Q: I love your magazine—especially the question and answer
section, the upcoming games section and Sami’s section.
Those are my favorites but I enjoy reading the whole entire
magazine every month. This is a question for either the editor
or I suppose it can be a gripe for Sami … My husband plays
video poker and I play video keno. He’s always getting down
on me because he says I should play video poker. I win (and
lose) just as often as he does and I have won quite a few big
jackpots with a very small bet. Is video keno really a much
worse game to play over video poker?
Janet Jowett – Scottsdale, AZ
A: Janet, video poker aficionados, like your husband, pride
themselves in playing these slot machines because they have the
highest return percentages in the casinos. And, they should pat
themselves on the back for choosing to play games that have
paybacks of 95 percent and higher. However, just because video
poker’s payback percentages are generally higher than video
keno’s payback percentages doesn’t mean video poker is neces-
sarily the better game. Numbers can be deceiving, especially in
the case of payback percentages. Sometimes the overall payback
percentage of a game doesn’t tell the whole story.
What’s also important to keep in mind is the hit frequency of
the various wins and how much they return relative to the odds
of hitting them. For instance, when playing straight up video
keno whose 7-spot pays 7,000 to 1, the odds of hitting this
award are about 1 in 40,000. Well, guess what? These are the
exact same odds for hitting a Royal Flush! I don’t know about
how you feel, but in my opinion the 7,000 to 1 payout for catch-
ing a 7-spot sure beats the 800 to 1 payout for a Royal Flush
with a one credit bet!
Even though the odds of some keno jackpots are really out
there, like the 9-spot whose odds are 1 in 1,000,000, the rewards
for coming close are just as sweet. I’ll still take an 8 out of 9-spot
for the 4,700 to 1 payout over a Royal Flush any day. And, I
only have to wait for this award to come around 1 in 30,000
games!
With long-term payback percentages of over 91%, the long-term
odds on video keno are generally better than the long-term odds
on most of the penny slots. In fact, in most cases, the odds of
winning the highest win on a three reel slot machine is at least
once in every 100,000 spins. For video slots, the odds can range
from once in every 500,000 spins to once in every 50,000,000
spins! And, most video keno games do not offer incentives to
play max bet. So, when you wager more, your wins are just pro-
portionately higher. Therefore, you can tell your husband at
least he should be happy you’re not playing video slots!
Have fun picking your spots and playing video keno. Don’t
worry about what your husband says. Over the long run, you
will be luckier and have more winning sessions if you have a
positive attitude and are having fun, and that means playing the
games you enjoy playing. $

Still, the ability to make straights and flushes in Omaha is the
reason that the second-best starting hand is Ace-Ace Jack-Ten
double suited. That starter lets you make both Broadway
straights and nut flushes.
To emphasize why there is so much variance in Omaha, let’s
look at a big hand that happens in Texas Hold ‘Em: the best
starting hand versus the second-best starting hand or Ace-Ace
vs. King-King heads-up. With this hand, the Aces will win 82%
of the time. That makes it a 4-1 favorite. Nice!
In Omaha, the best starter of Ace-Ace King-King double suited
vs. Ace-Ace Jack-Ten double suited is just a 33% winner (41% tie
and 26% loser). The best hand has just a 7% edge! So, make sure
your starting hands consist of high cards, preferably pairs, and
have a chance to redraw. That means when you don’t hit your
pair, you can make a flush or a straight. And when you do have
an edge, raise for value!

f you’ve been introduced to poker this century, you proba-
bly know how to play Texas Hold ‘Em. A game that takes
ten minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. Omaha takes
longer to learn, so this is the start of a three-part series.
The biggest difference between Texas Hold ‘Em and Omaha is
that you’ll get four cards to start with instead of two. Then, you
make your best five-card high-hand with the five community
cards. The other difference is that you must use exactly two of
your own cards with three of the community cards.
If that sounds confusing, it is. Especially when you play the
game hi-low; more on that later. First, let’s look at a standard
$2/$4 limit game:
Betting rounds are the same as Texas Hold ‘Em with a button
signifying the dealer spot that gets cards last and acts last after
the flop. The first spot after the button posts the small blind of
$1. The next spot posts the mandatory big blind of $2.
After each player has their four cards, the player left of the big
blind must call $2, raise to $4, or fold. The action continues
around the table with the blinds acting last. All remaining play-
ers get to see the flop of three community cards.
Next, play starts with the first player left of the button who may
check or bet $2. If there is a bet, remaining players must call,
raise, or fold. After the 4th community card (the turn), the mini-
mum wager becomes $4, and it’s the same after the river or 5th
card.
Omaha Tips
There be variance, Matey. In Texas Hold ‘Em, a pair of aces is
the best starting hand. The worst is 7-2 unsuited. In Omaha, a
starting hand of Ace-Ace King-King double suited is the best,
but Ace-Ace 7-2 unsuited is weak. There are 1,326 starting hand
combinations in Texas Hold ‘Em. There are 270,725 in Omaha.
Unfortunately, most are garbage.
Starting with four cards means there are ample opportunities
for your opponents to make straights and then the flushes that
crush them. And, no straight or flush on the turn is safe when
the board pairs on the river. There are too many ways to make a
full house!

strategy player will double on 11 against a dealer’s 10 twelve
times in a row and lose all twelve, but on the thirteenth time he
will do it again, because he has complete faith in basic strategy.
Hunches and intuition have no place in the game of Blackjack!
While I'm a generous tipper, I never donate my money to the
casino. You shouldn't either.
I have a brand new book out called How To Become A Blackjack
Jedi. It teaches you everything you need to know and some
things that you haven’t even thought of before. Order it on my
website at freewebs.com/tjsblackjackcorner/mybook.htm $
Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over
20 years. He is well known for his tournament play and has beaten
some of the top tournament players in the world. He has also won
the World Series Of Blackjack. His book, “Beating The Casino At
Their Own Game” is available by email at: [email protected].
f you are not playing perfect basic strategy when you play
Blackjack, you are donating your money needlessly to the
casino of your choice. For example, if you stand on twelve
against a dealers up card of two, you will lose 29.3% of all the
money you bet in that situation. If your average bet is $10, it
costs you $2.93 to stand. By hitting, you reduce your loss by $.40
or $2.53 per hand.
If you play just 4 hours a week, the amount you donate in this
situation may surprise you. Over a year’s time, you will play
about 12,000 hands and you will see twelve vs. a two about 75
times. Standing instead of hitting your twelve vs. a dealer up
card of two over a year’s time adds up to $30 a year. Do you
really want to give your favorite casino $30 more a year? Do
you think they need an extra $30? If you're scared of busting or
taking the dealer's bust card, you're giving the casino a gift each
and every time you stand.
This is only one example of what it costs you to misplay a hand.
Each time that you deviate from basic strategy, you’re donating
your money to the casino. How much? The chart below will
demonstrate the unbelievable amounts you donate to the casino
by misplaying each hand. This chart is based on 4 hours of play
per week and an average bet size of $10.
Wrong Play Correct Play Cost of Playing Wrong
Stand with 12 vs. 3 Hit $10.20/year
Stand with A-7 vs. 9 Hit $09.28/year
Hit 11 vs. 10 Double $99.00/year
Stand A-7 vs. 3,4,5,6 Double $32.89/year
Stand A-6 vs. 7 Hit $21.89/year
Double 9 vs. 7 Hit $19.44/year
Stand 16 vs. 7 Hit $37.00/year
Stand 16 vs. 10 Hit $12.09/year
Keep in mind that this is only a partial list of misplayed hands.
Can you imagine the amount that is donated by players who
routinely play on a "hunch?” These are also the players that
complain that they never win and don't know why. Well now
they know.
Hopefully this chart is a wake-up call to those of you that know
basic strategy, but play hunches and gut feelings some of the
time. The difference between players who makes money at
Blackjack and those who don't is simple … The perfect basic

Use the Lay bet when you wish to bet with the 7. This bet is the
opposite of the Buy bet. The bet wins if a 7 is rolled, and loses if
the number is rolled. The Lay bet is unaffected by any other
number rolled. This makes it the perfect bet for the Come Out
roll, when you want the 7 to win.
To best utilize the Lay bet, bet all numbers (i.e. Lay the line)
before the Come Out roll as shown in Figure 2. If a 7 is rolled, all
Lay bets win. If a number is rolled, only that Lay bet loses. If a
2,3, 11 or 12 is rolled then nothing happens.
It’s best to have a betting strategy when making LPB bets. I pre-
fer to make PB bets after the Point is established. If a number
wins, I increase the bet by 1 unit for that number. I will repeat
and double the Lay across bet after each win. Remember, you
are only risking the loss of a single Lay bet.
FIGURE 2—LAY BET ACROSS ALL NUMBERS
Geez, what are the odds? Knowing the odds is one of the most
important parts of the game of Craps. It is the backbone of the
game. Figure 3 contains a table showing the types of LPB bets
with odds, win amount and payout (Place and Buy bets are in
Red, Lay bets are in Green). $
FIGURE 3—ODDS TABLE
Writer Daniel Cruikshank lives in Arizona, is retired, and has been
an Electronic and Live Table Games player for decades.
n my last two articles, I focused on the PASS, COME and
associated ODDS bet. Although they are the best CRAPS
bets to make, in terms of beating the house edge, they can
be boring. Is there a way to make CRAPS more exciting?
Yes there is! They’re called Lay, Place and Buy bets or LPB.
They are comparable to the ODDS bet; however, you can make
these bets without waiting for a Point to be established. In fact,
you can make these bets before the dice are rolled. There is one
caveat. Unlike the ODDS bet, these bets do not pay true odds.
To better understand the LPB bets, as opposed to PASS and
COME bets, I will explain the concept “with” or “against” the 7.
When you are betting with the 7, you are hoping the 7 will be
rolled. When you are betting against the 7, then the last thing
you want to hear is “Seven Out.” This expression occurs after a
point is established, Buy or Place bets have been made and a 7
was just rolled. Your Buy and Place bets lose. The only expres-
sion that is worse is “Point, Seven Out” which occurs when the
7 is rolled immediately after the Point was established and you
made a ton of bets. They all lose.
Make Place and/or Buy (PB) bets when you’re betting against
the 7. Since a 7 can win on the Come Out roll then these bets are
normally Off, that is they won’t lose when the 7 is rolled. Once
the point is established you make, or turn on, the PB bets.
There are several betting methods that you can use, depending
on your bankroll and how much you want to risk for each bet.
These bets are referred to by different names: Inside, Outside,
Across, etc. Keep in mind that these bets will all lose when a 7 is
rolled.
Figure 1 represents various PB bets. The red boxes indicate the
numbers being bet. A $1 bet is placed on each box.

FUNK-A-PALOOZA AT THE DIAMOND CENTER
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26
32 Arizona Gaming Guide | October 2019 | azgamingguide.com
Funkateers will converge at Desert Diamond Casinos & Enter-
tainment’s Diamond Center on Saturday, October 26, 2019 for
Funk-A-Palooza. Featured funk pioneers include the Ohio
Players, Con Funk Shun, and Zapp. Tickets start at $30 and
are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased through Star Tick-
ets and at Desert Diamond Casino’s Box Office. Doors open at
7 p.m.; show starts at 8 p.m.
The official R&B Music Hall of Fame artist, Ohio Players, has
a perfect blend of funk, soul and R&B melodies. With the
group’s contagious sound, they have easily sold over a million
copies and have been awarded numerous No. 1 hit singles
from “Fire,” “Contradiction,” “Skin Tight,” “Funky Worm,”
“Sweet Sticky Thing,” and “Love Rollercoaster.” With a total
of two gold disc and three platinum records their impeccable
musicianship, horn-driven sound, and notorious album covers
are still being celebrated and recognized today.
Con Funk Shun has been known for delivering high-energy
shows with alluring vocal harmonies, spunky choreography,
and well-orchestrated rhythmic sounds. They are, unquestion-
ably, among the pioneers of the funk era, known for their sen-
sual ballads and perfectly woven grooves. They have charted
four consecutive Gold albums and one Platinum, along with
20 hit singles, eight Top Ten R&B Hits, and a No. 1 R&B hit,
“Ffun.” Their familiar hits: “Chase Me,” “Shake And Dance
With Me,” “Ms. Got-The-Body,” “Straight From The Heart,”
and “I’m Leaving Baby,” have become timeless slow-jams.
Since the late 1970s, Zapp has always been a joyful family
affair with brothers, Roger, Lester, Larry, and Tony Troutman,
who have released funky, high-energy jams built for dancing,
loving and good times. They have revolutionized the genre of
funk with their trademark computer electro vocoder talk box-
es and bopping grooves. Zapp became a platinum success,
peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Top R&B tracks thanks to
their hip-shaking single, “More Bounce to the Ounce.” Within
five years, the band had scored a number of top-10 R&B Hits:
“Dance Floor,” “Doo Wa Ditty,” “I Can Make You Dance,”
“Heartbreaker,” and “Computer Love.” The group has collect-
ed more than four gold records and has continuously drawn
audiences worldwide with their sizzling chemistry and revo-
lutionary sound.
Treena Parvello, Director of Public Relations and Communica-
tions for the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, said, “Your
favorite hip-shaking tunes and nostalgic-filled rhythms from
the late 1970s will be showcased at the Diamond Center on
October 26 as part of Funk-A-Palooza! Come out and see the
Ohio Players, Con Funk Shun, and Zapp for as little as $30!”

CON FUNK SHUN
ear Sami, why is it that so many people at the casino
act as if they’ve lost their minds? Your “Bad Man-
ners” article in September’s issue was great and I
agree with every single point you made. Yes, people are rude,
they’re inconsiderate, they’re not grateful, and on and on. But,
people also act very irrationally when at the casino like they
take out more money when they shouldn’t, they get drunk,
etc. I think you should also do an article about other things
besides bad manners.
Dave Koski – Phoenix, AZ
Dave, I absolutely agree with you. However, we’re all human
and we do things in the moment that in hindsight we wish we
can take back. I still have a difficult time reminiscing about my
21st birthday party without sending shivers throughout my
whole body. For some reason, at the time, my young self
thought it would be okay to do several shots of vodka quickly
without any consequences. So, as my party went on without me,
I lay horizontal on my bed staring at the ceiling wondering why
I had chosen to act so recklessly?
Gambling is an exciting entertainment option, but it’s also very
easy to get swept up in the moment and make foolish decisions.
I have established strict rules for myself that I adhere to when I
visit a casino so that I don’t have any regrets later. Below are
seven things, in my opinion, people should never, ever do at a
casino!
1. Never take out money at the casino.
The fees, alone, are exorbitant. During each casino visit, you will
win some and you will lose some. Accept the ups and downs
that come with gambling. Never, ever allow the downs to make
you lose your head. Don’t invest more time and money above
and beyond your predetermined bankroll.
2. Never lose track of time at the casino.
There is a reason why there are no clocks in a casino and the
lights are always dim. They don’t want you to worry about your
obligations outside in the real world. For this reason, make sure
you wear a watch and set an alarm on your phone if you have
prior engagements you need to attend to.
3. Never play while impaired at the casino.
The lights, the music, and the energy in a casino can really get a
person pumped, because it’s an exciting environment. However,
you are making an investment with your money so never play
DOLLARS & SENSE 7 Things You Should Never Do While You’re At A Casino
By Sami Becker
SAMI’S SMACKDOWN
when inebriated. There’s a reason why some casinos offer free
alcohol.
4. Never play without using a player’s card.
Points accumulated on a player’s card can be used towards cash
back and/or free play, food, hotel rooms, show tickets, and
more! If you don’t take advantage of the extra benefits that
come with using a player’s card, then you’re giving the casino
an even greater advantage!
5. Never play if you are angry or frustrated.
If your mood changes so much while at the casino to the point
where you become upset, it truly is time to call it a day and try
your luck again another time. For those of you who are card or
video poker players, going on tilt can cost you dearly.
6. Never lose your focus at the casino.
While there are many distractions at the casino, you should con-
tinue to focus on the game you are playing. Schedule breaks in
advance if you need to. Expert video poker players and other
card players will all confirm that if you are no longer concen-
trating on the game, you should stop playing.
7. Never lose your head at the casino.
Regardless of the type of casino game you enjoy playing, you
have to accept that there will be losing sessions. Casino players
that beat a dead horse and feed more money into a machine or
at a table game, will usually end up down and seldom ahead.
Cut your losses and stay positive about your next play session
at the casino. $

The CEO was scheduled to speak at an important convention, so he asked his assistant to write him a punchy 20-minute speech.
When the CEO returned he was furious. Cornering his assistant, he didn’t hold back. “What’s the idea of writing me an hour-
long speech? Half the audience walked out before I finished!”
“I wrote you a 20-minute speech,” the assistant replied, baffled. “And I also gave you the 2 extra copies you requested.”
