Welcome to the 2017-2018 edition of The Aurora Health Care
Pharmacy Residency Annual Newsletter!
As this year comes to an end for us as current residents, we are all reflecting on the wonderful
memories, the many lessons learned, the growth of our clinical skills, and the appreciation we
have for our future careers. We know we could not have achieved this goal without each other
and without the support of all of our amazing preceptors. We also could not have done this
without YOU! We are all honored to be joining you as proud Aurora Pharmacy Resident
alumni, and look forward to continuing the tradition of achieving great things within our
personal lives and careers.
On a system level you may have heard that Aurora Health Care recently merged with Advocate
Health. We are now the 10th largest hospital system in the country. At this time no changes
will be made to the residency program but in the future editions of this newsletter you may
see some updates!
“Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and thinkers,
but most of all surround yourself with those who see greatness within you, even
when you don’t see it yourself” –Edmund Lee

Residency Program Overview
This year, Aurora Health Care’s pharmacy residency program trained 25 PGY1 residents and 9
PGY2 residents that will be continuing their careers across the nation! PGY1 pharmacy
residency programs included Aurora Health Care Metro, Inc., Aurora West Allis Medical Center
and Aurora BayCare Medical Center. PGY1 Community-Based programs included Aurora
Health Care Metro, Inc and Aurora Specialty Pharmacy. PGY1 and PGY2 2-year programs
included Administration and Informatics. Finally, PGY2 programs included Oncology, Critical
Care, Cardiology, and (new this year) Infectious Diseases. The vision from our pharmacy
leaders sustains Aurora Health Care’s reputation as offering premier residency programs in the
country, and we are proud to enter a quarter of a century of residency training.
A few big things occurred this year including the completion of the first year for our PGY2
residency in Infectious Diseases with Courtney Horvat being the inaugural resident. Rachael
Prusi, PharmD, MSGH has stepped into the role of residency program director for the Aurora
BayCare Medical Center residency program. We also welcomed back Sarah Zukkoor Zorn,
PharmD, BCPS-AQ-Cardiology as the PGY2 Cardiology program director. Last but not least, the
Aurora Community-Based Specialty Pharmacy Residency was officially granted accreditation!
This year also marked the first annual Wisconsin Pharmacy Residency Conference (WPRC) that
took place during the PSW Educational Conference in April. This conference was attended in
place of Great Lakes Residency Conference. This opportunity allowed Wisconsin residency
programs to highlight the amazing work that the residents across the state are doing. All
Aurora residents presented platform presentation as well as a poster on their yearlong
projects. Julie Dagam and Craig Grzendzielewski participated on the planning committee as co-
chairs! Aurora Health Care had a huge presence from both residents and preceptors during
this conference, and we look forward to continuing to attend this conference in years to come.
Based on feedback from the past several residency classes, the Aurora Health Care Metro, Inc.
residency program will be switching up the staffing model. Residents will continue to spend
time in site based decentral roles, but will change how they gain experience in central
pharmacy and central order verification. The goal is to give residents more consistent
experience in fundamental core pharmacist duties in central pharmacy while still maintaining
the core duties of oversight, dispensing, and order verification balanced with decentral
activities.

Showing our unique personalities during our Halloween party!
We organized an event to raise money to purchase gifts for 3 families that we “adopted”
for Christmas. As a department we raised a total of $900 to split between these families!
We were able to get all of the items they requested plus some winter essentials! We enjoyed shopping for these gifts as well as
wrapping them during our Christmas party!

We had a blast reminding ourselves how out of
shape we are during volleyball, football, and
soccer throughout the year!
As a class we enjoyed brewery tours, wine nights, crunchwrap nights, and more!
