SEPARATING MIXTURES
August 31
HOW DO YOU SEPARATE?
How can you separate mixtures?
SEPARATING Separating is based on the
difference in physical properties of the substances…Think about how you would separate a bag of m&ms
Some mixtures are easier to separate than others
What would you rather separate?
FILTRATION Filtration: technique that uses a porous
barrier to separate a solid from a liquidHeterogeneous mixtures (sand & water)
DISTILLATION Distillation: separation technique that
is based on differences in the boiling points of the substances involvedHomogeneous mixtures (most)2 liquids
When precisely controlled, distillation can separate substances having boiling points that differ by only a few degrees
CRYSTALLIZATION/BOILING Crystallization: separation
technique that results in the formation of pure solid particles from a solution containing the dissolved substance
You boil out the liquid and are left with the solid crystalsSalt water
CHROMATOGRAPHY Chromatography: technique that
separates the components of a mixture (called the mobile phase) on the basis of the tendency of each to travel or be drawn across the surface of another material (called the stationary phase). Example-Ink
Different masses travel different distances!
REFLECTION Could you separate the colors in black
pen ink? How could you do this and what separation technique would you use?
