The prospect of salary negotiation strikesfear into the hearts of many candidates, butraising the subject of remuneration doesn’thave to be painful.

Here’s some tips from Career Builder onhow to improve your interview negotiationskills and secure a higher starting salary.

While many job seekers shy away from talk-ing about money, the good news is that em-ployers are more willing to negotiate salariesthan they were 12 months ago. Two thirds(67 per cent) of HR directors said they werewilling to negotiate salaries with leading jobcandidates, according to a recent study byrecruitment specialist Robert Half.

In the past, candidates were dissuaded

from discussing potential salary during therecruitment process, but attitudes are chang-ing. Less than one in 10 (seven per cent) of HR directors believe the company shouldalways be the first to ask about hiring salary.In fact, many employers welcome candidatesbeing upfront about money, with 21 per centsaying it is appropriate for candidates toinitiate remuneration discussions when theyapply for a role or during the first interview.

Nearly half (46 per cent) of HR directorsfeel it is appropriate to raise questions aboutsalary levels in a second or subsequent inter-view – and only 28 per cent feel candidates

should wait to the final interview or offerstage before talking about salary.

The easiest time to negotiate salary is dur-ing the recruitment stage, when the employeris convinced that you’re the best person forthe job and is keen to secure your signature.

“Before you raise the question of money,you must persuade the interviewer that youare really interested in the job and want to doit. They are not going to negotiate with any-one who is half-hearted about doing the rolein the first place,” said Corinne Mills, manag-ing director of Personal Career Managementand author of  Career Coach.

“Look at the total benefits package beforeyou start to negotiate, so you know exactlywhat you are getting and how it compareswith your previous job. For instance, if youhad more generous annual leave or privatehealth insurance in your last role then youcould ask for your salary in the new job tocompensate for the loss of these.”

To make a commercial case for why theemployer should pay you more than the ad-vertised rate, you need to do your homework.

“Research market rates for this type of role and see where their salary offer fits,”said Corinne. “If it’s on the low side, thentell them this nicely and ask if it is possiblefor them to increase their offer in line withmarket rates.”

To avoid pricing yourself out of the market,check how much similarly skilled and expe-

rienced individuals in the same sector earn.Speaking to employment agencies who spe-cialise in your industry, using online salaryguides, and quizzing industry contacts canhelp you build up a picture of remuneration.

John Lees, author of  The Interview Expert ,said: “When you raise the issue of salary, useevidence and examples to make your case.Focus on what skills you can bring, your levelof experience and qualifications, and howyou will add value to the organisation.

“Consider what you bring that othercandidates don’t. This could be things likeyour industry contacts, personal clients orknowledge of competitors.”

While it can be tempting to inflate yourprevious s alary, honesty is the bes t policy.

“Your employer will see your P45 when youstart your new job and will know how much

you have been earning – so don’t be temptedto lie and inflate your previous salary,” saidCorinne. “You could get found out and that’snot a great start to a working relationship.”

If the employer turns down your request,remain composed and react professionally.Salary negotiations are a business decision –and a refusal shouldn’t be taken personally.

“If you’re keen on the role, ask if there isroom for negotiation on benefits,” said John.

“For example, could they offer additionalannual leave or a better work-life balance,allowing you to work from home one day aweek, in lieu of a higher starting salary?

The hiring manager may have theapprove such requests, even if theoff a higher salary.”

Finally, it’s worth raising the prhaving a salary review after six orinto the job.

“Setting the expectation that youreturn to the question of salary measier to open the conversation atProve yourself in the job, and the you meet to di scuss salary, you maoutcome is more positive,” said Jo
