Summary
The purpose of this paper is to build up an econometric
model of aggregate agricultural supply and demand which can be
used for better understanding of Taiwan's aggregate agricultural
economy, for forecasting, and for policy simulation.
The agricultural products are divided into two groups, i. e. ,
crop and livestock, For each group, functions of supply, demand
and price are constructed and estimated seperately. However,
the interretations between these two groups both in demand and
production are considered.
Since the lagged price variable is treated as explanatory in
the supply function and the current price as dependent variable
in the demand function, and with market clear condition the whole
structure constituted a recursive type, Therefore the ordinary
least square techniques can be applied for estimating individual
function. A function of marketing margin is explicetly set for
linking prices in various market levels. Finally, the product of
estimated production and farm price for both product groups
decided the level of farmer's income.
The reseach period includes data from 1973 to 1980, the
prices are deflated at the 1976's level.
From the model, the elasticities and flexibility coefficients
are calculated, The supply elasticity of crop is 0.451. The short
and long run supply elasticities of livestock are 0.516 and 4.064
respectively. And the short and long run demand elasticities of

livestock are 2.786 and 1.075 at wholesale market and 2.27 and
0.876 at farm market respectively. Price f1exibilities for the
crop are also estimated for reference.
