Newly Confirmed members of Ascension Church—October 19, 2019
Dear Friends,
This year’s Winter Coat Drive and Lunch for the Needy will take
place next Saturday, October 26. Bob Kutella has taken the lead on
this over the years and his own dedication and sense of compassion for
those who are suffering due to homelessness and poverty results in this
beautiful annual parish outreach. Please see page three of today’s
bulletin for information on making a donation or how you can volunteer
to help.
On Saturday we welcomed auxiliary Bishop Joseph Perry to our parish
for our annual celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation. On the
cover of today’s DOME you see the names of the young people who
received the sacrament. Please keep them in their prayers with the hope
that the Holy Spirit will touch their hearts in a meaningful way, drawing
them more deeply into a relationship with Christ and the Church.
You may notice some work going being done on the roofs of our parish
buildings. We are applying a special protective seal coat to the
school and parish center roofs, and are replacing some broken terra
cotta tiles on the church. Thanks to all who contribute to our parish
building fund, which provided the funds to do this impor tant work
to protect our buildings before the onset of winter. The sealcoat and
patching of our parking lots that was also recently done was also
paid for using the building fund, and should extend the life of those lots
another four or five years (we’re told).
I understand that the annual State of the Parish Report for the fiscal year
that ended in June has been printed and has been sent to the printer. If it
hasn’t hit your mailboxes by this weekend, I anticipate they will be
there sometime next week. I spoke a couple of weeks ago about some of
the many things in our parish about which we can celebrate and gave a
brief rundown of the financial picture. Hopefully this written report will
give you the ability to digest the state of the parish in greater detail and
at your own leisure. If you have any questions, please feel free to
contact me. Thanks to Juliette Dols for putting this beautiful report
together.
May your week reflect the encounter with Christ
we experienced at Mass today.

Today is World Mission Sunday
Today we celebrate World Mission Sunday during this Extraordinary Mission Month. Let us remember the
mission at the heart of our Christian faith - to share the Good News with the world! The collection today for
the Society for the Propagation of the Faith supports the priests, religious and lay leaders who embody Christ’s
mercy and presence among the most vulnerable communities in our world. They have been charged to
proclaim the Word persistently; when it is convenient and inconvenient. Let us pray and offer our support for
the Church’s worldwide missionary efforts. Envelopes for this collection can be put in the regular collection
today or you can donate through GiveCentral our parish online giving program. For more information or to
donate directly go to WeAreMissionary.org/wms.
In honor of the Holy Father's call to renewed fervor for the Church’s universal mission, every parish
engaged in works of solidarity and charity with our global neighbors are invited to join the diverse community
of Archdiocese of Chicago in a Mass of Thanksgiving for missionaries on Sunday, October 27 at St. Ferdinand
Church beginning at 5:00 pm. Together we will give thanks for the local parishes that are dedicated to the
Catholic Church's world mission. More information at wearemissionary.org/emm or call 312-534-3310.
Winter Coat Drive and Lunch for the Needy
Our annual coat drive and lunch for the needy is on Saturday, October 26. We’re collecting gently
used or new coats (all sizes), hats, gloves, toiletries, etc. Please bring all donated items to church and place
them in the collection box in the East Avenue vestibule. If you would like to donate money so we can
purchase new coats, please make a check payable to “Ascension Winter Coats” or place a gift card in an
envelope marked “Winter Coats”.
We will also need many, many helping hands for Friday, October 25 for set up in the gym from 5:00
pm to 9:00 pm. and to serve our guests on Saturday and clean up.
To make a donation online, or for more information on how you can volunteer to help, go to https://
www.ascensionoakpark.com/apps/pages/wintercoats. If you have any other questions, please contact Bob
Kutella at 630-863-1046 or [email protected] or Lindsay Hammer at [email protected].
Ministry Formation
Current Extraordinary Ministers of Communion
at Mass, Ministers of Care and Lectors have been
asked to renew their intention to continue in their
particular ministry. As part of this recommitment
we ask that you attend a Ministry Formation
Session. These sessions will be held on Monday,
October 28 at 7:00 pm or on Saturday, November
16 at 1:00 pm. The sessions will be held in church
and ministers are asked to attend one of the
sessions.
If you currently serve in one of these ministries
and have not received information about this
recommitment and these sessions, please contact
Jim Wojcik at [email protected] or
call him at the parish office at 708-848-2703.
Remembering Loved Ones
Who Have Died All are welcome to a Solemn Mass on Saturday,
November 2, The Commemoration of All the
Faithful Departed (All Souls’), at 10:30 am to
celebrate and hold dear the memories of all our loved
ones who have died in the past year, and to pray for
all the faithful departed. Hospitality will be provided
by Ministers of Care after Mass.
It is a venerable Catholic custom to remember the
dead in November, our month of saints and
souls. So bring photos of your loved ones who have
died and place them on any of the four shrines before
Mass, beginning November 1. Please put your name,
address, and telephone number on the back of your
photo. Thank you for sharing these images with our
parish, and helping to surround us with reminders of
our departed loved ones, whom we commend to the
Lord’s mercy.
Together, let us remember and pray for all who
have died.

Youth Ministry
ASP 2020—First of all Thank You for your
continued support of the Youth Ministry’s ASP
Trip. This past July we had 23 crews (115 teens and
48 adults) travel to Kentucky to help make homes
warmer, safer and drier. Our crews built ramps and
porches so people could have an easier time getting
in and out of their homes. We installed dry-wall and
painted. We repaired electric service to rooms that
had been without power for years. We installed
roofs and siding to keep people dry in their
homes. All of this while growing our faith and the
relationships among our parishioners.
Preparations are now under way for our 2020
trip! We will be leaving July 18, 2020 (around 8:30
am) and returning the July 25 (around 1:00 or 2:00
pm). We don’t know where we will be assigned this
year but we’re looking forward to another week
filled with hard work, faith and a few laughs along
the way.
The sign-up sheets are available on the parish
website at https://www.ascensionoakpark.com/apps/
pages/ASP. There are application forms for both
teens and adults that wish to join the trip. The forms
and a deposit check are due October 31. Please drop
them off at the Parish Center in an envelope marked
Attn: ASP. If you have any questions please contact
Paul Kraft at [email protected].

Who Are the Knights of
Columbus?
(a) Old guys with funny hats and swords
who love a good parade.
(b) Patrons of an explorer who has a questionable
human rights record.
(c) The latest parish social event
planning committee.
(d) Men who like to hang out in KofC beer halls.
None of the above!
We established the Ascension Knights in 2018
with the goal of bringing together all men of the
parish, regardless of stage of life, marital status,
school affiliation, physical abilities, etc. We are
committed to supporting each other and putting our
faith in action. No matter what your interests are,
there’s something for every Catholic man: Praying
the rosary on Saturday mornings, taking overnight

card nights, providing the parish with funding and
service. Or, what will you start? Learn more
