At  A  Glance   Project  Scope

Project  Methodology

1   What  does  it  mean  to  be  a  leader?

Collabora6on    within  industry

Advocacy    for  policy  change

Transparency    throughout    opera,ons

Commitments  to  improve

Innova6on  and  thought  leadership

Employee  and    cultural  engagement

In  2009  Patagonia  collaborated  with  Walmart  to  create  the  Higg  index,  an  assessment  tool  and  common  sustainability  measure  for  supply  chains.  Through  industry  collaboraAon,  the  group  has  grown  to  over  50  leading  apparel  brands.

Water  and  energy  usage  are  the  key  challenges  for  sustainability  in  brewing.  Anheuser-‐Busch  pursues  aggressive  targets  and  uAlizes  them  to  moAvate  and  inspire  their  employees.

2   What  climate  change  threats  does  forestry  pose?

Biodiversity   Land  Degrada6on  &  Deforesta6on

Opera6onal  Intensity

What  are  forestry  companies  doing  to  combat  climate  change?

•  Species  cross-‐breeding  •  Renewable  energy  •  Carbon  offsets  and

credits

•  Energy  from  biomass  (cogeneraAon)

•  Wood  pulp  recycling  •  Forest  management

systems

How  are  compe.tors  responding?  3

Develop  a  comprehensive  set  of  quan,ta,ve  metrics  that  measure  key  biodiversity,  deforesta,on  &  land  degrada,on,  &  opera, onal  indicators

Explore  the  feasibility  (economically  and  environmentally)  of  a  wood  product  recycling  program  for  wood  pulp  and  panels  businesses

Leverage  San,ago  Climate  Exchange  (SCX)  membership  to  foster  forestry  specific  business  &  environmental  coopera,on,  and  broaden  reach  beyond  La,n  America

Provide  customers  a  plaTorm  to  compare  Arauco’s  forest  management  cer, fica,on  programs  with  their  compe, tors

Develop  a  single  and  unifying  message  to  enable  a  greater  coordina,on  and  collabora,on  on  sustainability  efforts  within  their  core  businesses

Eliminate  use  of  fossil  fuels,  and  become  a  net  energy  producer  (via  biomass  and  other  cogenera,on  techniques)  without  carbon  offsets

Engage  stakeholders  across  mul, ple  plaTorms,  and  develop  and  enact  ac,on  plans  that  incorporate  their  environmental  concerns

Short  Term:  Meet  with  key  core  business  representa, ves  to  author  a  mission  Long  Term:  Establish  regular  intervals  to  periodically  vet  their  mission
