PublicrightsofwaynetworkNorth Yorkshire has over 10,000 kilometres of public rights of way. These routes are important recreational and community assets and give access to a variety of landscapes that can be enjoyed throughout the county.

Public footpathcanbeusedbywalkers.Waymarkedwithayellowarrow.

Public bridlewaycanbeusedbywalkers,horseridersandcyclists.Waymarkedwithabluearrow.

Byway open to all traffic (BOAT) canbeusedbywalkers,horseriders,cyclistsandmotorvehicles.Waymarkedwitharedarrow.

Restricted bywaycanbeusedbywalkers,horseriders,cyclistsandnonmotorisedvehicles.Waymarkedwithapurplearrow.

Usingthenetwork–firststepsOrdnanceSurvey(OS)Explorermaps(andOutdoorLeisuremapsfortheNationalParks),arerecommendedwhenusingthenetwork.At1:25,000scale,thesemapsnotonlyshowthepublicrightsofwaybutalsoimportantlandscapefeaturessuchasfieldboundaries.

Usingthenetwork–readytogoWeaimtokeepthepublicrightsofwaynetworkeasyforyoutouse.Signpostsandwaymarkswillhelptoguideyou,althoughwewouldrecommendthatyoualwaystakeanOSmapwithyou.Ifyouexperienceanydifficultieswhenusingthenetworkduetoobstructionssuchasfences,hedges,walls,overgrowth,buildings,agriculturalcropsordangerousanimals,pleasereportthedetailstothepublicrightsofwayteam.
