BASICS: EDITING PHOTOS & WORKING

WITH TEXT

Photoshop is the leading professional software for editing and adjusting photos, images and other graphic

projects. It is a very complex program, but most projects can be improved with just a few basic features. In this

tutorial you will learn to edit images through:

• Cropping

• Resizing/Rotating

• Sizing for web and for print

• Adding Text and basic graphics

Opening an Image

From the Photoshop menu select File > Open.... In the dialog box, browse for the image file and select Open.

Cropping an Image

Step One: Opening the Crop Tool

Cropping an image can make a big difference in the appearance of a photo. To crop a photo select the (1) Crop

Tool from the Photoshop Toolbar.


Step Two: Making a Crop Selection

Use the (1) corner and (2) side cropping handles to size the crop selection for your image. As you move the

crop handles, Photoshop will automatically center your selection and provide size dimensions for the crop

selection.

Note: You can move the image within the crop selection by left-hand clicking the image within the selection and

dragging the image. You can rotate the image within the crop by left-clicking outside of the crop selection and

twisting the image.

Step Three: Using Crop Ratios

From the Tool Options Bar click (1) on the Crop Restraints drop-down menu. Note: this menu defaults to

"Unconstrained" which means you can use the handles crop to any dimension you want.

Crop ratios can help you set specific crop selection dimensions and regardless of the size of the selection it will

always conform to the selected ratio. This is useful for cropping images for standard image sizes for framing. To

use a crop ratio, select (2) it from the menu and then (3) size and move your image into the selection as

desired.

Note: To reverse or rotate the image within the selection, select the (4) rotate icon from the Tool Options Bar.


Step Four: Confirming the Crop

From the Toolbar (1) select the crop tool and then in the dialog box select (2) Crop. Tip: You can also

double-click the cropped area to quickly confirm your crop without selecting the crop tool from the Toolbar.

Rotating Images

To rotate an image quickly in Photoshop, from the Photoshop Menu select (1) Image > (2) Image Rotation.

Pick a (3) rotation setting. Note: Flipping the Canvas will reverse the image within the Workspace area either

horizontally or vertically.


Resizing Images

To resize your total image, from the Photoshop Menu select (1) Image > Image Size.... In the (2) Image Size

dialog box choose your width and height in inches and/or resolution for your image. Select (3) OK.

Resolution refers to the number of pixels per inch not the actual size of the image. The higher the resolution the

greater the number of pixels. However, the higher the resolution the larger the file. Use this rule of thumb: for

images that will be displayed on the web a resolution of 72 is sufficient. For high quality printing 300 is ideal,

but 150 can be fine for small print publications, i.e. not posters.

Note: Keep the three checkboxes selected to preserve the image proportions and applied styles.


Adding Text to Images

To add text to an image, select (1) the Text Tool from the Toolbar (pick from horizontal or vertical text). Use

the (2) Tool Options Bar to choose the text settings (such as color, size, style and more). Place (3) the cursor

on the image where the text should appear and click once. (4) Enter the text.

Note: Adding text will create a new layer for your project in the Layers Pane. To edit the text later, double-click

the "T" for that layer and use the Tool Options Bar settings.


Resizing and Moving Text

With the text layer selected in the Layers Pane, click (1) the Move Tool and from the Tool Options Bar check

the (2) "Show Transform Controls" box. Use the (3) side and corner transform guides to adjust the text

(larger, smaller) OR left-click on the text and reposition the text within the image by dragging it to a new location.

Tip: Hold the SHIFT key when you use the transform guides to keep the original text constraints intact as you

resize.

To accept the text changes made, select (4) the Move Tool and in the (5) dialog box click Apply.


Adding Basic Graphics

Step One: Picking the Shape Tool

From the Toolbar select the (1) Shape Tool. You have the options for Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle, Ellipse,

Polygon, Line or a Custom Shape.

Step Two: Draw the Shape

Using the (1) Tool Options Bar set the style for the shape. With the (2) cross-hair guide left-click and drag

your shape onto the image. Note: a sizing note will appear as you drag.


Step Three: Reposition the Shape Layer

When you add a graphic a new layer will appear for your project in the Layers Pane. To edit the graphic later,

double-click the shape for that layer and use the Tool Options Bar settings with the Transform Controls

activated to change the size and properties of the shape. Note: Remember that you have the have the Move Tool

selected from the Toolbar to transform an object.

To reposition a layer over another (in this case the text over the shape), (1) select the layer you want to appear

on-top from the Layers Pane and (2) drag and drop it over the other layer(s).

Note: If you can't see a layer check to see the order in the Layers Pane and also make sure that the "EYE" is

visible for that layer.
