Basic Dimension TypesFigure 35-1 shows the six basic dimension types you will be learning to insert and edit in thismodule. They are linear, aligned, angular, diameter, radius and leader dimensions.Advanced dimensioning is covered in the AutoCAD Customization Modules.

Inserting Dimensions
In this module, you will be taught how to insert and edit linear, aligned, angular, radius,
diameterand leaderdimensions. When a dimension is inserted, it resides on the current layerand assumes the color of that layer.
Before dimensioning a drawing, it is important to check the following settings:
1. The current layer. That is the layer the dimensions will reside on.
2. The current dimensioning style. The dimension you insert with anydimensioning command will use the properties of the current
dimensioning style.3. The DIMASSOC or DIMASO setting. This setting controls whether the
dimensions being inserted will be an associative, non-associative orexploded dimensions. See Module 34 page 34-3.
The current dimensioning style willappear in the Dimensioning toolbar. Aquick way to check or change thecurrent dimensioning style is with thedrop-down menu. Try to get into the
habit of using this toolbar menu to insert yourdimensions as it will speed up your productivity.

AutoCAD Command: DIMLINEARThe DIMLINEAR command is used to insert a lineardimension. A linear dimension is a dimension that is eitherhorizontal or vertical.

The fastest way to dimension an object is to dimension it very quicklyinserting all the dimensions required. When all the dimensions are in,change them using the Properties window and the STRETCH command.
Don't try to fix the dimensions as you insert them.

When AutoCAD finds the dimension or measures the object in adimensioning command, it does not display the actual number. The symbol is displayed. This symbol means default or the actual measurement. If
you want to add the text REF after the real measurement, enter it as : REF.

Step 1 Open the drawing AutoCAD 2D
Workalong 34-1 that you completed inModule 34. See Figure Step 1.
Step 2 Save and name the drawing
AutoCAD 2D Workalong 35-1.
Step 3 Enable the
display of the Dimension Figure Step 1toolbar. Set thedimensioning style Module English as the current

Step 4 Enter the system variable shown below to enable associative dimensions. For
more information, see Module 34 page 34-3.
If you are using 2002-2008, set the system variable DIMASSOC as follows:
Command: DIMASSOCEnter new value for DIMASSOC : 2
If you are using 2000-2000i set the system variable DIMASO as follows:Command: DIMASOEnter new value for DIMASO : ON
Step 5 Set layer Dimension as the current layer.
Step 6 Enter the DIMLIN command shown below to insert a linear dimension. See
Figure Step 6.

Specify first extension line origin or : (end) P1
Specify second extension line origin: (end) P2(Ensure to snap to the ends of the lines.)
Specify dimension line location or [Mtext/Text/Angle/Horizontal/Vertical/Rotated]: P3(You can place the location of P3 by eye. Try to match the figure the best you can.)

The snap mode nearest can be used for many
purposes while drawing in AutoCAD. If you wantto snap to an object but not any particular locationon that object, use this snap mode.
