Colleen Murphy was born in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec,and grew up in Northern Ontario. She is an award-winning playwright, librettist, and filmmaker based inToronto.Colleen’splayTheDecemberMan(L’hommededécembre) won the 2007 Governor General’s LiteraryAward for Drama, the CAA/Carol Bolt Award, and theEnbridge Playwrights Award. PRODUCTION HISTORY Armstrong’s War was staged in a workshopproduction, presented by Flying BearProductions and ABG Productions inassociation with Neil McPherson, atFinborough Theatre in London, UK, fromAugust 11 to 27, 2013. The world premierewas produced by the Arts Club Theatre inVancouver, fromOctober 17 toNovember 9,2013.IthasalsobeenperformedinEdmontonandWinnipeg.

7SYNOPSIS Armstrong’sWarisset intherehabilitationwingofahospital inOttawa,Ontario, inthespringof2007.Itinvolvestwocharactersandtakesplaceinahospitalroomoverthecourseofsixweeks.HalleyArmstrongisanenergetic12-year-oldinawheelchair,whowantstoearnherPathfinderscommunityservicebadgebyreadingtosomeonein a hospital. The patient she chooses is Afghan war veteran Corporal MichaelArmstrong,becausetheyhavethesame lastname. Atfirst,MichaelgreetsHalley’spositiveenergyandoptimismwithscorn.HetellsherhedoesnotwhattobereadtoandangrilytellsHalleytogoaway.Halleyreturnsthefollowingweek,determinedtoearnhercommunityservicebadge.ShedecidesthatmaybeabookaboutwarwouldbemoreappealingtoMichael,andbringsinTheRedBadgeofCourage,anovelaboutasoldierintheAmericanCivilWar.Michaelcanidentifywiththesoldierinthenovelashedescribesboththeexcitementandfearofwar.HeasksHalleyifhecankeepthebooktoreadonhisown.HalleyisencouragedbyMichael’s interest in thebook,andshareswithhimthestoryof theskiingaccidentthatputherinawheelchair.Thenextweek,Michaeladmits toHalley thathealready finishedTheRedBadgeofCourage.Michael suggests that they read their favourite parts aloud, andMichaelknows the book so well that Halley thinks he has actually read it several times.Michael’s connection to the story helps him open up about his own experiencefightinginAfghanistan.

8WhenHalley arrives the followingweek,Michael surprises herwith a story he haswrittenthathecalls“Armstrong’sWar”.Halleyreadsthestoryaloud;itisabouttwo“friends” Aidan and Danny who pledged each other that, if either was so badlywoundedtheywouldn’tbeableto liveanormallife,theotherwouldkillhimratherthan allowing him to go on living in such a terrible state. In the story, Danny iswoundedverybadly,andAidancarriesouthispromise.ThestorymakesHalleyveryupset,andshetellsMichaelthatAidanshouldnothavekilledDannyeventhoughthetwofriendshadapact.Halleyissoangrythatsheleavesthehospital.MichaelisverysurprisedwhenHalleyreturnsthenextweek.Shehaswrittenherownversionof“Armstrong’sWar”inwhichAidandoesnotkillDanny,andDannygoesonto leadanormal andhappy lifedespitehis injuries.Michael gets angrywithHalleyand tells her that her version of the story is not realistic, but he respects Halley’soptimism.MichaelandHalleynowtrusteachotherenoughtorevealdeepersecretsabout themselves. Halley tells Michael the real story of her accident, andMichaeladmits that “Armstrong’s War” is really about him and his friend Robbie. He tellsHalley what really happened when Robbie was wounded. Michael gets ready toreturn to his normal life and Halley teaches him the Armstrong family motto, “Iremainunvanquished.”
HISTORICAL & SOCIAL CONTEXT PathfindersThePathfindersareforgirlsaged12-14andarepartoftheGirlGuidesofCanada.GirlGuides can trace their roots back to 1909, when a group of girls in England wereangry that they weren’t allowed to join theBoyScouts, so they formedtheirowngroup.The Girl Guides have been active in Canadasince 1910. Pathfinders emphasizecommunity building and outdoor activities,andfocusonself-esteembuilding,leadership,teamwork, and caring for the environment.They earn badges for completing variousactivities, such as community service likeHalleyintheplay.

Following the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York City onSeptember 11th, 2001, The United States launched invasions of both Iraq andAfghanistan, the beginning ofwhat became known as the “war on terror”. CanadadecideditwouldcontributetothewarinAfghanistantofightterroristgroupssuchasAl Qaeda, who were being fostered by the corrupt Taliban government. Once theTaliban fell, Al Qaeda left Afghanistan, and Canadian forces remained to try andrebuildAfghanistanasademocraticandsecurecountry.Atthispoint,manypeoplethoughtthatCanada’sinvolvementinthewarwouldcometo an end. However, the war continued longer than predicted. The TalibangovernmenthadbeensupportedbythemajorityPashtunethnicgroupandhadbeenfinanced and supplied by factions within Pakistan. Once the government wasdefeated,thosewhohadsupporteditwerefilledwithresentmentatthelossoftheirpolitical power. The United States and its allies created a mostly non-Pashtungoverningregime,whichsawlittlesupportfromthePashtun-dominatedareasofthecountry,particularly in thesouthernregionaroundKandahar,Afghanistan’ssecond-largestcity.Asaresult,theTalibanreorganizedintoaguerrillainsurgencythatwagedawar against the Afghan government and the forces supporting it. Thismade theeffortstofightagainsttheinsurgentsverydifficult;asMichaelsaysintheplay,“youcan’tdefeataninsurgency,bestyoucandoismarginalizeit.”
10By the mid-2000s, the Canadian Armed Forces had suffered more casualties thanexpected inawar thatclaimedtensof thousandsofAfghanlives.As timewenton,theCanadianpopulationsupportedthewarlessandless.Itbecameincreasinglyclearthattherewouldbenoclear“victory”overtheTaliban.In2014,Canadawithdrewitsfinal soldiers from Afghanistan. Canada’s 12-year involvement in the war inAfghanistan resulted in the deathsof 158 soldiers and thewounding ofmore than2,000 others, andAfghanistan still has a long and complicated road to becoming apeacefulanddemocraticnation.SoldiersReturningfromWar
Thereareavarietyofsocialandpsychologicalissuesthatapersonwhohasbeeninanarmedconflictmustdealwith,themostwellknownbeingPost-TraumaticStressDisorder(PTSD). Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental illnessinvolvingexposure to traumasuchasdeath, the threatofdeath, serious injury, or sexual violence. Something istraumatic when it is very frightening, overwhelming andcauses a lot of distress. Trauma is often unexpected, andmanypeoplesaythattheyfeltpowerlesstostoporchangethe event. Traumatic events may include crimes, naturaldisasters,accidents,warorconflict,orotherthreatstolife.
PTSDamongwarveteranshasbeenknowntoexistatleastsincethetimesofancientGreeceandhasbeen calledbymanydifferentnames. In theAmericanCivilWar, itwasreferredtoas"soldier'sheart;"intheFirstWorldWar,itwascalled"shellshock"andintheSecondWorldWar,itwasknownas"warneurosis."PTDSaffectseveryonedifferently. Sufferers may experience nightmares, flashbacks, and distressingmemoriessurroundingthetraumaticevent.Theymayattempttocutthemselvesofffrommemoriesoftheeventandwithdrawfromfriendsandfamily,whichcanleadtofeelingsofdepressionandisolation.Theymaysufferfromangryoutbursts,problemswithconcentration,andinsomnia.
PlaywrightColleenMurphyhasstatedthatMichaeldoesnotsufferfromPTSDintheplay,buttheguilthefeelsforwhathappenedtoRobbieisobviouslyaffectinghimonadeeppsychologicallevel.Inrecentyears,psychologistshavebeguntoidentifywhattheycallmoral injury: theguilt thataffectsveteransoverbothkillingsomeone inacombat situation, and surviving while others have not survived. What separatesmoral injury from PTSD is a sense of violating one’s own basic moral values andtransgressingagainstwhatisright.

11TheRedBadgeofCourageThe Red Badge of Courage is a novel by American writerStephenCrane,firstpublishedin1895whenCranewas24.ThestorytakesplaceduringtheAmericanCivilWarandfocusesonayoungprivateintheUnionArmynamedHenryFleming.Henryhas a romantic image of what he thinks war will be like anddreamsofheroismandglory.However,whenheisconfrontedwiththeenemy,Henryfleesintothewoods.Heisimmediatelyashamed and wishes that he had received a wound in battle(the “red badge of courage” referred to in the title). Heeventually returns to his regiment and proves himself to be aworthy and brave soldier. Although Stephen Crane wrote thenovelwithout anyexperience inwar, the novelwas praised as being very realistic.ThenovelremainsamajorAmericantextandcontinuestobereadwidelyinboththeUnitedStatesandbeyond.
