Christians were the cause of his victory in battle
. “The Emperor Cæsar M a r c u s A u r e l i u s A n t o n i n u s , G e r m a n i c u s , Parthicus, Sarmaticus, to the people of Rome, and to the sacred Senate greeting: I explained to you my grand design, and what advantages I gained on t h e co n f i n e s o f Germany, with much labour and suffering, in consequence of the circumstance that I was surrounded by the enemy; I myself being shut up in Carnuntum by 74 cohorts, nine miles off. And the enemy being at hand, the scouts pointed out to us, and our general Pompeianus showed us that there was close on us a mass of a mixed multitude of 977,000 men, which indeed we saw;
Now see why they say, “If you have communications, you have everything.”
You have an onboard communication device that needs no batteries and is in constant communication with headquarters. That device is prayer. Are you using it daily, or just keeping it for emergency backup?
Here is a very stirring account of the power of Christians at prayer. The author is the famous Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius who came to power in Rome in 160AD. The early Christian c h u r c h w a s b e i n g persecuted. But in a hazardous military setting, when the Roman “platoon leader” was in a bad spot, the Christians engaged their onboard communication device called prayer, and assisted Marcus Aurelius. He was a changed man after w h a t h e s a w a n d experienced. Let’s let Marcus Aurelius tell us in his own words.
Here you can read the Epistle of Marcus Aurelius to the senate, in which he testifies that the
Your cell phone is constantly communicating with the cell towers nearest you whether you are talking, texting or its just in your pocket. If you are lost and your phone is on, you can be located, while in the range of one or more towers. You have instant access to help, and those who need it have instant access to you. It’s a lot of technology in a little device. As they say, “If you have communications, you have everything.”
Imagine a platoon in a jungle war zone. An enemy sniper has one bullet. Who should he take out…the platoon leader, or maybe someone else in the group? Initial logic says the leader. Reconsidering this, new logic says take out the radioman. If you take out the leader, you lost leadership. If you take out the radioman, you take out backup. Backup could mean the calling for a rescue, reinforcements, artillery, bombers, and in short, the rest of the entire armed forces. They can all be reached through that radioman’s device.

burned alive. And I further desire, that he who is entrusted with the government of the province shal l not compel the Christian, who confesses and certifies such a matter, to retract; neither shall he commit him. And I desire that these things be confirmed by a decree of the Senate. And I command this my edict to be published in the Forum of Trajan, in order that it may be read. The prefect Vitrasius Pollio will see that it be transmitted to all the provinces round about, and that no one who wishes to make use of or to possess it be hindered from obtaining a copy from the document I now publish.” Wow! This rich account
is moving! Your prayers, alone or in
unison with others, are not only powerful, but they have the possible effect of a life changing witness to those for whom you pray. Remember, “if you have communications, you have everything.”
and famine. For during five days we had got no water, because there was none; for we were in the heart of Germany, and in the enemy’s t e r r i t o r y . A n d simultaneously with their casting themselves on the ground, and praying to God (a God of whom I am ignorant), water poured from heaven, u p o n u s m o s t refreshingly cool, but upon the enemies of Rome a withering hail. And immediately we recognized the presence of God following on the p r a y e r — a G o d unconquerable and indestructible. Founding upon this, then, let us pardon such as are Christians, lest they pray for and obtain such a w e a p o n a g a i n s t ourselves. And I counsel that no such person be accused on the ground of his being a Christian. But if anyone be found laying to the charge of a Christian that he is a Christian, I desire that it be made manifest that he who is accused as a Christian, and acknowledges that he is one, is a c c u s e d o f nothing else than only this, that he is a Christian; but that he who arraigns him be
and I was shut up by this vast host, having with me only a battalion composed of the first, tenth, double and marine legions. Having then examined my own position, and my host, with respect to the vast mass of barbarians and of the enemy, I quickly betook myself to prayer to the gods of my country. But being disregarded by them, I summoned those who among us go by the name of Christians. And having made inquiry, I discovered a great number and vast host of them, and raged against them, which was by no means b e c o m i n g ; f o r afterwards I learned their power. Wherefore they began the battle, not by prepar ing weapons, nor arms, nor bug les ; f o r such preparation is hateful to them, on account of the God they bear about in t h e i r co n s c i e n ce . Therefore it is probable that those, whom we suppose to be atheists, have God as their ruling power entrenched in their conscience. For having cast themselves on the ground, they prayed not only for me, but also for the whole army as it stood, that they might be delivered from the present thirst
