In2002,RobBurkeinstigated,launchedandiscurrentlytheConvenorofJazzandPopularStudiesatMonashUniversity(MelbourneAustralia).RobrecognisedanunfulfilledneedinMelbourne'sjazzacademiclandscape,establisheditscoursecurriculumandprovidedaclearpathwayformusicianstodeveloptheirproficiencyandaptitudefortheiracademicandperformanceoutcomes.Hisbackgroundasaclassicallyeducatedmusicianalsoenableshimtotraversemanymusicalgenresandheisinauniquepositiontospeaktostudentsandcolleaguesabouttheirrequirements/concernsandprovidebalancedoutcomes.Hisongoingresearchfocusesonissuesrelatingtohowwerespondtoimprovisedjazz:artistically,criticallyandpersonally.Hisworkincludesstudyingtheprocessesandoutcomesofmusicparticipationandmusiclistening.Aninternationallyacclaimedperformerandcomposer,Robhasreleased12CD'sunderhisownnameandhascomposedandperformedonafurther300CD's.HissensitiveandbalancedperspectivehasallowedRobtotraversemanydifferentstylesandthishas,inpart,beenexpressedascollaborativeperformanceswithinternationalleadersinclassical,jazzandexperimentalmusic.Hisembraceofmanygenresofmusicandtheclearexpressionofhisdiversityinhisroleasaneducator,researcherandperformer,hasgivenrisetoavibrantdialectthatresonatesthroughhisstudentsandalsohisperformances.IdentifyinganeedforthefacilitationofaresearchgroupintheOceanicarea,RobinstigatedandiscurrentlythepresidentoftheAustralianJazzandImprovisationResearchNetwork(AJIRN).ThefocusofAJIRNistheinterdisciplinarystudyofjazzandimprovisationinAustraliaandNewZealandthroughthepresentationofanannualconference. ExperimentationinImprovisedJazz:ChasingIdeas–Routledge2018Book:ExperimentationinImprovisedJazz:ChasingIdeaschallengesthenotionthatinthe21stcentury,jazzcanberestrainedbyasingular,staticdefinition.Theworldwidetrendforjazztobemarginalizedbythemainstreammusicindustry,aswellasconservatoriumsandschoolsofmusic,runstheriskofstiflingtheinnovativeandchallengingaspectsofitscreativity.Theauthorsarguethattoremainrelevant,jazzneedstobedynamic,proactivelyexperimental,andfacilitatenewideastobemadeaccessibletoabroaderaudience.ExperimentationinImprovisedJazzexploreskeyelementsofexperimentaljazzmusictodiscernwaysinwhichthegenreisdeveloping.Thebookbeginswithanoverviewofwhere,whenandhownewideasinfreeandimprovisedjazzhavebeencreatedandaddedtothecanon,developingthegenrebeyonditsinitialroots.Itmovesontoconsiderhowandwhymusicianscreatefreeandimprovisedjazz;thedecisionstheymakewhileplaying.Whataretheyrespondingto?Whataretheydependingon?Whataretheythinking?Theauthorsanalyseandsynthesisethecreationoffreejazzbycorrelatingthelatestresearchtothereflectionsprovidedbysomeoftheworld'sgreatestjazzinnovatorsforthisproject.Finally,thebookexamineshowwerespondtofreeandimprovisedjazz:artistically,criticallyandpersonally.FreeJazzis,thebookargues,anenvironmentthatdevelopsthroughexperimentationwithnewideas. 3. Thisthree-yearsustainedprojectinvestigatesthedifferentwaysformallypre-composedmusicalideascaninformmorefluidstructuresofimprovisationinjazzperformance.Portfoliooutputsincludetwelveoriginalcompositions,threerecordingprojectsandforty-threenationalandinternationalperformances.Newcompositionsweredevelopedthroughacombinationofimprovisedperformanceandauralanalysis,andwereinformedbyextanttheoriesofreflectivepractice.Theportfoliooutputsdemonstratearangeofapproachesthatfacilitateanevolvingrelationshipbetweenpre-determinedandimprovisedmusic.

6. SardinianLiturgy:aninvestigationchoiceinamusicalspontaneousgroupimprovisation.

d. ThisprojectinvestigateschoicesmadeinafreeimprovisationcollaborationbetweenAustralianandItalian(Sardinian)jazzimprovisers.CentraltotheensemblewasSardinianfolk/jazzimproviserPauloAngeli,whometamorphosesthetraditionalSardinianguitarandimprovisesbasedontraditionalSardinianfolkmusic.

e. Howdoimproviserswhohavedisparatemusicalcultures,convergetomakechoicesinfreeimprovisation?

Theresearchinnovationliesinthemethodologyoftheperformanceprocessandreflection(postediting)ofhowchoicesaremadeinafreeimprovisationalsettingincludingtheconvergenceoftwodisparatemusicalcultures:SardinianandAustralian.Previousstudieshavefocusedonanethnographicmethodology(WilsonandMacDonald)whilstthisstudyfocusedontheelucidationofexperientialoutcomes,basedonaheuristicmethodology,wherebythepractitionersdiscoverandproblem-solvethroughcollaborativeimprovisationandpost-performanceanalysis.

TheGravityProject-ledbyPaulGrabowskyandRobBurke-isanine-pieceensemblepresentingacontemporaryculturalprismofmusicalexperimentationincompositionandimprovisation.Artistically,theoverarchingaimfortheGravityProjectistocreateatransculturalmusicaldialoguethroughacarefullystructuredcollaborationofJapanesemusicians(whoareleadersintheperformanceoftraditionalJapanesemusicandarapper),performingwithAustralianimprovisingandelectronicfocusedmusiciansplayingoriginalmusicofthenow. GrowingfromconcertsinbothAustraliaandJapan,theGravityProjectwasdevelopedin2017,firstlyincompositionbyPaul

GrabowskyandthendocumentedinarecordingsessioninTokyo.Therecordingwasfurtherdevelopedthroughtheadditionofhip-hopbeats,andadetailedre-structureanddeconstructionthrougheditingandmixing(AaronChoulaiandJoeTalia). Thefoundationoftheperformances(compositions)isinformedbytheperformanceoftheShakuhachiandKotothroughtheFuketraditionofZenmusicandthegesturalinfluenceinNohTheatre.Attheheartofthemusicmakingisexperimentationandtheexplorationofpotentialpossibilitiesthroughthecreationofasonicecology:eliteperformersfromdiversebackgrounds,improvising,interacting,anddiscoveringsoundsbothinsideandoutsidetheirareaofexpertiseandculturalhabitat.

ThenewCDrelease,BarlinesandBeyondexplorestheintersectionofWesternstyleimprovisationandIndianClassicalmusic,developingaworkingmodelforcross-culturalensemblecollaboration.ThemembersoftheensemblecomefromAustraliaandIndiawithmusicalexpertiseintraditionalIndianmusicandaWesternjazz/improvisedsensibilitywhichincludesalloriginalcompositions.RobBurkeandStephenMagnusson)composedcompositionsforimprovisationoverIndianmodes,(whichweresuperimposedwithdiatonicandpantonal

harmonicapproaches).DebasisChackrobortyperformedwithinhisparametersofexpertise(modal)andcreativitybutwasopentointegratingthejazzapproachoftheStephenandRob.Inasense,eachmusicianboughttheirowntraditiontothemusicandadaptedtheirexpertiseandcreativitytotheoverallsonicenvironmentandmusicaloutcome.

ThismusicalcollaborationoriginatedwithfourimprovisingmusiciansmeetinginaNewYorkrecordingstudiointheLowerEastVillage–toplay–withoutapre-composedcomposition;justbelief,expertiseandcreativity.Thecornerstoneofthecompositionisthebringingtogetherofmusiciansthatcomefromajazzsensibilitybutimprovisingmusicthatisverymuchmusicofthe21century;morespecificallytheimprovisingmusicianandmachine.Themachine,operatedbyGeorgeLewis,createsitsown‘voice’

through‘inthemoment’improvisationsthatenhanceandmultiplyorasGeorgepromulgates‘shapeshifts’.Improvisationsincludeexperimentation,takingpositions,trust,choice,agency,creativity,determinacyandindeterminacy.Further,thisprojectisaboutinnovationthroughtheagencyofhumanandmechanicalinteraction;theunderstandingofhowthemusicianinteractswiththemachineisanareaofinterestthatisrelevanttotwenty-firstcenturyasitallowsthecreationofgreaterpossibilities,greateropportunitiesandultimatelyfreedomtoexpress.(RobBurke)

Cantoatenore,atraditionalSardinianfolkmusiccantakeabitofgettingusedto:it’slikeapolyphonicthroatsingingbarbershopquartet.Sometimesthesongsareasoldastheisland’shills,othertimesthesongsarespontaneouscommentsonwhat’shappeningrighthereandnow.RobBurkeinitiatedandledtheprojecttocombineAngeliwiththreeAustralianjazzmusiciansandanItalianrhythmsection,allofwhomshareajazzsensibilityandanopennesstoideasandapassionforcreativity.

DoTruewithRobertBurkeandKennyWerner,cametofruitionwiththehelpofDaveSchroeder(directorofJazzatNYU).ItwasSchroederwhoorganisedtherecordingandintroducedBurketobrilliantNewYorkjazzpianistKennyWerner.DiscussionsregardingtherhythmsectionthatwouldbeneededfortherecordingledtoWernersuggestingmusiciansthathehadastrongrapportwith:JohannesWeidenmuellerandRichieBarshay–anempathythatisevidentinthisrecording.TherepertoireselectedisacombinationofcompositionsbyRobertBurke,KennyWerner,andPaulGrabowsky.

RobertBurke,TonyGould,NickHaywoodandTonyFloyd,well-knownnamesindividually,togetherareoneofAustralia’sleadingquartets.Withthebreadthofexperienceandlong-standingconnectionbeingwhatitis,thequartetsettheirliveperformancesalight.Now,recordedliveforthefirsttime,thatflowandcreativitywhichliftsthisquartetabovetherest,iscapturedinthisexpansivesixtrackrecording.Theselectionoftrackswasguidedbythecreativitywithintheperformancesofthegroup,andfeaturescompositionsbyRodgersandHartandColePorteralongsidecompositionsbytheQuartet.Liveat

RobBurke(Sax)andTonyGould(Piano)firstrecordedintheduetformatin‘96(Gateway)followedbyATinRoofforTheRainin’99.Theyhavealsobeenperformingregularly,forthelast15years,togetherasaQuartetwithTonyFloyd(Drums)andNickHaywood(Bass).Duringthistime,thepairhavecreatedasteadfastfoundationofmusicalunderstandingandexpression.Theperformanceoutcomeofthismusicalrelationshipistheblendofaflexibilityofideasandwhichonlytimecannurture.BurkeandGouldhavespentmuchtime
