Series 90 Family of Pumps and Motors
Series 90 pumps also feature a range of auxiliarymounting pads to accept auxiliary hydraulic pumpsfor use in complementary hydraulic systems. A com-plete family of control options is available to suit avariety of control systems (mechanical, hydraulic, electric).
Series 90 motors also use the parallel axial piston/ slipper design in conjunction with a fixed or tiltableswashplate. They can intake/discharge fluid througheither port; they are bidirectional.
They include an optional loop flushing feature thatprovides for additional cooling and cleaning of fluid inthe working loop. In the variable motors, hydraulic orsolenoid-operated two-position control valves movethe swashplate between minimum and maximumdisplacement positions.
Series 90 hydrostatic pumps and motors can beapplied together or combined with other products ina system to transfer and control hydraulic power. They are intended for closed circuit applications.
Series 90 variable displacement pumps are com-pact, high power density units. All models utilize theparallel axial piston / slipper concept in conjunctionwith a tiltable swashplate to vary the pump’s dis-placement. Reversing the angle of the swashplatereverses the flow of oil from the pump and thusreverses the direction of rotation of the motor output.
Series 90 pumps include an integral charge pump toprovide system replenishing and cooling oil flow, aswell as control fluid flow.

The following equations are helpful when sizinghydraulic motors. Generally, the sizing process isinitiated by an evaluation of the machine system todetermine the required motor speed and torque toperform the necessary work function. Refer to
BLN-9885, "Selection of Driveline Components," fora more complete description of hydrostatic drivelinesizing. First, the motor is sized to transmit the maxi-mum required torque. The pump is then selected asa flow source to achieve the maximum motor speed.

System Parameters
Case Pressure
Under normal operating conditions, case pressuremust not exceed the continuous case pressurerating. Momentary case pressures exceeding thisrating are acceptable under cold start conditions, butstill must stay below the maximum case pressurerating. Operation with case pressure in excess of
Rated Speed is the speed limit recommended at fullpower condition, and is the highest value at whichnormal life can be expected. In a machine propelapplication, maximum motor speed during unloaded,on-road travelling on level ground should not exceedthis limit.
Maximum Speed is the highest operating speedpermitted and cannot be exceeded without reducingproduct life and risking immediate failure and loss ofhydrostatic power (which may create a safety haz-ard). In a machine propel application, maximummotor speed must never exceed this limit during any
condition (i.e., top speed downhill). In addition, applications must have a braking system, redun-dant to the hydrostatic transmission, which willstop and hold the vehicle should hydrostaticcontrol be lost.
Maximum with Special Hardware requires ap-proval from Sauer-Sundstrand Application Engineer-ing. Special unit hardware and/or special operatingconditions may be required.
Consult Bulletin BLN-9884 (“Pressure and SpeedLimits”) when determining speed limits for a particu-lar application.
these limits may result in external leakage due todamage to seals, gaskets, and/or housings.

Continuous pressure is the pressure at which thehydrostatic system could operate continuously andstill achieve acceptable hydrostatic life. This pres-sure level varies depending on operating speed, andon the life requirements for a particular application. While most mobile applications require system pres-sure to vary widely during operation, a "weightedaverage" pressure can be derived from a machineduty cycle. (A duty cycle is a means of quantifying thepressure and speed demands of a particular systemon a percent time basis.) Once a duty cycle has beendetermined or estimated for a specific application, contact Sauer-Sundstrand Application Engineeringfor system life ratings for the application.
All pressure limits are differential pressures (refer-enced to charge pressure) and assume normal chargepressure and no externally applied shaft loads.
System pressure is the differential pressure be-tween system ports A and B. It is a dominant operat-ing variable affecting hydraulic unit life. High pres-sure, which results from high load, reduces expectedlife in a manner similar to many mechanical assem-blies such as engines and gear boxes. There areload-to-life relationships for the rotating group andlife predictions can be performed by Sauer-Sundstrand Application Engineering.
Rated system pressure is the highest normallyoccurring system pressure which should be en-countered during normal machine use. Motorsshould be sized so that the peak machine load canbe developed at or below this pressure. In mostapplications, the pump pressure limiter settingshould not exceed this value. Adequate hydro-static system life will not be achieved if the systemis runs at or near this pressure continuously.
Maximum system pressure is the highest intermit-tent pressure allowed. It is determined by the maxi-mum machine load demand, usually during accel-eration or load spikes. Maximum pressure is as-sumed to occur usually less than 2% of the totaloperating time.
Both the maximum and rated pressure limits must besatisfied to achieve the expected life.

Fluid Specifications
Hydraulic Fluid
Ratings and data for Series 90 products are based onoperating with premium hydraulic fluids containingoxidation, rust and foam inhibitors. These fluids mustpossess good thermal and hydrolytic stability toprevent wear, erosion and corrosion of the internalcomponents.
These include premium turbine oils, API CD engineoils per SAE J183, M2C33F or G automatic transmis-sion fluids, Dexron II or IIE (not Dexron III) meetingAllison C3 or Caterpillar TO-2 and certain agriculturaltractor fluids. Hydraulic fluids per DIN 51524, part 2(HLP) and part 3 (HVLP) are suitable. Fire resistant
fluids are also suitable at modified operating condi-tions. For more information see Sauer-Sundstrandpublication BLN-9887 or 697581.
Refer to publication ATI-E 9101 for information relat-ing to biodegradable fluids.
It is not permissible to mix hydraulic fluids. Contactyour Sauer-Sundstrand representative for moreinformation.
Temperature and Viscosity
Temperature and viscosity requirements must beconcurrently satisfied. The data shown at right as-sumes petroleum/mineral based fluids.
The high temperature limits apply at the hottest pointin the transmission, which is normally the motor casedrain. The motor should generally be run at or belowthe continuous temperature . The maximum tem-perature is based on material properties and shouldnever be exceeded.
Cold oil will generally not affect durability of thetransmission components, but it may affect theability to flow oil and transmit power; thereforetemperatures should remain 16°C (30°F) abovethe pour point of the hydraulic fluid. The minimumtemperature relates to the physical properties ofcomponent materials.

For maximum unit efficiency and bearing life the fluidviscosity should remain in the recommended vis-cosity range . The minimum viscosity should beencountered only during brief occasions of maxi-mum ambient temperature and severe duty cycleoperation. The maximum viscosity should be en-countered only at cold start.
Heat exchangers should be sized to keep the fluidwithin these limits. Testing to verify that these tem-perature limits are not exceeded is recommended.

To prevent premature wear, it is imperative thatonly clean fluid enter the hydrostatic transmissioncircuit. A filtration system capable of controllingthe fluid cleanliness to ISO 4406 Class 18/13(SAE J1165) or better, under normal operatingconditions, is recommended.
The selection of a filter depends on a number offactors including the contaminant ingression rate, the generation of contaminants in the system, therequired fluid cleanliness, and the desired mainte-nance interval. Filters are selected to meet theabove requirements using rating parameters ofefficiency and capacity.
Fluid And Filtration
Filter efficiency may be measured with a Beta ratio1
(βx). For simple closed circuit transmissions with
controlled reservoir ingression, a filter with a (β10
)ratio of 1.5 to 2 has been found to be satisfactory. Forsome open circuit systems, and closed circuits withcylinders being supplied from the same reservoir, aconsiderably higher filter efficiency is recommended. This also applies to systems with gears or clutchesusing a common reservoir. For these systems, (β
x)
ratios of 10 to 20 are typically required.
Since each system is unique, the filtration require-ment for that system will be unique and must bedetermined by test in each case. It is essential thatmonitoring of prototypes and evaluation of compo-nents and performance throughout the test programbe the final criteria for judging the adequacy of thefiltration system. See publication BLN-9887 or 697581for more information.
1Filter βx-ratio is a measure of filter efficiency defined by ISO 4572. It is defined as the ratio of the number of particles greater than agiven diameter ("x" in microns) upstream of the filter to the number of these particles downstream of the filter.

System Requirements
Brake Warning
The reservoir should be designed to accommodatemaximum volume changes during all system operat-ing modes and to promote de-aeration of the fluid asit passes through the tank.
A suggested minimum total reservoir volume is 5/8 ofthe maximum charge pump flow per minute with aminimum fluid volume equal to 1/2 of the maximumcharge pump flow per minute. This allows 30 secondsfluid dwell for removing entrained air at the maximumreturn flow. This is usually adequate to allow for aclosed reservoir (no breather) in most applications.
The loss of hydrostatic drive line power in anymode of operation (e.g., forward, reverse, or "neu-tral" mode) may cause the loss of hydrostaticbraking capacity. A braking system, redundant tothe hydrostatic transmission and adequate to stopand hold the machine, must therefore be providedin case the condition should develop.
Reservoir
The reservoir outlet to the charge pump inlet shouldbe above the bottom of the reservoir to take advan-tage of gravity separation and prevent large foreignparticles from entering the charge inlet line. A 125µm screen over the outlet port is recommended.
The reservoir inlet (fluid return) should be positionedso that flow to the reservoir is discharged below thenormal fluid level, and also directed into the interiorof the reservoir for maximum dwell and efficient de-aeration. A baffle (or baffles) between the reservoirinlet and outlet ports will promote de-aeration andreduce surging of the fluid.
Overpressure Protection
Series 90 motors (as well as other system compo-nents) have pressure limitations. As Series 90 mo-tors are not equipped with overpressure protection,it is necessary that relief valves or pressure limitersare present elsewhere in the high pressure circuit toprotect components from excessive pressures.
Series 90 pumps are designed with a sequencedpressure limiting system and high pressure relief valves. When the preset pressure is reached, the pressurelimiter system acts to rapidly de-stroke the pump inorder to limit the system pressure. For unusually rapidload application, the high pressure relief valve functionis available to also limit the pressure level. Refer topublication BLN-10029 for more information.
NOTE: For systems with relief valves only, highpressure relief valves are intended for tran-sient overpressure protection and are notintended for continuous pressure control.Operation over relief valves for extendedperiods of time may result in severe heatbuild up. High flows over relief valves mayresult in pressure levels exceeding the nomi-nal valve setting and potential damage tosystem components.
Case Drain
A case drain line must be connected to one of thecase outlets (L1 or L2) to return internal motorleakage and loop flushing flow to the system reser-voir. The higher of the two case outlets should be
used to promote complete filling of the motor case.Since the motor case drain fluid is typically thehottest fluid in the system, it is advantageous toreturn this flow through the heat exchanger.

Installations that require additionalfluid to be removed from the main hydraulic circuitbecause of fluid cooling requirements, or circuitsrequiring the removal of excessive contamination, will benefit from loop flushing. A loop flushing valvewill remove heat and contaminants from the mainloop at a rate faster than otherwise possible.
In series 90 motors, the current loop flushing reliefvalve design includes an orifice which controls flush-ing flow under most conditions. A combination oforifice size and charge pressure relief setting willproduce a specific flushing flow. A number of orificesizes are available, resulting in several differentflushing flow rates as illustrated in the accompany-ing graph. Loop flushing flow between1.5 - 4 gpm (5 and 15 l/min) is generally suitable formost applications, but specific operating conditionsmay require more flow.
Charge ReliefValve
Loop FlushingShuttle Valve
Loop Flushing
The specific rate of flushing flow selected for anapplication will depend on the amount of fluid volumein the working loop, the number of motors in the circuit, and possibly other factors. Motor loop flushing flowmust be considered in the calculation of total pumpcharge flow required, to ensure that charge pressureis not reduced excessively in any operating condition.See section titled "Charge Flow Requirements."
WARNINGExcessive motor loop flushing flow may resultin the inability to build required system pres-sure in some conditions. Correct charge pres-sure must be maintained under all conditionsof operation to maintain pump control perfor-mance in hydrostatic systems.
NOTE: Consult your Sauer-Sundstrand representa-tive if loop flushing will be required in a circuitwhich contains a flow divider / combiner. Aremote loop flushing valve may be required.

Series 90 variable motors include mechanical dis-placement (stroke) limiters. Both maximum and mini-mum displacement of the motor can be limited.
Adjustments can be made by loosening the seal locknut and rotating the limiter screw. The seal lock nutmust be re-torqued after any adjustment.
Series 90 variable motors are shipped with the mini-mum displacement limiter set at the lowest displace-ment setting and the maximum displacement settingset at full displacement.
WARNINGCare should be taken in adjusting displace-ment limiters to avoid an undesirable condi-tion of output flow or speed. The sealing locknut must be re-torqued after every adjustmentto prevent an unexpected change in outputconditions and to prevent external leakage

Series 90 motors are available with an optionalspeed sensor for direct measurement of motor out-put speed. This sensor may also be used to sensethe direction of motor rotation.
A special magnetic speed ring is pressed onto theoutside diameter of the cylinder block and a Halleffect pulse pickup sensor is located in the motorhousing. The sensor accepts supply voltage andoutputs a digital pulse signal in response to thespeed of the ring. The output changes its high/lowstate as the north and south poles of the permanentlymagnetized speed ring pass by the face of thesensor. The digital signal is generated at frequenciessuitable for microprocessor based controls.
This sensor will operate with a supply voltage of 4.5to 15 VDC, and requires a current of 12 mA at 5.0VDC under no load. Maximum operating current is 20mA at 5VDC. Maximum operating frequency is 15kHz. Output voltage in “High State” (VOH) is sensorsupply voltage minus 0.5 VDC, minimum. Outputvoltage in “Low State” (VOL) is 0.5 VDC, maximum.
NOTE: It is not acceptable to energize the 4.5-15VDC ppu with 12VDC battery voltage; itmust be energized by a regulated powersupply. If it is desirable to energize thesensor with battery voltage, contactSauer-Sundstrand for an optional speedsensor. Refer to PIB 9602M.
The sensor is available with a Packard Weather-Pack 4-pin sealed connector or Turck EurofastM12x1 4-pin connector.
NOTE: Strain relieve and / or protective cover instal-lation with this device is required by thecustomer.
NOTE: System FMEA must be done by the customerfor each application with the help of Sauer-Sundstrand Application Engineering.

Series 90 motors are available with a variety ofsplined, straight keyed, and tapered shaft ends.Nominal shaft sizes and torque ratings are shown inthe accompanying table.
Torque ratings assume no external radial loading.Continuous torque ratings for splined shafts arebased on spline tooth wear, and assume the mating
spline has a minimum hardness of Rc 55 and full
spline depth with initial lubrication.
Maximum torque ratings are based on fatigue andassume 200 000 load reversals. The permissiblecontinuous torque may approach the maximum rat-ing if the spline is immersed in circulating oil.
NOTE: Recommended mating splines for Series 90splined output shafts should be in accor-dance with ANSI B92.1 Class 5. Sauer-Sundstrand external splines are modified Class5 Fillet Root Side Fit. The external spline MajorDiameter and Circular Tooth Thickness di-mensions are reduced in order to assure aclearance fit with the mating spline.
Shaft Options
NOTE: Other splined shaft options may exist. Con-tact your Sauer-Sundstrand representativefor availability.

External Shaft Load Orientation
Bearing life is a function of several operating condi-tions including shaft speed, system pressure, swash-plate angle, fluid viscosity, fluid cleanliness andexternal loading. The bearing will not limit motor lifeto less than 10 000 hours (B-10) at rated speeds forany duty cycle assuming proper fluid conditions aremaintained and no external loads are present.
Particle contamination and poor viscosity reduce thelife of bearings.
External radial forces on the shaft transfer to thebearing and are additive to the internal bearingloads. The net effect on bearing life is thus a functionof the orientation as well as the magnitude of theexternal shaft load. Maximum allowable externalshaft load (R
e) is determined from the maximum
allowable bending moment (Me) in the Allowable
Shaft Loading Table, given as a function of orienta-tion per External Shaft Load Orientation figure.
Re = Me /L
Although shaft deflection increases, bearing life canbe optimized by orientating the external load so thatit is not additive to the internal loading.
To offset the internal bearing loads and optimizebearing life, the external load should be oriented ataround 180 if possible.
External overhung adapters (or outboard bearings)are recommended for installations with high radialand/or axial loads. Tapered input shafts or "clamptype" couplings are recommended for installationswhere radial shaft loads are present. Splined shaftsare typically not recommended installations whereradial loads are present.
Please contact your Sauer-Sundstrand representa-tive for a bearing life analysis if:
• continuously applied external radial loadexceeds 25% of the maximum allowable.
• design life is greater than 10 000 hours.
Provide information on location and direction of theexternal load.
