ANUNDSJÖ HYDRO POWER PLANTCHALLENGES AND STAKEHOLDER INVOLVEMENT
Angela Odelberg, Statkraft Sverige AB
FIT Hydro, Stockholm 5 June 2018
Anundsjö HPP
Located in a tributary in Mo River (Moälven) 40 km from the sea.
Run of River system typical for Sweden.
5 MW, 26 GWh, appr 12m high dam representing river
discontinuity.
Requirement from the Swedish authorities to establish a two-way
migration facility for fish and a downstream env. flow in residual
area

Mo River contains of several
tributaries and Anundsjö HPP is in
one of them

Fishway data
CAPEX: 2,7 M Euro. Design by an international consultant.
Two-way migration, smolt trap + natural fishway
Technical data: Length: 450m, slope 2%, width 2 m.
Release flow: 15/7 – 5/10: 0,8 cms, otherwise 0,25 cms
VAKI counter recently installed (July 2016) and being tested
High interest and wish for involvement from local and
national stakeholders.

Fish in Anundsjö area
Salmon and Sea Trout: Reintroduced during 2013-2017 by the municipality,
aprox 500000 Salmon and 300000 Sea Trout overall. Most of them upstream
the HPP, some in the residual area.
Follow-up is made by electrofishing
An inventory of spawning areas were made in 2001 and its aprox 9 km of
rapids and 155.000 m2 of very good/good areas for spawning upstream the
HPP
Multispecies water course with salmon, sea trout, brown trout, grayling, pike
and perch. Also a red listed specie; crayfish

Challegnes Anundsjö HPP
The greatest challenges are:- How big is the problem of predation uptream the HPP?
- What are the quality of spawninggrounds and juvenil-areas, upstream the HPP and in the residual area?
- When do the smolt start to migrate?
- Which way will smolt prefere when arriving at Anundsjö HPP?
- How to count smolt properly?
- Is the outlet affecting the upstream migration?
How do Statkraft adress the challenges?- 2016 we realized that the downstream migration probably did not work as intended
- 2016 we applied to join FIThydro
- 2017 we tried to lead the smolt to the fishway with special fishing nets and we also tried to fish during time for
downstream migration but only catched 2 smolt. None was registrated by VAKI.
- 2018 we will release stocked smolt upstreams the HPP to investigate how many are registrated by VAKI
- 2018 we will continue to modified the downstream migration device

Downstream migration device is modified
A fishing net leading the smolt to the
natural fishway instead of smolt trap
We were not able to get a straight line
for the fishing net
This year we will continue the
modifcation to get a more straight line
Mo River under development
Salmon and sea trout was extinct in Mo River somewere in 1950-70
During 1980´s restoration of the river were started by the municipality, county government and local fishermen
In early 1990´s the focus have been to reintroduce salmon and sea trout in some of the tribituaries in Mo River
2005 LIFE- project «Moälven» started and all initiatives were handled in a more wide and holistic vieu
Now there are several places who holds natural spawning in Mo River, which of course is concidered as a great
success due to restoration and reintroducing by the municipality and county governement

Local initiatives
Solveig is one of the positive forces
in the area
Thanks to her, the children in the
area are able to learn about different
fish- spices in school and fish-
friendly tecnology in hydropower
Some of her work is publiched in a
report from Environmental
Protection Agency

Bo is the one who has
done most of the
electrofishing in Mo River
He has also contributed to
reintroduction of salmon
and sea trout in most of the
tribituaries in Mo River
Local initiatives
During two years
Statkraft have met with
2 schools in the area to
talk about the work in
Anundsjö HPP
The events were also
recognised in
newspapers
Local initiatives

Together with local
fishermen Statkraft has
started a project to
reintroduce crayfish in
Anundsjö area
