Ruby (our vintage trailer)
Interview with Janice John-
ston, owner of Primrose Lane
in Coburg
How long have you been in
the antique/vintage business?
Over 40 years, my husband built
a garage on 15 acres with
McKenzie River frontage. We
lived with 3 young children in
our garage for 5 years while we
saved money to purchase the
materials to build our house.
We were very frugal. My pur-
chase of a $3.00 covered pedestal
bowl was a waste of money when
the red was the wrong shade of
color. Later I saw one (red
moon and stars) at Mona’s An-
tiques at Oakway Mall. She sold
mine for $65 and offered to rent
me a $40/month space in her
shop. I kept that space for years
and went into Alethalou Mer-
cantile on Pioneer Parkway also.
I learned the business end from
Alethalou. I have owned my own
shop in Coburg for 17 years.
What attributes to your success
and longevity in the antique
business? Treating my custom-
ers as guests. Being kind and
really listening. If something
isn’t working, I change it. Con-
tinually re-inventing myself.
How did you come up with the
business name? My daughter,
Jennifer suggested Primrose Lane
from the old song “Primrose
Lane……life’s a holiday on Prim-
rose Lane.”
What is your biggest buying
regret? I don’t have any. Sure,
I’ve made a lot of purchase mis-
takes, but I learned from them
all! If I paid too much and find
it isn’t selling, I sell at my cost
and make my money liquid
again and hopefully buy smarter
the next time.
What do you enjoy the most
about your business? My cus-
tomers! I enjoy getting to know
my guests, but I must confess
that I love to talk to the kids the
most. They are like little spong-
es and are so eager to learnabout the “olden days”. I love to
tell them about our house being
the oldest one in Lane County.
It was built in 1850 by Jacob
Spores (Spores Bridge) and John-
ny Diamond who discovered
Diamond Peak and Diamond
Lake. Everyone loves to see the
room in the house that was used
as a barn for the milk cow and
chickens. Continued on Page 4

Primrose Lane cont’d fromI feel good about teaching my customers how
to find the true, most accurate value of their
items when they want to sell Grandma’s stuff
or downsize their own possessions. If I don’t
want to buy their items I direct them to the
shops that will most likely buy them.
I love to research old items and learn as muchas I can about them. My pricing is determined
more by what I pay than what the books or
computer say about the value.

Negotiate with skill and grace, avoid excessive
low offers that will insult dealers. General rule
