Summer assignment
Sketchbook and Brainstorming
• This is compilation of the Breadth projects we will be completing in the fall for AP Studio Art.
• Please have a sketch or mocks up ready to share for each of the 11 projects.
• A sketch is not a finished piece just brainstorming of ideas.
• I would recommend spending at least 5-10 minutes per sketch. Sketches can include color, cut-outs from magazines for inspiration, practice mark making, etc.
• Sketches can be completed in a sketchbook or on loose drawing paper.
• Photography or 3D pieces are also welcome.
To start….
• These are suggested ideas, materials, and sizes. Ultimately this is YOUR portfolio and you
may change anything to highlight your strengths.
• Remember every piece needs to be unique and well planned.
Accordion Book
Suggested Materials:
Paper, mat board
Colored Pencils
Paint
Micron/ Sharpies
Accordion Book
• Objective: Illustrate a vivid dream inside an accordion book. This can be 4 separate panels or seen as one piece.
(Paper is 24x4 folded in 4 panels.) • Each panel is 4x6. Photographs must be printed
and glued to physical book. • Front/back cover must be addressed in some way
that creates unity through your piece. • Back panels are optional. *See instructor example*

• Using an original photograph as reference draw a portrait in black and white. You may work from a grid. MUST BE A PORTRAIT!!!

• Objective: Illustrate a memorable moment layering text and images.
Instructor will demonstrate paper prepping technique.

Procedure
• Create a graphic novel page in a style of your choice. Must include text in some way.
• Focus on creating a consistent “feel” either with mark making, a grid system, or color….OR ALL!
Composition
• Remember the basic elements of DESIGN
• CUBE VAMP!
• Do you have a focal point?
• Is everything in your composition supporting that focal point?

Procedure
1. Complete practice drawing of a still life of your choice. I will provide one but you can create your own. YOU CANNOT draw from your computer or phone.

Art History Playing card
• You will choose one art movement from history.
• Renaissance, Impressionism, Pop, Dada, etc
• You will redesign a “face” playing card (front and back) in the style of your art movement.
• Size and media are up to you.
Art Movements (not all)
Playing cards are a mirrored reflection front and back
Must be a perfect mirror reflection
You will present your art movement and playing card together.
• You will present two pieces of art the same size (front and back)

Alebrijes Painting
• Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. The first alebrijes, along with use of the term, originated with Pedro Linares
• This year we will be selling art at the Bishop Dunne 100 dinner. We will be selling your painting or Alebrijes sculpture.
• How to brainstorm? Take a spirit animal quiz, look at images of alebrijes, do some sketches of patterns, etc

• There are 11 projects on this power point that we will complete during the fall semester.
• I would recommend coming in on the first day of school with a sketch or idea for each.
• If you choose to do more…good for you but it is not required.
• I am available over the summer if you have questions.
