Healthy Church Plan for ECBA Acts is the Model – by Joe Taylor, DOM
On what is referred to as the Day of Pentecost the church
was born. On that day the Anointing of the Spirit, the Empower-
ing of the Spirit, and the Working of the Spirit thru His Church
began its march forward. Truly, the gates of hell have not pre-
vailed against Christ’s true Church. By the power of God the church still
marches on.
On the Day of Pentecost the Apostle Peter stood and preached a sermon
that sent waves of change throughout the world. The message that changed
the world was The Gospel, preached under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
That same word preached under the leadership of the Spirit of God has the
same effect today. If a few men with the right message and the true Power of
God turned the world upside down then why couldn’t it happen today? It can
and does!
What was Brother Peter’s message? (Acts 2) First, He spoke of the
Gospel Events: Jesus—who was approved of God by miracles, wonders, and
signs done by the power of God among you. He was crucified, He died, and
God raised Him from the dead. All of this was accomplished by the deter-
mined counsel of Almighty God. He preached Jesus: the One who fed the
hungry, healed the sick and raised the dead. He preached Jesus the God/Man
who gave His life a ransom for many! He preached Jesus who demonstrated
the love of God by dying for sinners. He preached Jesus the One and Only
Son of God given by the Father as the gift of salvation for mankind. The
Gospel events center around the person of the Gospel. Second, He spoke of
the Gospel Witnesses: David saw all of this before hand—the scripture wit-
nesses, history tells His story, and what was promised has come to pass. The
apostle said we are eye witnesses to this amazing gospel. We have experi-
enced it and it has changed our lives. The Gospel is replete with the testimo-
nies of saints whose lives Jesus has forever changed. We can drive a stake in
the ground and go from it in any direction and find a witness to the Gospel.
Third, He spoke of the Gospel Promises: the promise of the Gospel is simple.
When preached, the Holy Spirit will take the Word of God and convict of sin,
righteousness, and judgment to come. If a sinner will turn to God from their
sins then He promises: Forgiveness of sins and the Indwelling of the Spirit of
the Living God.
Fourth, and finally the Apostle preached about the Gospel conditions:
“Peter said unto them, Repent…” —Repentance is essential in regard to the
Gospel changing a life. (Acts 20:20-21; Acts 3:19; Luke 24:47.) The scrip-
ture says, “They that gladly received His word were baptized…” —Faith is
essential for salvation. (Acts 16:31; Ephesians 2:8-9) —Baptism is an essen-
tial act of obedience for all believers who commit to the Gospel and are
saved. (Literal reading verse 38 “Be baptized because your sins are for-
given.”) Repentance and faith in the New Testament are always followed by
immersion. We follow Jesus in believer’s baptism.
The story of the Eunuch from Ethiopia puts a face on the gospel mes-
sage: notice Acts 8:36-ff. He had faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, he repented,
and was baptized in response to the Gospel message.
The Gospel is the message that sent shock waves across the New Testa-
ment world. Preach the message; give witness to this message and don’t hold
back!
