1. SUMMARY 1.1 These notes and following tables and charts present trends and compare Bevington primary school
with all primary schools in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (LA Average) and the national average (where data is available). Bevington primary school is a community school, which is non-denominational and financially maintained by the local authority. It is located in the north of the borough (i.e. north of Holland Park Avenue). Analyses are made where appropriate by school type (sector) and location (area). Data for nursery schools/classes is included (unless otherwise stated).
1.2 Pupils and Teachers 1.2.1 Primary rolls (including nursery) in Bevington, increased between 2010 and 2011 from 298 to 319, an
increase of 7%. This increase compares to an overall increase at the borough level (2.0%), increase at the sector level (2.7%) and an increase at the area level (3.2%). The primary school occupancy rate (the number of statutory aged pupils expressed as a percentage of the school net capacity) was 92% in 2011. The rate was below the average for the borough (94%), above the average for the sector (91%) and above the average for the area (91%).
1.2.2 Borough of Residence: 74% of Bevington pupils in January 2011 were resident in the Royal Borough. This was the same as the average for the borough (74%), below the average of the sector (83%) and the same as the average of the area (74%).
1.2.3 Pupil Teacher Ratio (qualified teachers) increased from 19.5 in 2010 to 22.4 in 2011. This was above the borough, above the sector average and above the area average (19.5, 19.1 and 19.9 respectively), and above the national average (20.9).
1.2.4 The average class size increased from 24.0 in 2010 to 26.3 in 2011. This was below the average for the borough (26.7), above the average for the sector (25.5), above the average for the area (26.2) and below the national average (26.6). The average Key Stage 1 class (taught by one teacher) at Bevington in 2011 had 26.0 pupils and the average Key Stage 2 class (taught by one teacher) had 26.5 pupils.
1.2.5 Pupil Mobility: The proportion of pupils starting or leaving school outside normal times was 22% in 2010/2011. This was above the average for the borough (16%), above the average for the sector (17%) and above the average of the area (13%).
1.2.6 Teacher Mobility: In 2009/2010, 13% of all teachers left during or at the end of the academic year. This was below the average for the borough (17%), below the average for the sector (21%) and below the average for the area (19%).
1.2.7 Exclusions: There were no permanent exclusions and five fixed term exclusions at Bevington in 2010/2011.
1.3 Pupil Characteristics 1.3.1 Pupils with Special Educational Needs: There were four statemented pupils at Bevington in 2011
representing 1.3% of the roll. This compares to 2.4% of the LA roll, 2.3% of the sector roll, 2.1% of the area roll and 1.4% nationally. There were 56 pupils with special educational needs but no statement at Bevington in 2011 representing 18% of the roll. This compares to 13% of the LA roll, 15% of the sector roll, 14% of the area roll and 18% nationally.
1.3.2 In 2011, 45% of full time pupils were entitled to free school meals, down from 46% in 2010. This was
above the rate for the borough, above the sector, and below the area in 2011 (35%, 41% and 46% respectively), and above the national average (19%).
1.3.3 Language: In January 2011, 61% of pupils spoke English as an additional language, up from 60% in 2010. This compares to 57% in the borough, 59% in the sector, 56% in the area and 17% nationally in 2011. After English, Arabic, spoken by 26% of the roll in 2011, was the predominant first language of pupils. In 2011, 4% of the EAL pupils had achieved full fluency in English, down from 8% in 2010.
1.3.4 Ethnicity: In January 2011, 99% of pupils were classified by ethnicity by their parents. Of those classified, 22% were ‘Black African’, 13% were ‘Mixed Other’, 10% were ‘White British.’
1.3.5 Religion: In January 2011, 99% of pupils were classified by parents. Of those classified, 69% were ‘Muslim’ and 19% were ‘Christian’.
1.4. Performance 1.4.1 Attendance: Pupils attended 94.6% of sessions in 2010/2011, the same as in 2009/2010; this rate was
above that of the borough (94.4%), above the sector (94.0%), above that of the area (94.1%) and below the 2009/10 national average (94.8%).
1.4.2 Foundation Stage Profile: In 2011, pupils attaining 6 points or more ranged from 79% in writing to 100% in numbers.
1.4.3 Key Stage 1: The proportion of pupils achieving at Level 2 and above in reading at Bevington increased in 2011 from 82% to 93% and increased from 86% to 96% in writing. Performance increased in mathematics (93% to 98%) and in science (89% to 98%). The 2011 results were above the average for the borough in reading (87%), above the average for the borough in writing (85%), above the average for the borough in mathematics (92%) and above the borough average in science (90%).
1.4.4 Key Stage 2: The proportion of pupils achieving at Level 4 and above in Key Stage 2 tests was 76% in English (down from 89% in 2010); 85% in mathematics (down from 89%) and 98% in science (down from 100% in 2010). The 2011 results were below the average for the borough in English (88%), below the average in mathematics (87%) and above the average in science (90%).
1.4.5 Progress between Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2: 85% of pupils progressed by two or more levels in English, compared to 92% at the borough level, 90% in mathematics, compared to 89% and 100% in science compared to 91%. The national figures were 86%, 85% and 86% respectively.
1.5. Finance 1.5.1 In 2010/2011, the total expenditure was £1,762,839. The greatest proportion of this was spent on
teaching staff (39%), compared with a borough average of 45%.
