From the President Thank you everyone for another incredible year at ASFIP. I am deeply humbled to serve as President for the 2017-2018 year, and I look forward to continuing my service as a volunteer, serving the Board as the Diversity Taskforce co-chair, and ASFIP Foundation Board Member.
Thank you, Programming Committee, led by Natalia Jones for doing an outstanding job-the average member attendance to events increased from 60 members to 90 members this year. We introduced two widely received program series; The Asset Owners Series focused on institutional investors and Women Networking in Finance which had 150+ women networking together from 50+ local companies and nonprofit organizations. Ben Inker, for the Forecast dinner at the new SunTrust Park, followed by Lunch with Atlanta Fed President, Dr. Raphael Bostic were memorable events. The Blockchain Panel, Meeting with SEC and Tipper X Tom Hardin’s insights were sold out events. Our 3rd Annual Future of Finance Conference, focused on Diversity and Inclusion, was a success with 150+ attendees, and speakers like Carla Harris, Carl Richards and Jeffery Tobias.
The Diversity Task Force (Christy Loop and yours truly) launched a strategic initiative, “20 by Year 2020” The goal is to increase women society membership from 16% to 20% by year 2020. Few of the successes involved, Nation’s Top Women Portfolio Manager’s Panel discussion, a global outreach through a feature in CFA Institute’s Connexions Issue, and sponsorship of the Women’s Leadership Forum, organized by the Junior League of Atlanta.
This fiscal year, we received record funding from CFA Institute which enabled ASFIP to attract high caliber speakers and continue supporting ASFIP Foundation with its efforts. The Foundation’s financial literacy efforts led by Steve Davenport had another phenomenal year with increased outreach to the local universities, colleges, high schools and even elementary schools. The educational videos were featured in global conferences reaching worldwide audience. Fiscally, as projected we did end the year with a surplus, a portion of which was donated to the ASFIP Foundation, and I want to thank all our board members and committee chairs for that.
We also launched a new Corporate Sponsorship program which allows corporations to sponsor ASFIP events for the whole year. Thank you, Corporate Outreach Team led by David Lee.
ASFIP social media presence increased substantially, some LinkedIn posts received more than 3000 views globally, and number of LinkedIn members went up more than 30% in 1 year. We also launched a new Facebook page for ASFIP and have started a market poll monthly that provides members with views on the economy and markets through the eyes of their peers. Thank you, Technology team led by Andretta Weaver.
The Research Challenge team, led by Fred Tulley, had a record number of 19 teams of colleges and universities around South East. We partnered with universities around the city and helped universities with various events such as helping Kennesaw State Student Managed Fund with career paths in Finance, providing graders for South Eastern Hedge Fund Competition and many such initiatives. Programs During the 2017-2018 fiscal year, ASFIP organized many events and addressed many topics of interest to our members.
Several of our events supported ASFIP’s Diversity initiative. In March, we held a very popular Women’s Networking event, gathering women from ASFIP, and from the finance community in Atlanta. It attracted a lot of attention locally and will likely be repeated. Our annual April Future of Finance conference was similarly devoted to Women in Finance this year. We had a number of
impressive speakers, such as Carla Harris, Carl Richards, Jeffery Tobias, as well as two in-depth panel discussions covering relevant topics.
We also held several events addressing technological advances in finance. These included an extremely successful BlockChain Finance Panel Discussion, as well as a Big Data & Artificial Intelligence event and a FinTech panel during the Future of Finance conference.
Dr. Raphael W. Bostic met with ASFIP for the first time in March; the members really enjoyed the armchair chat with the new president of the Atlanta Fed.
This year, we partnered with CFA Society of New York to hold our first Asset Owners Series event. It attracted substantial interest within in the Institutional Investment space, and we received very positive feedback.
Our 14th Annual Forecast Event featuring Ben Inker, CFA, head of GMO's Asset Allocation, was held at a new location – the Infiniti Club at SunTrust Park. We would like to thank our Diamond Sponsor - Voya, as well as other sponsors, for their generous support of this event.

Education This year, the Education Committee worked on the CFA Research Challenge Southern Classic, university outreach and other initiatives.
In this year’s research challenge, a team from the University of South Carolina managed to beat teams from 13 other schools to go on to compete in the Americas Regional Final in Boston, MA.
The Education Committee hosted the Annual Conferment Dinner and awarded CFA charters to 30 new Charterholders. The keynote speech was delivered by Stephen Horan, CFA Institute Managing Director, Credentialing.
In order to expand our outreach efforts, we also met finance students on campus through their student managed investment clubs. Ben Cumming of SunTrust gave a presentation on financial topics in the healthcare industry to the students in the Student Managed Investment Fund at Kennesaw State University, and Rex Macey gave a presentation on technology in the finance industry to students in the student managed fund at Georgia State University. ASFIP was also in attendance for the GSU student managed fund final presentations, and Jim Shilkett participated on the panel providing feedback to the students on their work. We would like to thank Ben Cumming, Rex Macey and Jim Shilkett for their efforts on this initiative.
Additionally, the Education Committee took steps to further our involvement in the Southeastern Hedge Fund Competition, participating as graders and attending the final competition on the Georgia State University Buckhead Campus.

CFA Institute Research Challenge|Southern Classic The annual Investment Research Challenge | Southern Classic was held on February 24, 2018. A record nineteen teams submitted papers for this year’s challenge. Sixteen teams from Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina gathered at Kennesaw State University to present equity analysis and investment recommendations to a group of industry judges. United Parcel Services, Inc. was the subject company this year. We would like to give special thanks to Grace Moore, CFA from the UPS Pension Plan. She attended the event and gave a speech to those in attendance. The first round of presentations started in the morning. Three teams were selected for the final round of presentations. The University of Georgia, University of South
Carolina, and Clemson University advanced to the final round held during the afternoon session. Congratulations to The University of South Carolina for winning the 2018 Investment Research Challenge | Southern Classic. They advanced to the Americas Regional competition in Boston, MA, which took place March 19-20. Students learned the essentials for writing an Equity Research Report. They had the opportunity to be coached and critiqued by industry experts and other CFA’s. The Research Challenge – Southern Classic Committee has compiled a book of resumes of student participants. The ASFIP Board would like to thank the Research Challenge Committee and all of the judges, graders, and other volunteers who helped to bring the event together. The competition occurs each year due to the commitment of numerous volunteers. Their efforts have made the event a grand success and is one of the premier case competitions for college and graduate students. Finally, we also would like to express our on-going gratitude to the CFA Society Alabama and the CFA Society South Carolina for their continued support of the competition. Membership Your Membership Committee worked to attract and process new memberships and assist with other membership changes during the year just ended.
Committee Curtis R. Kimball, CFA – Chair Evan Byers, CFA Scott Crenshaw, CFA Marilyn Kimball, CFA As of June 30, 2018, the Atlanta chapter had 1,418
active members of all types. ASFIP chapter membership grew 2 percent this year (we had 1,390 active members as of June 30, 2017). Approximately 98 percent of the members are regular members -- i.e. CFA charter holders (1,342 or 95 percent) or long-term professionals (44 or 3 percent). The remaining 2 percent are affiliate members. Of all these classes of members, 46 are in retired status. Since 2015 ASFIP has offered Participant Associate affiliations for those who are: (1) students or (2) local professionals not interested in CFA Institute international membership or the CFA charter program. This new affiliation has been a modest success as a gateway to “try out” ASFIP association, attracting those who are only interested in the Atlanta financial community and who would not have ordinarily been interested in, or qualified for, regular membership. Participant Associates pay the same $100 annual local dues as regular and affiliate members. Student Participant Associates pay $45 annual local dues as regular and affiliate members who qualify as full-time academics (i.e., teachers or students). As of June 30, 2018, ASFIP now has a total of 55 Participant Associates. This is a slight increase from the total of 54 Participant Associates we had last year as of June 30, 2017. If Participants are added to the list of members, the total number of people affiliated with ASFIP rises to 1,452. During the year ending June 30, 2018, the following membership actions occurred (not including renewals or other net no-change actions): New members who joined or returned after a period of lapsed membership TOTAL 120 Existing members who lapsed or cancelled their membership TOTAL 104 12 other members transferred into ASFIP from other CFA societies, accounting for the 28-member net change in membership for the year. Our membership retention rate remains in the mid-80 percent range which is good compared to all the CFA Institute constituent chapters. Curtis Kimball, CFA
Treasurer The 2018 fiscal year included $32,000 project funding from CFA Institute, which offset the cost of speakers for the Future of Finance event. Half of the net profit for the 2018 fiscal year has been donated to the ASFIP Foundation.
As of June 30, 2018, the Society held approximately $397,000 in reserves, which sufficiently covers the Society’s basic or core operational expenditures. We anticipate our position of financial strength to improve
during FY19, helping support the ASFIP Foundation. We will continue to invest in opportunities and programs which create additional value for our membership.

Volunteer This year, 100 volunteers were indispensable in putting on several major Society programming events. Dozens of volunteers worked together to put on this year's CFA Research Challenge Southern Classic, the year's single largest event. Several Society volunteers provided industry mentoring to teams of college students researching this year's featured company, UPS. Many, more graded students' research papers, judged their presentations and handled logistics at the competition finals held on February 24th at Kennesaw State University.
Other events made possible by Society volunteers this year included furthering our Community Outreach efforts with our Junior Achievement Atlanta partnership, on January 26th. This year, volunteers helped teach Metro Atlanta middle school students about running a business and personal finance, by assigning corporate jobs to students who then learned to manage their compensation and living expenses. The event was held at JA Biztown's campus at the Georgia World Congress Center. We are pleased with the great turnout at all events, as well as the enthusiasm and dedication of this year's volunteers. We look forward to further building on our increasing roster of ASFIP members willing to help with future events. Strategic Advisory Committee The Strategic Advisory Committee (SAC) completed its fourth year. Kathleen (Kathy) C. Chrisman, CFA, former President, chaired the SAC. The objective of the SAC continues to be to facilitate discussions between the Society Board of Trustees and local investment community leaders about current trends in the investment industry, activity in the local area, the Society’s value proposition and strategic plan. The SAC also serves as a repository of institutional knowledge for the Society. The SAC had two in-person meetings as listed below:
August 9, 2017 Former Presidents, SAC members and current leadership met to review “State of the Society”, discuss the Strategic Plan and exchange “War Stories”.
March 21, 2018 Discussed and offered recommendations on three operational and strategic topics. Report was presented at the April 19, 2018 Board of Trustees meeting.

We understand that for any individual or family to be successful, they need a basic understanding of budgeting, banking and credit transactions, and saving and investments. Our societies 1,500 CFA members bring knowledge and experience to the charity. Through grants and volunteer activities, we partner with other nonprofit organizations with similar goals to teach students and adults about financial literacy, creating jobs, and generating wealth and effectively managing it.
