves lots of community
organisations doing lots of great work but individually = disconnected
• SCDF is organised by the school, no obvious alternative leaders
• SCDF involves lots of well-meaning people/groups – passionate but also
negative about the island, happy to share their ideas at the meetings.
• A manifesto (vision& 10 principles) for the Island has been agreed, but only
a few are acting on those principles.
• Our link - increasing physical activity contributes to the manifesto ie.
improves the health & well-being of individuals
• Taking an ABCD approach – engaging and supporting the community to take
responsibility and ensure sustainability – slow process
• Local Everyday Active Champion – well known and trusted
• Actions delivered – e.g. parkrun has helped gain trust from the community
Move from disconnected but successful groups
To a shared purpose and collaborative relationships
To collective action which is co-designed
Helping to get more
people active
