BODY
A. The first effects of alcoholism are physical.
i. There are short and long-term effects that can result from the use of alcohol andmany people are not aware of many of these. Alcohol is a drug and affects those
who drink it beginning with the very first sip. (Alcoholism Solutions, 2008)
According to Alcoholism Solutions, (2008) states that there are short and long

a. There are seven main short term effects of alcohol on human beings which arelower the inhibitions, poor coordination, blackouts and loss of memory,
nausea sickness, hangovers and headaches, stupor, coma.
b. In the long term drinking alcoholically can lead to a condition known as `WetBrain`.(Wernicke-KOrsakoff Syndrome).
According to Wernicke-KOrsakoff Syndrome,(n.d),`Wet Brain` is a
condition in the long term of drinking of alcohol.
c. Wet brain is a form of brain damage. Wet brain is also called Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, Korsakoff's psychosis, Wernicke's encephalopathy, and
beri beri. The symptoms of wet brain may sometimes improve with therapy
but it is often permanent and irreversible.
d. Wet brain is caused by a deficiency of thiamine which is also known asvitamin B1. Chronic, heavy alcohol consumption can lead to a thiamine

develop permanent and debilitating conditions that require life time custodial
care.
b. Alcoholism also causes severe damage in the neurons and it will causealterations.

i. It also causes Family and legal problems, violence. Changes of behavior, accidentand suicide among others.
a. At the simplest level, drinks are used to define the nature of the occasion. Inmany Western cultures, for example, champagne is synonymous with
celebration, such that if champagne is ordered or served at an otherwiseordinary occasion.
b. Alcoholism appears to be tied to societies which do not expect men to getdrunk. Further, whether alcohol uplifts or depresses is tied to cultural
expectations.(David G. Mandelbaum)
David G. Mandelbaum, (n.d) mentioned thatalcoholism appears to be tied to
the societies which do not expect men to get drunk. Further whether alcohol
uplifts or depresses is tied to cultural expectations.
c. Cultural expectations regulate the emotional consequences of drink. Drinkingin one society may regularly release demonstrations of affection, as is
common among Japanese men; in another it may set off aggressive hostility,
as frequently occurs among Papago Indians. (Joseph, Spicer, and Chesky
1949)
d.Regarding to Joseph, Spicer, and Chesky (1949) Cultural expectationsregulate the emotional consequences of drink. Drinking in one society may

men; in another it may set off aggressive hostility, as frequently occurs among
Papago Indians
ii. Violence and accidents will appear when taking alcohol.a. About 3 million violent crimes occur each year in which victims perceive the
offender to have been drinking at the time of the offense. Among thosevictims who provided information about the offender's use of alcohol, about35 percent of the victimizations involved an offender who had been drinking.About two-thirds of the alcohol-involved crimes were characterized as simpleassaults.(U.S. Justice Department, Bureau of Justice Statistics)

About two-thirds of the alcohol-involved crimes were characterized as simpleassaults.
b. Several models have been proposed to explain the complex relationshipsbetween violence or aggression and alcohol consumption. To avoid exposinghuman or animal subjects to potentially serious injury, research resultsdiscussed below are largely based on experiments on nonphysical aggression.Other studies involving humans are based on epidemiological surveys or dataobtained from archival or official sources.
c.
In United States during 2004, 16,694 death occurred as are result of alcoholrelated motor-vehicle accidents.

oung people in many cultures are introduced to drinking early in life, as anormal part of daily living.
c. The idea of a minimum age before [which] children should be `protected'from alcohol is alien in China and France; where it is a matter of law, the mid
or late teens are favored.... Children learn to drink early in Zambia by taking
small quantities when they are sent to buy beer; children in France, Italy, and
Spain are routinely given wine as part of a meal or celebration(Heath, D.B.,
"An Anthropological View of Alcohol and Culture in International
Perspective," pp. 328-347 in Heath, D.B., ed International Handbook on

e. Eighteen...remains the minimum age for purchase in the United Kingdom. However, it is not illegal for those aged five and above to drink outside
licensed premises(Plant, M.A., "The United Kingdom," pp. 289-299 in Heath,

There has been a great surge in the number of teenage crimes reported across
the world in the past few years. Any such incident has the potential to destroy
the blossoming career of most teenagers in no time. Extreme mood swings,
poor hygiene, memory loss and redness of the eyes and skin are a few
symptoms of teen drinking.
g. Alcohol abuse contributes to the high health care costs to family members.
