TREE AID works here, in the Sahel.
•The Sahel is a very dry area next to the Sahara desert.
Although it is very dry, 325 million people still live here!
• The Sahel crosses 12 countries.

Sahel Vegetation
Equator
•The Sahel used to be rich in vegetation and animals. Trees such as the baobab, mango and dawadawa, used to grow here.
•Now the vegetation is disappearing...
•Why do you think this might be?
![Page 10: An Introduction to TREE AID in Africa](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062321/568134b1550346895d9bcc34/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
DesertsThe world's largest desert, The Sahara, covers most of north Africa.
The Sahara desert is getting bigger every year.
Why do you think this could be?
![Page 11: An Introduction to TREE AID in Africa](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062321/568134b1550346895d9bcc34/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
In order to survive, people have chopped down lots of trees in the Sahel. This is called deforestation.
Once the trees are gone, the soil becomes dry and new plants cannot grow.
How do you think this affects people who live in the Sahel?
If this continues, what do you think will happen in the future?
![Page 12: An Introduction to TREE AID in Africa](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062321/568134b1550346895d9bcc34/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
