• Metropolitan cities like Delhi Mumbai Kolkata etc have grown multiple times beyond their capacity and has been facing large issues like poverty, slums, traffic, lack of safety & security, loss of livability factor etc. Bodies like DUAC are formed to keep a check on this rapid urbanization.

• Cochin is fast growing into a metropolitan which will end up with a similar fate as the metropolitans.

• Aluva being a sub city of Cochin is soon going to have a big impact from this development of Cochin. We as urban designers think that this is the right point at which the city can be guided, planned and designed to accommodate this large changes.

Aluva (formerly Alwaye), is a suburb of Kochi in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. Located on the River Periyar, Aluva is the industrial epicentre of the state. A major transportation hub, with easy access to all major forms of transportation, Aluva acts as a corridor which links the highland districts to the rest of the state.


Physical• Traffic and congestion issues.• No efficient Public transport networks…and not Pedestrian & cycling friendly• Parking • Neglected or disconnected from northern parts of the city across the river.• Night life/safety and security.• No public spaces• It has become a transit point and is not becoming a livable city..

Non-Physical• No identity on its own as a city.• ‘River’ the greatest potential is missing from the scene• Proposed Metro and new influx of people.• City is not growing or it is not given enough thrust to grow beyond.• Forgotten historic significance and character.

Existing city fabric…1. Aluva City is compact with Transit facilities like KSRTC &

Railway close to each other. 2. An ambiguous city loop forms the major movement system.3. Surrounded by large residential areas.4. Water body on three sides defines the city edge.5. Aluva market is a bottle neck in the city movement system.

Proposed Green Spine...1. Proposed pedestrian link connecting available land

areas along the river. This includes flood plains of shivaratri Manappuram, Periyar club site, Water Authority areas, Pump house, Town hall, palace precincts, existing park of GCDA.

2. Proposed public park and Amphitheatre at Old Periyar club Site connecting the green network.

An overview• Pedestrian trail & Cycling tracks all along the river.• Tourist desks with house boating facilities fostering the river edge as a tourist destination.• Cafeterias, kiosks etc along the edge.• Developing the existing parks and proposing new parks• Developing land of palace, water authority, Old Periyar club, temple precinct etc as public plazas.• Amphitheaters for performances.• Develop town hall to activate the edge.• New pedestrian link to the northern part of Aluva making it easy access point to city reducing congestion.• New City Centre at Thottakkattukara linked by green spine.

PROPOSED ‘STATE OF THE ART’ CULTURAL CENTERS

1. Proposed cultural center at Shivaratri Manappuram as an anchor to the green spine.

2. Proposed public park and Amphitheatre at Old Periyar club Site connecting the green network.

3. Development of a new city hub at Thottakkattukara combing Priyadarshini hall, canal area & mini market. This will reduce pressure on Core City.

4. New exhibition center along with metro Station

5. Development of Palace precinct as a heritage museum open for public linked to the green edge.

6. Up gradation of the town hall into a state of the art cultural centre.

City is not always about infrastructure…It needs color glamour excitement etc.So lets celebrate!!!Whether it be ‘Biennale Alwaye edition’ or ‘Movie festivals’ or ‘exhibitions during Shivaratri..’


How do we go about it?Technical strategies• Develop an urban design strategy plan for

the city 2020.• After detail study & analysis come up with

possible projects within available land areas.

• Conduct a wide public participation meet where people come in to see and comment on the visions envisaged.

• Phasing of projects depending on time frame, economic conditions and land concerns.

• Give out identified projects to experts from concerned fields as individual projects but under the umbrella urban Design Master plan.

brought in…• MP MLA Fund can be utilized• Advertisements, hoardings etc…• Park fees etc.• Job generator for the people of the city• Tourist influx increases the market and
