Life Sentence
Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. 1 Timothy 6:18-19 One of my favorite movies growing up was Escape from Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood in the title role as Frank Morris, one of the men involved in the June 1962 escape. I saw it for the first time while staying with my grandparents, and it became a routine to watch it with my grandpa. The mysterious nature of their escape fascinated me, the question of whether or not those three escapees survived the swim to San Francisco. About this same time last year, Susan and I had the opportunity to vacation in San Francisco, at the recommendation of some friends. While there, the main “touristy” goal I had in mind was a visit to Alcatraz Island and see the famous Rock. Moreover, I wanted to see the cells that housed those men. Sure enough, the grates through which they climbed to make their escape have been kept in the same condition. Even the paper Mache heads are still on display. Whether or not they’re the originals, I have no idea. While on that tour, we heard a recording from various detainees recalling their incarceration when Alcatraz still functioned. They remarked that the worst part of doing their time on the Rock was its proximity to San Francisco. Located only 1.5 miles into the San Francisco Bay, the lights and sounds of the city could be heard and seen from their cells. One former inmate even remarked that on holidays, notably New Year’s Eve, you could hear the laughter, the chatter, the parties, and festivities. A couple of weeks ago, the Wednesday night Bible study looked at a passage from the Old Testament prophet, Zechariah. In Zechariah’s message, we find a beacon of hope to a group of people imprisoned, not by any foreign power or cell walls, but people imprisoned by a mindset of discouragement and despair, a sense that life simply was the way it would be. In the midst of this, Zechariah mentioned one who will usher in an age of peace, a new ruler whose reign would stretch to the absolute ends of the earth. We know the name of this ruler, quite familiar in fact. He is the gospel itself. For a few Sundays, we’ve focused attention of the promise of Jesus given in John 10 and echoed throughout the New Testament scripture, the offer of life and life abundant. When we feel mired in the sensation that all life has to offer is drudgery and discouragement, Jesus shows us a life lived with purpose and meaning. Jesus reveals are not captive to any dominant force or power. We are to live free in the abundant life Christ offers, a life that is truly life. I’ve always been fascinated by that particular sentence in the Bible, because it reminds us that there is more to life than we could imagine. There is a life promised to us, offered freely. A life that helps us understand there is more going on than we might realize. There is life beyond the material realm. It is life devoted to caring and loving others, just as Jesus lived. This is the life we’re meant to live, for the sake of God and each other. In that life, we escape the bonds of despair to find joy and celebration right here in our midst. Through Jesus, we discover the life that is truly life.

Please note: If for some reason you are not available to help on the day that you volunteered to work, we ask that you please don’t forget to find a replacement for yourself so there is adequate coverage during the worship service. Also, if you have a change in the schedule for the children’s nursery or children’s church, please contact the monthly coordinator so that the change can be made prior to the printing of the worship bulletin. However, any permanent changes in the schedule should continue to be handled by the lead coordinator.

DNOW is hosting an event at Camp Caswell on Oak Island. Tony Nolan of TNT ministries will be speaking at the camp and worship will be led by the DNOW band. The theme of this DNOW is Rise. The website (www.dnowcaswell.org) states, "As a collection of churches gath-ered together, we want to see stu-

44%. If that pace holds this year, the percentage of churches with choirs is only 37%. I mention this only to say that worship is changing in churches to meet the needs of a new gen-eration. I also mention this with thanksgiving for the Knightdale Baptist Church Worship Choir. I am grateful for each choir member, their love and faithful dedication for the Lord and willingness to
In a recent post on the Baptist State Convention Renewing Worship blog, Thom Rainer, president and CEO of Lifeway Christian Resources, wrote of Nine Rapid Changes in Church Worship Services. The information was taken from The National Congregations Study by Duke University from 2007. One of the major changes mentioned in the study was the fact that church choirs are disappear-ing. From 1998 to 2007, the percentage of churches with choirs decreased from 54% to
lead the congregation in worship. Also, I appreciate their willingness to learn new worship songs to help meet the needs of our con-gregation. If you are looking for a place
