2 Tips For Using Emotion & Emphasis Effectively
7 © 2015 SkimaTalk, Inc.
Use emphasis to reveal important information
Don’t use emphasis too often
Emphasize the words that directly precede important information.
e.g., “The most important points are A, B, and C.
The more times you use emphasis during a presentation, the less powerful it becomes. Limit the use of emphasis to highlight only the most important points / information.

For Discussion: Example #1
17 © 2015 SkimaTalk, Inc.
Read the argument below and discuss which words you could emphasize to make the argument more powerful
Argument: Wine is better than beer
People often argue about which drink is better: wine or beer? I am here to tell you that I think wine is better.
There are many reasons why wine is better than beer. But the most important reason for me is taste. While beer is usually bitter, wine is very flavorful.
Wine is also easier to drink than beer because it isn’t as heavy. Beer makes you feel full and bloated, while wine does not.
Finally, drinking wine is fun because each bottle of wine is unique. If you don’t like wine, I beg you to give it another try. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
For Discussion: Example #2 (time permitting)

Read the argument below and discuss which words you could emphasize to make the argument more powerful
Argument: Skiing is a fun sport
I am so excited to tell you about the sport of skiing. Skiing is a great sport for many reasons.
First, skiing is a great way to get outside, get exercise, and spend time with friends and family. Second, skiing is an opportunity to visit many beautiful places such as the Alps in Switzerland and the Rocky Mountains in the United States. Finally, and most important, skiing is fun because you get a big adrenaline rush when you ski fast!
If you have never skied before, I highly recommend you give it a try!
