Welcome and Thank You On behalf of the Zilinski Family, the Board of Directors, and the Toast Committee, we are proud to welcome you tonight to this event, our 13th Annual A Toast to Dennis- A Night of Remembrance.
Last year we had to pivot our way of fundraising as our world was hijacked by a virus. It was definitely a challenge, but just like our soldiers do, we rose to the occasion. We are committed to our mission and will not stop helping and supporting our Armed Forces servicemen and women and their families, as long as we are able to do so. Without the generous contributions of our donors, we would not be able to fulfill our mission. This year’s event, we are proud to honor WWII Veteran Charles “Crabby” Sona. You can read about Crabby in this journal.
Since its inception in 2006, this dedicated group of volunteers has raised over $1.5 million! This past year alone, even with our covid roadblocks, we were able to raise over $90,000, and awarded an excess of $150,000 in support of medical expenses for our wounded warriors; care packages to deployed servicemen and women, and of course our providing service dogs to our veterans suffering from PTSD, TBI, and other life altering injuries. To date we have provided sponsorships of over 100 service dogs!
Some of the recipients of our assistance are in attendance this evening, please take time not only to thank them for their service, but to get to know these extraordinary men and women. In addition, we are proud to have many veterans and active-duty service members joining us, please also take the time to thank them for their service.
Once again, we cannot say thank you enough to all our donors for their continued support of our fund and this event. To all those who have taken sponsorships and /or Ads in this journal; or donated items to the silent auction, we thank you. A special thank you to all who took time out of their busy lives to be in attendance tonight. Especially a big thank you to our band, the Docs of Rock for donating their talent for tonight’s entertainment, and Especially for you Florist for donating the beautiful floral centerpieces.
Most especially we thank 1Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, II and his fellow fallen comrades from all branches of service for their ultimate sacrifice. May God Bless all our troops and their families and may God Bless this Great United States of America!
FREEDOM IS NOT FREE! Maj. Matthew Zilinski, US ARMY NG, Co-chair Perri Donovan-Howlett, Administrative Assistant, Co-Chair
Let it be known that those who wear the Purple Heart
have given their blood in the defense of their homeland and
shall forever be revered by their countrymen.
A Toast to Our Fallen Comrades Ladies and Gentlemen, we’d like to bring your attention to
the small table, set for one, in a place of honor. This table is the military’s way of acknowledging
that members of this Proud profession are missing from our midst.
They are POWS, MIAS and those like 1LT. Dennis W. Zilinski, II – United States Army,
Who were killed in action. We call them brothers. They are unable to be with us this evening,
So we remember them because of their sacrifice.
The tablecloth is white, symbolizing the purity of their intentions
To respond to their country’s call to arms. The single rose in the vase reminds us of
the families and loved ones Of our Comrades-in-Arms,
Who keep faith, awaiting their return. The red ribbon tied so prominently on the vase,
Is reminiscent of the red ribbon worn upon the lapel and breast of thousands
Who bear witness to their underlying determination To demand a proper accounting of our missing.
A slice of lemon on the bread plate, To remind us of their bitter fate.
The salt is symbolic of the tears, as they wait. The glass is inverted, he cannot toast with us this night.
The chair is empty, he is not here.
Remember them, all of you who served with them and called them Comrade,
Who defended upon their might and aid and relied upon them, For surely they have not forgotten you.
Tonight we toast 1LT. Dennis W. Zilinski,II
and all of the Fallen Comrades and Honor their memory.

* The Zilinski Memorial Fund literally saved my life. I was stuck in a wheelchair and extremely depressed due to the poor condition of my legs. Doctors told me I couldn't be active because I couldn't risk damaging my fragile feet. They also said they wouldn't amputate until I had gangrene. The Fund paid for my surgeries and allowed me to have my life back. I now not only stand but walk daily, run 5k's and am a captain on the US Women's Para Ice Hockey team! The surgeries allowed me to turn my life around and pay it forward.

rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and

With the help of the Lieutenant Dennis Zilinski foundation I am able to lead a much more rich and fulfilling life. Gone are the days filled with never ending pain and discomfort, I never again have to tell my kids no when they want to play because my leg has no strength. I am able to be much more involved with the veteran community in Buffalo, NY. As co-captain of my all -veteran sled hockey team, not only do I get to spend time with friends, but I get to compete and be a voice for veterans and persons with disabilities. I will never be able to thank the foundation enough. I can only live my life to the fullest every single day in memory of a fallen hero who without ever meeting me, changed my life forever.

Grief we have learned is really just love. It's all the love you want to give but cannot. In moments of heartbreaking thoughts, we
remember the only reason we have an empty space is because we were so blessed with
someone who loved us so beautifully, that it occupied a part of our soul.
We cherish the memories we shared with you, yet something always tells us you are watching and still here. Loving you changed our lives. It should come as no surprise that losing you has
done the same.
We love you and miss you everyday.

* This year has been a wonderful year, Dr. Chad is continually growing and learning to understand me and we're becoming a great team. Though it is not a pill or something that will heal me, he has become an extension to make things easier. With this newfound comfort we will be taking a new adventure this coming April 2019. We are doing a surprise Disney World trip for our kids. Knowing I have Doctor Chad by my side and my family for support, I know I can get through this during the busiest time of year.
Before him I wouldn't even think of doing this. It's like the real Doctor Chad is walking with me, for how can a dog know all he does. But yet nothing needs to be said and he knows I need him. I'm being taken care of by the two best Doctor Chad's I know!
Thank you to all that support this organization to help others like me.

* Throughout the past year the bond between my service dog Scout and Ihad continued to grow into much more then I ever thought was possible. Not only has she allowed me to be more emotionally available to my children, my family, and my friends but has also provided me the opportunity to physically be present at places and events I thought were no longer possible for me. Not only can we now go to places I couldn't before, we seek them out.
We go to talk with children and young adults at schools and tell our story to any group that wants to listen. We help our community with charity events and for the first time in a long time, we travel again. Scout and Imade a huge breakthrough this year by driving cross country just Scout, myself, my truck and an old 1979 pull behind camper. We stopped everywhere we wanted, made new friends, and created unforgettable memories.
The Zilinski Memorial Fund who sponsored Scout, Chad Laymen whose support and friendship helped me hold on and get into the program and K9s for Warriors who provided me my service dog made this possible. Scout and I want to thank every supporter and sponsor of the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund from the bottom of heart and a special thank you to Marion, whom has made this all possible.

For over 10 years, I suffered with insurmountable pain and limitations due to the severity of my leg injury. I was confined to a wheelchair due to my lack of mobility. I heard about the great things that The Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, II Memorial Fund do for Veterans. I applied for assistance, told them my story and learned that amputation might be able to help me live my life to the fullest. I was so excited, for the first time in over a decade. I felt that my struggles might soon come to an end. My surgery was approved. I met with the doctors, spoke with Marion and her team and made the decision to have the amputation. I am now able to walk unassisted. I am able to stand up. My limitations have lessened in my year and a half post amputation. I am thriving and will continue to thrive through the gift that was given to me.
Since amputation I have been ice skating standing up, I have ridden a recumbent bike, I have played at an apple orchard with my foster son, I have been able to walk my dogs, and I have been able to dance with my wife.
