Skeletal System
• The skeletal system protects the organs of the
body.
• The skull protects the brain, ribs protect the
lungs, and vertebrae protect the spinal cord.

Bone formation occurs at a growth plate:
• Primary ossification occurs at the metaphyseal growth plate.
• Secondary ossification occurs at the epiphyseal growth plate. The secondary ossification site is in the center of the epiphysis.
38
![Page 39: Anatomy & Physiology of Animals · •Houses Bone marrow •Middle of the shaft of a long bone, and the interior portions of all flat bones •Red bone marrow signifies young long](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051608/603df0d523ed0934a16a9b3c/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)

Connective Tissue
Connective tissue binds tissues together
to give form and strength to organs and
provide protection and leverage.
40
![Page 41: Anatomy & Physiology of Animals · •Houses Bone marrow •Middle of the shaft of a long bone, and the interior portions of all flat bones •Red bone marrow signifies young long](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051608/603df0d523ed0934a16a9b3c/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)

41
![Page 42: Anatomy & Physiology of Animals · •Houses Bone marrow •Middle of the shaft of a long bone, and the interior portions of all flat bones •Red bone marrow signifies young long](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051608/603df0d523ed0934a16a9b3c/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
Ligaments / Tendons

• Tendons attach muscle to bone
42
![Page 43: Anatomy & Physiology of Animals · •Houses Bone marrow •Middle of the shaft of a long bone, and the interior portions of all flat bones •Red bone marrow signifies young long](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051608/603df0d523ed0934a16a9b3c/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
Cartilage
Three types of cartilage found in the body:
• Hyaline cartilage is found on the ends of bones and acts as cushioning in joints.
• Elastic cartilage makes up body parts such as the ears.
• Fibrocartilage provides cushioning between the inter vertebral discs.
43
![Page 44: Anatomy & Physiology of Animals · •Houses Bone marrow •Middle of the shaft of a long bone, and the interior portions of all flat bones •Red bone marrow signifies young long](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051608/603df0d523ed0934a16a9b3c/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
Fascia
• Fascia is located between the skin and the
underlying muscle or bone. It is comprised of two
layers. The top layer, superficial fascia, is
attached to the skin while the bottom layer, deep
fascia, covers the muscle or bone.
44
![Page 45: Anatomy & Physiology of Animals · •Houses Bone marrow •Middle of the shaft of a long bone, and the interior portions of all flat bones •Red bone marrow signifies young long](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051608/603df0d523ed0934a16a9b3c/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)

Synovial Joints
Allow the greatest range of movement such as:
• Gliding
• Flexion
• Extension

47
![Page 48: Anatomy & Physiology of Animals · •Houses Bone marrow •Middle of the shaft of a long bone, and the interior portions of all flat bones •Red bone marrow signifies young long](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051608/603df0d523ed0934a16a9b3c/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
