Who is Rapper KP? K.P. Next to Blow By dark Gable
born in south central, los Angeles, Rapper KP has seen his share of urban trials and tribula-tions. in fact, his story is straight out of compton, boyz in the hood, and Menace to society all rolled into one. the difference with KP is that he realized after high school that living on the streets and hus-tling did not have a good retirement plan so, he de-cided to channel his desires on a more positive tip. to him, pursuing a music career
was a natural evolution for someone grow-ing up watching Krayzie bone of bone thugs-n-harmony, snoop dogg, warren
g., dr dre, tu-pac, and others make their paper-legally. A health food and fit-ness fanatic, KP decided a long time ago that eating healthy and staying in shape would al-low him a peace
of mind as well as longevity. his drive stems from his desire to show the world not only his tal-ent, but also his determination to avoid typecast-ing. For KP, de-termination has
always been a key factor in his life and career.
Raw Lyrics and Tight Flow
NEXT 2 BLOW TALKING 2 THE STREETS......
looking forward to building his brand through his own record label, KP plans to use this label to create an outlet where up-and-coming artists can be success-ful as well as expose them to his holistic lifestyle and training routines. Along with fitness and releasing music independently, KP also looks forward to being able to make videos, do some acting, write music, and go on tours. currently, he is working on the release of a candid documentary depicting the stRuggles that goes with making it as a new artist in los Ange-les. completely vested into health and wellness, KP would like to open an “entertainment industry Only” gym and “holistic Fitness spa” as well as develop a health drink and/or related supplements. let’s not forget this cat can spit! his raspy, gritty, hard-core style is best described as a “straight jab to the cra-
nium!” if your soul cries disbelief or denial, KP’s lyrics will strike gut wrenching fear! his delivery is “black Mamba” relentless like a shot of tequila and a Jack daniel chaser (think dMX meets tOne lOc in el segundo)! he is “Old school gangsta with new school swag! don’t take my word for it, judge for yourself! Check out his very first mixed hit, “Next to blow”, featuring dJ skee and dMc from Run-dMc (first released in 2006), or “Talk of the Streets” fea-turing los Angeles’ legendary, dJ warrior (released sept 2009). Other high-octane joints are “trippin da 4, “so cal” “long time coming,” and the ever com-bustible, “see what i see.” there is no denying that KP is 2012’s hottest new west coast Rapper!

ARTIST SHOWCASEBEN HEINE
“His galleries are filled with great stuff and he can walk beautifully between several art directions, cre-ating amazing pieces in any way he goes”. ben heine (born June 12, 1983 in Abi-djan, ivory coast) is a belgian multidis-ciplinary visual artist. he is best known for his original series “Pencil vs camera”, “digital circlism” and “Flesh and Acrylic”.
ben heine has been drawing all his life since a very young age, he started being in-terested in photography later on, during his studies in Journalism. he doesn’t make any specific distinction between photography or drawing. Photography has actually be-come one of his major specialties although he would never have imagined he would ecome a professional photographer one day. ben always has a camera with him. he takes
pictures every minute. he also spends a lot of time improving his images. Many of his final photos look somehow like paintings. Pho-tography is all about light. the way light is used can generate a real difference and a huge impact in the resulting images. Light defines everything, the subjects, the environment, the atmosphere... ben knows it and he always tries to remove all the visible imperfections to enhance and add a dramatic touch in all his pictures in a creative way to get the best results possible.

As Ambi’ance Magazine went to print last month, we like the rest of the world were shocked and dismayed as reports hit the airwaves of yet another lost in the music and entertainment industry.
Never would we have imagined that the lost this time would be Whitney Houston. Grammy Award winning singer, actress, producer, model, mother, sister, daughter, niece, aunt, cousin and friend, Whitney with her infectious smile and five octave voice ranges will continue to leave her imprint upon the world.
Since her arrival on the music scene over two decades ago with her first hit single, “You Give Good Love”, Whitney has been a musical catalyst of inspiration to the generation of Brandy, Kelly Rowland, Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson to name a few, proving that there is nothing they could not do when music is their passion.
With accolades too numerous to list, “The Voice”, as Oprah Winfrey af-fectionately refers to Whitney, will truly be missed and yet remembered amongst the great recording artists Luther Vandross, Teena Marie, Vesta Williams, Gerald and Sean Levert, Minnie Riperton, Phyllis Hyman, Aali-yah and others who like Whitney, have left us way too soon! Grammy Award winning, singer and painter, Tony Bennett summed it up with one song, “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?”

“Thank you, Whitney, as we pay homage to your legacy.”
This month, Ambi’ance Magazine would like to say,
who is a mama’s boy? what are the charar is t ics of a mama’s boy? i f you ar confused you wont be af ter reading this ar t ic le . by Kimberly Jackson
MAMA’S BOY
you might be thinking in your mind, “what does she know about a momma’s boy?” let me tell you something, i am no foreigner to male statistics, neither any dummy to their secret identity hidden from the society. i can say one thing that is true. i am a daddy’s girl, which means i have some simple facts. so allow me a change to stroke your mind, to give the info on “how momma’s boy really feels about their moth-ers?”
First, let me ask you a question. Raise your hands if you know a momma’s boy? Mind you, he is still living with mother. Okey dokey! well said. some momma boy’s claim it’s because of their previous failed relationships or current troubles that drives them back home. he reminds you that the only reason he still live with his mother is because nobody really loves him. he believes his poignant story that his last wife or girlfriend left him for another man. he lives to please his mother, so he will fill your ear
with garbage so you can feel sorry for him. A boy or man exemplify by abnormal intimacy toward his mother and frequently by shyness and excessively superior manners.
Mama’s boy is a man or little boy who cannot think for themselves, who have to get his mothers consent to make right or wrong decisions. the boy is very dedicated to his mother and he’s not apparently a masculine man, he is seen very susceptible no matter if he is not active. he has to hear his mother voice or see her on a daily basis and most definitely more than once a day. he cannot breathe without his mother. he will be defeated if she disappear because he is not strong enough to think for himself. he might just jump off the climb or carve his throat if his mother com-mands him to do so.
what makes a momma’s boy? he was conceived to be a “rot-ten apple.” his mother focus is to never allow him to be the man. the treatment he receives from his mother replaces his absent fa-
ther. Maybe his father is a down-trodden, never around, or they just weren’t close. he just might be over protected of his mother, but that do not excuse his laziness while sitting on the couch watch-ing television eating popcorn and playing video games.
can momma’s boy eventu-ally affect his relationship with women? well of course he will. we do not need a Popsy-wopsy to give us the latest news. common sense will tell you it’s a man ego; he eventually will leave the nest one day. Okay its looks bad, and sounds bad - i totally agree. sure he is in his thirties and still living with mum; try his forties. time will most likely change for the better
if your relationship is not work-ing it’s all because you’re missing something….his mother’s touch. Of course he believes you far from a virtuous woman. his mother and you do not get alone, so he will convince you all day and night your relation-ship will never work..
you will by no means be perfect enough for him, even if you do agree with his mother’s ways. whatever he says or does his mother will applause his effort, so your opinions do not matter. his mother is his number one woman so ladies you are up for a competition. he loves his mum - and no one can change that. every-thing mum does or whatever mum says goes. if his momma don’t’ agree, it will not happen. you can’t put her back in the bottle, she‘s his gene.
to all the ladies, what if his mother controls his life to the end of the road telling him who to marry? she would any means try to ruin your marriage or he will just not listen to you. he is useless with women, weak, timorous, and missing the courage to be the man to stand up to his mother. At the mean time, what are you going to do?
A. live with it.b. head for the hillsC. Caught the first train smoking.d. All of the above.
the ball is in your hands. Remember he might be a momma’s boy, but that do not change the fact that he is still a man. he was created to love. doing his up-bringing, he watched his mother every move that gives him the hope to become the best husband one day. did you hear what i said? One day, even if it hasn’t happened yet. Just a reminder, his sole purpose is to love a woman as he loves his mother. so do not give up because of his current status. the boy just loves his mum. he was well groomed to produce a healthy and respectful relationship sooner or later.
Keep hope Alive
never say never and remember relationships are something to work at even when you feel like your momma’s boy will never change. he might invite you over his house while his mother sleeping in the other room. Placing the “do not disturb” sign on the door can become very obvious that he do not live alone. You finally change your daily schedule to make time to spend with this man, but his mother still comes first. Early on Saturday morning while pouring a glass of milk and cookies, when closing the refrigerator his mother is staring you in the face. what an embarrass-ment while you wearing her favorite lingerie.
And to momma boy’s, just a reminder, keeps momma opinions and negativity out of your relationships. stop allowing your mother to control your life making it difficult for you the live. A woman work hard to prove that they can be equal to your mother. your relation-ships should not become a fear factor to women mak-ing it too risky for them to transform a momma’s boy into a man. being a momma’s boy, you must choose to divorce your mother. even if you act as if you are a spoil apple; you still need to be peeled.

T he easiest thing in the world is to be negative
about your past and the mis-takes you have made because it is your comfort zone it is where you feel less threaten your are familiar with the past and all that you have gone through because you spent a lot of time with the hurt, pain and the negative issues it brought you. So many people have risen from some of the most painful and terrifying circumstances becoming stronger with much more insight then they ever could have imagined. The past is what makes us who we become, better.

H urt, pain, suffering through your life’s
journey is what it takes to truly understand the Grace of God! You sometimes have to weather through your storms to appreci-ate the rain. Sometimes you will have to dance in the rain instead of cry because of the rain. And sometimes you will have to hang by a thin rope before you can appreciate the solid ground and standing on your two feet. Everything we experience in life takes us to another victory. Its the lessons that we learn and share that make life beautiful and some-times it is not what we got out of it but what we give back.
bE tHANKFUL
G race abounds each new day so don’t take it for
granted that you awoke! It was God’s kiss that opened your eyes yet another day. Be thankful for the small stuff not just the big things in life. Start to thank him for the things he said no to, not just the new car, or the new house, the raise on the job, but for your hearing, your speech, your limbs that enable you to walk and dress yourself each day. For a roof over your head and the food you eat. We get so caught up on the things we want and try-ing to achieve in life that we forget to notice and thank him for the things we already have.

sKAtebOARding tO successRUBEN NAJERA
i first met Ruben Najera in 2011 at the “Manny Mania tour” (an international skateboarding showcase sponsored by Red bull) in Rancho cucamonga, cA. i found him to be charming, profes-sional and very excited about his craft. As we talked briefly, I said to him, “you know so much about this sport that i could see you being a national spokesperson for professional skateboarding.” he has done so much that it is hard to believe he is only twenty-six years old! Ruben, an accomplished, professional technical skateboard-er, received his first sponsorship at sixteen; turned pro at twenty-one and now owns a successful busi-ness. A bona fide entrepreneur, Ruben’s leisure time consists of producing music, films and videos to help motivate at-risk-youths.
you can also peep his swagger on the cover of numerous magazines! Although Ruben was born in el centro, california, you would like to think he was from beverly hills because it is evident that he is destined to become, the “new international Face of Professional skateboarding!” watch out, tony hawk!
AM: how did you get started in professional skateboarding?
RUBEN: it took a lot of hard work and dedication to my craft of skateboarding to reach the level that i am at now. i have been skateboarding for fifteen years
and just turned professional five years ago.
AM: did you have any skate-boarding idols and what if any influence did Tony Hawk have on you?
RUBEN: i would say Ronnie creager and daewon song for sure. i never looked up to tony because i grew up ‘street’ skate-boarding. now that i am older, i really respect tony for what he has accomplished financially and in his marketing and business achievements.
AM: looking at the success of the X games, it appears as though pro skateboarding is extremely popular, especially on the west coast. with that said, where does it go from here?
cOnt:
By Jonathan Fields
RUBEN: there are more kids skateboarding now than there are playing baseball. it is crazy and yes, the X-games have helped to make the sport more popular for sure, but so have street league and the dew tour. Personally, my favorite pro-contest is tampa Pro! now that contest is legit!
AM: in the 1970’s to a lot of inner city kids (minorities in particular); basketball gained popularity because it did not require a lot of money to play. would this be true with the skateboard craze that has exploded in the late nine-ties?RUBEN: sure, because it is actu-ally very easy to obtain a skateboard, especially since it cost a lot less than a bicycle.
AM: how much can a pro skateboard-er earn?RUBEN: it depends upon the sponsor-ships and contest wins. the income varies, but to put things in perspective, as an amateur skateboarder, i earned five hundred dollars after winning first place. now i earn a paid salary and receive a percentage for each of my signature products. you can for sure make a nice living skateboarding!
AM: tony hawk is considered the “gOdFAtheR” of today’s skateboard entrepreneurship. do you see him in that same light?RUBEN: yea, business wise, i definitely admire what he has done. however, i look up to as well, so many other very successful skateboarders out there.
AM: i understand you share an en-dorsement with lA clippers’ superstar: Blake Griffin?RUBEN: yes i do!
AM: how did that come about?RUBEN: Power bar broke sales re-cords with my first signature Power Bar box cover and signed me for another two years. i was honored with the cover again and this time in the same campaign as los Angeles clippers’ superstar, Blake Griffin. Blake is a real cool dude and it was an honor to be amongst the likes of him let alone the same category as a premiere athlete.
AM: where do you see the sport and yourself ten years from now?
RUBEN: still doing it big, getting exposure, pushing my skateboarding to greater heights, stepping up my tricks and taking them to the next level.
AM: can you explain/describe some of the highly skilled and difficult moves you perform?
RUBEN: i do a lot of double flip variations and ‘Manila’, which are basically ‘wheelies’. they require a lot of patience, balance and perse-verance. it takes a lot of skill and practice to master these types of tricks.
AM: have you ever been hurt?
RUBEN: i have been hurt a couple of times but nothing worse than what i would have if i were playing basketball or running.
AM: what is next for you, Ruben?
RUBEN: next for me? i would say, finishing my part for the ‘struggle skateboards’ video, Sworn. I will be film-ing and doing photo-shoots for all my sponsors, going on some big tours this year and doing a ton of skateboard demos!
I am also starting a non-profit organization to help youths who would like to get involved in skateboarding.
AM: how can our readers learn more about you and your com-pany?RUBEN: they can check out my skateboard company at www.struggleskateboards.com and my personal website, www.ruben-najera.com.
last, but not least, i would like to thank my sponsors: Struggle Skateboards, SnuggBuds Head-sets, SixStar Clothing, Etcetera Project,

With a talent so infinite and designs so innovative, Michael emmanuel has not only gener-ated positive vibes on runways throughout America, but has also left an indelible imprint on media outlets as well. in addition to a killer website prepared to launch in 2012, the ground-breaking designs of Michael emmanuel couture have also graced cable 24 People tv and the Porsha Fox talent explosion tv show in Atlanta. this venerable and long-standing member of the black Fashion designer’s Associates was also the featured designer and cover story for lashe’ Magazine’s september 2010 issue. when posed the question of how he comes up with his visions and imaginative ideas for fashion design, Michael simply says, “believe it or not, i am a hands-on designer; i take the fabric and then cut and sew. My ideas for garments can come to me at any moment of the day; regardless of whether i’m awake or whether i’m sleeping, and my ideas can even come from an arranged design or even the fabric itself. when i’m sleeping i’ll have this urge to wake up and immediately create the garment, and there are also moments when i can have a design idea in my head and once i start sewing what i’ve envisioned, the fabric will take me in another direction.”

Schatar Sapphira: Beauty & Brains
if you thought schatar sapphira-the ARtist FORMeR-ly KnOwn As: “hOttie” was just another hollywood bimbo, you are dead wrong! let us not get it twisted, she is drop dead gorgeous, but she is a chameleon in every sense of the word. classically trained, formally educated and an entrepreneur at heart, schatar sapphira is no real-ity show cliché. historians of cinema know that lucille ball, gracie Allen, Kim cole, betty white and Anna ni-cole smith had that ‘it’ factor. the ‘it’ factor is having the ability to use one’s comedic genesis to suck in an audience, establish empathy then squeeze unadulterated laughter from their souls. well, schatar sapphira is 2012’s can’t miss diva. this is not lindsey lohan people! if you do not believe me, check out her linguistic prowess as we find out what’s really going on in ‘hottie’s’ world.
Ambi’ance: So Schatar, I understand you are originally from the Northeast?
Schatar: darling, yeah i am a boston baby with Mississippi roots, but my family is from all over the world. Ambi’ance: How did you get into show business?
Schatar: i grew up in the church where i got my start by singing in the church choir. i prepared “the creation” to perform in front of my entire congregation. My acting coach at the time even though I was five, prepared me like a professional. i had to go to the library, research the author; JAMes weldOn JOhnsOn; research the his-tory of the piece, research who else had performed it and how they prepared it, then i had to prepare my own version that i could perform, from the heart. honey, i stood up in front of that whole congregation, took a deep breath and began to recite my lines. i made sure to project my voice as far as my little body could carry it. i carried it all the way to the top rows of the church’s rafters! i spoke and delivered each line with all the feeling i could muster to pay respect to both the prolific author and the resonating words of this meaningful piece. Oh, when I fin-ished, people stood up and started cheering! Now, at five, I did not know that the stand-ing up meant a standing ovation, but i could clearly see the joyful smiles on their faces and i said, “this is good!” At that moment, i knew that making people happy in this way was a way i could have a positive impact on lives.
Ambi’ance: What was it like auditioning for “Flavor of Love?”
Schatar: As an actor, we go on many auditions a day. i am going to keep it real. sometimes we have to play many different characters all in the same day, so honey, you better believe i have all kinds of different clothing in my car with all different kinds of wigs and hairstyles, (curly hair, straight hair, long hair, short hair, afros, bobs, even corpo-rate hair). i have it all so that i can be ready when i go into these different auditions. Another thing, when i go into the audition, i am already in character. this one was no different. i played the part to get the part and was booked.
SCHATAR SAPPHIRA by, Jonathan Fields
Ambi’ance: During the season, we discov-ered that you were to have been on a couple of reality shows before “Flavor of Love.” What was that all about?
Schatar: On the real, when I first arrived in hollywood, i was sleeping in a one-room place with no kitchen and no furniture. i had seen people use newspaper to keep warm, so I figured I would try it. I lined that floor with that newspaper and put my blanket right on it top of it and slept there for months. One of my friends who worked at bet came by to visit and saw that i had no furniture and no kitchen. she told me that when she moved, she was giving me her bed and she did. i was like, yes, and that was the best sleep i have ever gotten in my life! i approach this entertainment business as a business. i read the trades and got work where i could. in the entertainment busi-ness, it is about working. Reality, scripted, game shows, to me, work is work. Obvi-ously, i enjoy getting scripts with juicy roles that i can bring to life. Reality television is the same way. i like playing characters that keep people’s eyes glued to the screens and butts in the seats. Most of the shows and productions i am involved with go to num-ber one or are hit shows. i keep the audience in mind with each role. i make sure it is something that will move and inspire them. some people think it is easy, but i put many years and a lot of training into every role. i have an ivy league college degree and you had better believe i use that degree every day on the set to navigate and be savvy about what viewers want to see. it is great when the actors are happy, producers are happy, ratings are high and box office numbers look good. Ambi’ance: What is your relationship today with Flav?
Schatar: Flav is really an awesome per-son. On set he kept asking, “Are you girls alright? do you need anything?” he cared and i really appreciated that. it turns out that he is from a family of ministers and is a clas-sically trained pianist. now, i may see him at an event or meet people who say, “you know, i just saw Flav!” i was an invited guest at the comedy central Roast of Flavor Flav which recently aired again on “comedy central.”
Ambi’ance: What projects are you working on now?
Schatar: you will see my lead character, “Mikaela”, a computer hacker for the good guys in the history making production, “exedia nation”. it is one of the hottest new sci-Fi productions set on a futuristic planet. it was produced using “PAblO” technology; the same system used in the making of “Ava-tar”. i also was just in concert in hawaii and did a FOX Morning news interview there. i will be going back to hawaii for a concert this year. My new cd, “crystal Kiss,” is getting awesome exposure! You can find it on all of the trendy music sites including, AOl Music, billboard, Amazon, cd baby and itunes to name a few. everyone should go out and buy it right now! Finally, i also have my new show, “binkynistas”. check it out as well www.youtube.com/binkynistas
Ambi’ance: My two favorite people from “Flavor of Love” were you and New York. New York is currently working on several projects including stand-up. Are you inter-ested in comedy as well?
\Schatar: As i said, work is work. comedy, drama, romantic comedies, sitcoms, televi-sion, movies, music, i do it all! i just did some stand-up comedy in “the encyclope-dia show: the Moon”. i sing with a power-ful five-octave range. Here again, training is key. i trained at the Peabody conserva-tory of Music and the crittenden Opera studio. there i found that some of the high notes i could reach only a small percent-age of people around the globe could do the same. i also made sure that i learned to read sheet music and play the piano. On the real, producers love it when i can come into the studio and knock stuff out with one take. it saves time and money. Again, a win win!
Ambi’ance: Can you explain the website, www.celebrityspeakersentertainment.com
Schatar: celebrity speakers entertainment is the official page for Mr. Bruce Merrin’s, celebrity speakers bureau and Public Rela-tion Firm. On his page you will find infor-mation
cOnt:
regarding public relation promotions, photos and names of global companies and interna-tional legends such as, donald trump, Remy Martin, cartier, bMw, versace, gucci, Michael landon, Johnny carson, elvis Pre-sley, ed McMahon, the wimbledon tennis championships in the u.K, Arnold schwar-zenegger, larry King, william shatner and of course, me: schatar “hottie” sapphira. they are celebrating their 38th Anniversary this year and have booked past Presidents of the united states, all seven of the original astronauts, major sports superstars, megastar celebrities, best-selling authors, business experts and international newsmakers.
Ambi’ance: Are you currently dating any-one?
Schatar: if they are interested and wear-ing the right sized hat, they can contact me at [email protected] and then we will know.
Ambi’ance: Ambi’ance has just celebrated the month of love with our Valentine’s Day tribute. What does or did an ideal Valen-tine’s Day for Schatar entail?
Schatar: Flowers, roses of any color will do it for me. Many women like flowers, candy or a token of affection. it does not have to be expensive. something that shows you were thinking about the person. Put some thought into it! years ago a guy took the time to pick out a solid metallic keychain, had it engraved with my name, and picked a curvy font that he knew i would like. this is still one of my favorite gifts ever. how much money a person has or what they drive does not impress me. what matters is what is going on inside.
they have to have a good head on their shoulders, a strong heart and a generous spirit to match. A great smile does not hurt! in addition, a sense of humor is invaluable.
Ambi’ance: How did you get the name, Hottie?
Schatar: yeah, i am a Mtv “hottie”, but i am a screen and vocal “hottie“. i was “hottie” way before vh1 and i will continue to be “hottie”. guys have been calling me “hottie” for years. i can walk down the street minding my own business and they have given me their phone numbers, ask me to dinner, and i have even gotten a couple of marriage proposals! Once i was taking the train home from school and i was on the escalator going down into the subway. this guy was going up and he yelled out to me just to get my name, my phone number or to take me out. i waved because i knew he was going the other direction on a very steep escalator and would probably never see him again in life. do you know that man jumped across the wide metal divider and climbed across to get to my side of the escalator? he risked his life just to get my name! honey, they have called me “hottie” for years.
Ambi’ance: What would you like our read-ers to know about Schatar?
Schatar: i am down to earth and real, and when they tune in to watch or buy tickets to my shows, honey, they get a show!

PIERRE: THE KING OF THE LIGHT SKINNED COMICS by Marc howard
q. stage name?
A. Pierre
q. bir th name if differ-ent and want to share i t?
A. Decl ined
q. hometown, and where you reside now
A. Washington D.C. , Currently l iving in At-lanta
q. year you s tar ted s tand-up and the name of the club?
A. 1985 at the Comedy Café, which is no longer in existence
q. signif icant memory of your f i rs t s tand-up?
A. I rocked! Admit-tedly, I took Rodney Dangerfield and Steven Wright’s jokes and made them urban to f i t me. It worked and I had a great f irst show!
q. when you ini t ia l ly decided to be a comic how did your family and fr iends react to the news?
A. Because no one real ly knew of comics making i t big, my parents pushed me to do the safe thing. My dad was in the mil i tary, so he pushed me to the mil i tary. When I took the physical , they discovered I had a bad kidney, so they would not take me. Man I was glad for that! After that news blew my chances of gett ing into the mil i tary, my mom was pushing me to get a regular job in the government. People in D.C. had government jobs there. My friends were cool with i t and we used to rol l to the clubs together l ike an entourage. We had a bal l back then!
q. your feel ings on how far you have come in the game. have you reached, exceeded, or fe l l below your goals?
A. Fel l below. I did not know any better when I f irst started. I shot for Eddie Murphy level status. I thought al l I needed to do was be funny, move out to Los Angeles and blow up. Now, I am just proud that I can make a l iving in the business! I have not had a so-cal led real job s ince 1992 (bank tel ler)!
q. best thing that has happened in your personal l i fe s ince coming into your own as a comic?
A. I have produced my own f i lm, ‘For The Love of Money’.
q. worse thing that has happened in your personal l i fe because of comedy?
A. Loss of fr iendship. My friends supported me when I was doing the clubs around the D.C. area, but when I decided to move to L.A. my friends were saying I was not go-ing to make i t and that i t was a bad idea.
When I made my f i lm, one friend was mad at me be-cause he thought he should have had a big role my mov-ie . We are st i l l cool , but the friendship is def initely not the same anymore.
q. should comedy have sepa-rate genres? Are the genres a l ready set?
A. Yes, I think they are al-ready separate. You have clean comedy and blue com-edy (blue means-use of vulgar language) . People prefer to go to see certain comics based on the language content .
Pierre has been a s tand up comic for a lmost thir ty years , wow! in 1985, we both gradu-ated from high school in the same d.c. area. we did not get to know each other un-t i l 1992, in new york, of a l l p laces , where i had moved. he was vis i t ing to work while l iving in los Angeles . Pierre , a comic from the area where i came up, had a real good rep among the d.c. comedy com-munity. he was par t of a good group of d.c. area comics that s tar ted at the same t ime, Mart in lawrence, tommy da-vidson, and an even younger high school kid named dave chappel le . teddy carpenter and wanda sykes had also come on the d.c. scene via southern virginia .
Pierre obviously s tar ted hon-ing his comedy craf t pre def comedy Jam. back then, you did the so-cal led main-st ream rooms aka ‘white com-edy clubs’ ,
a t ime when you had to grow through the perspect ive come-dy ranks. in the urban comedy clubs, the comic who is host-ing dr ives the show.
As i t was then and s t i l l i s in the mainstream clubs, the Mc is the newer comic who’s rou-t ine is no longer than twelve to f i f teen minutes , introduces the featured comedian, who then receives twenty-f ive to thir ty minutes , and read the club announcements ( i .e . fu-ture shows, and special events and such) . Fol lowing the an-nouncements , the Mc brings to the s tage your headl iner, who del ivers a t least for ty-f ive minutes to an hour or an hour and f i f teen minutes of comedic mater ia l .
“the Mc couldn’t do any min-utes in between acts in those shows,” Pierre remembers . during that per iod for Pierre , the opt ions were s l im in the mainstream rooms and you only had a few black clubs that did a comedy show once a week. Pierre eventual ly moved to los Angeles in september of 1990 ( the year i s tar ted, hence, why we did not meet unt i l 1993) , where he l ived for a number of years earning a great reputa-t ion not only in hollywood, but a lso across the country. in a short two years , Pierre earned a spot on a newly de-veloped hbO show featur ing Afr ican-American comedians, hosted by his homeboy from the d.c. area comedy circui t , Mart in lawrence. Mart in had come to los Angeles af ter be-ing seen on star search landed a par t on the s i tcom, what’s happening now, a fol low up s i tcom from the or iginal hi t , what’s happening.
now Mart in had gone from that fa i led show to gaining a one-night s tand comedy show on hbO that was a smashing suc-cess , and par ts in successful Afr ican-American f i lms such as do the Right thing, and house Party.
Russel l simmons needed a hot young comic to re la te to the current hip hop audience so he chose Mart in . the show origi-nal ly taped two episodes. i t was such a huge success that they delayed the air ing of the show to f ind more black ta lent , eventual ly adding ten more shows. Pierre was one of those comics they added. Also added was bernie Mac, eddie griff in , yvet te wilson, cedric the en-ter ta iner, and steve harvey to name a few. Pierre had one the more memorable sets on the or iginal season that changed the landscape of the newly cre-ated urban comedy scene.
with the f i rmly implanted cul-ture of hip hop music , Pierre was a big par t of that cul ture exposing what has a lways been there to the mass publ ic . he was able to take these success-ful credi ts , work the renovated chi t ter l ing circui t and created what is now affect ionately, ‘the urban comedy circui t . ’ i say that because the black comedy scene is no longer un-der ground.
i t helped to inspire more black owned and patronized comedy only clubs al l over the country. there were the two in south central lA, the comedy Act theater and uptown comedy club in harlem.
st ra ight up, i wil l say whatever i need to say to get away from that person at that moment .” what Pierre has learned is a lesson for those who eventu-al ly want to get to hollywood and become a s tar in f ront of or behind the camera. you must know that people in the game are very insecure and non-con-frontat ional . you wil l not get to hear the t ruth that you may need to hear up front . in addi-t ion, there may be some unable to handle unfavorable blunt honesty.
when ta lking about his re lo-cat ing from l.A. , Pierre s ta ted he fel t the pressures of l iving the “hollywood” l i fes tyle . the people he encountered most ly were dis ingenuous. “too many l iars , grabbing at my pocket ,” he says. “i needed a break from the madness .” he moved to dal las , tX for a year, re-turned to l.A. , but fe l t he was no longer sol id with his act ing. he was not as hungry as be-fore; therefore , he did not take the audi t ions ser ious enough to land roles . this behavior es-tabl ished a bad reputat ion with other producers , directors , and agents .
A lesson for those who land an audi-tion, you may not get the role for which you originally auditioned. It could be felt that you are not suited for that particular role or they might want someone else.
However, if you show ability, they may have something else that suits you. Bad news travels faster than good news and bad news sticks lon-ger.
he had just marr ied his long-t ime gir l f r iend from back home and they now had a baby. this made him even more moti-vated to increase the house-hold’s cash f low. his hard work paid off landing him a role in the Robert townsend f i lm, ‘b.A.P.s’ s tarr ing hal le barry. i recal l him making al l of us jealous because he played hal le’s boyfr iend and got to kiss her in the end.
he la ter s tarred as another top support ing role in , ‘how to be a Player, ’ s tarr ing bil l bel-lamy. Pierre by then was get-t ing roles in many f i lms and hi t t ing the s tand-up road in hot demand. After his role in ‘the wash’ with dr. dre and snoop dogg, things s tar ted to s low down.
dramatic changes came his way. he and his wife divorced, he relocated to different c i t -ies , moved back to lA and now has made Atlanta , gA his home. he expressed to me that he feels his mouth hurt him in hollywood. i ’m honest about where i’m coming from,” he s ta ted to me, and s ince i know him l ike i do personal ly, i can at tes t that is t rue. i personal ly respect that about him and i know he means wel l , and is not a so-cal led “hater.”
we al l have our preferences, however, there are ways to deal with people and then there is the “hollywood” way of deal ing with people that you may not prefer. he also s ta ted, which i could at tes t to , “Other people wil l do dir ty things while smil ing in your face…i’ve worked with people that have told me
there were others in c i t ies l ike Atlanta , chicago, and houston to name a few. in our hometown of d.c. , which was eighty-f ive to ninety percent black, had a c lub that was essent ia l ly black, but wanted recogni t ion on a broader scope. they resis ted being considered a black club however, they eventual ly caved in , recognizing where the bread is but tered and came on board with the pro-gram. i wil l not put the club on blast , so do not ask, but Pierre and i know. i would move to los Angeles between nineteen ninety- three and ninety-four where i got to ob-serve Pierre’s hust le and his approach to making his career c l imb to a higher level .
PIERRE CONT:
Realizing this , Pierre de-cided that l iving in L.A. was definitely not the place anymore so he relocated to Phoenix, AZ staying three years before eventual ly moving to Atlanta, GA. Very happy there, Pierre playful ly says he is ‘Big Wil ly’ in the ATL com-pared to Hollywood.
More doors have opened for him. Pierre states that now he is a real shaker and mov-er instead of just a comic.
Touring al l around the world, he is st i l l the same well-respected stand-up comedian and continues to perform a strong act on stage. Since the f irst f i lm he produced and directed Pierre has made another t i t led, “Sl ice” and “Slice II .” Starring such talented comedians and actors l ike, Rodney Perry and Greg Al-len Wil l iams, he is currently complet ing, “Sl ice III .”The f i lms, named “Hor-rormedies” by Pierre, are a fusion of comedy and hor-ror.
He has a role in the stage play, “I Need a Man,” also starring, Ruben Studdard, Jack’ee, Christopher “Play” Martin, and Genuine. If you are looking to keep up with Pierre, you can f ind him on Facebook, and fol-low him on Twitter. Pierre is st i l l going strong with his stand-ups, act ing, writ ing, producing and direct ing. He is the kind of performer that puts in the work, de-serving your highest re-spect . He is that good kind of talent that deserves your support . So make sure you check him out whenever and wherever you can.
