1. Executive summary
Established in 1996, BASIX has emerged as one of the leading microfinance
institutions in India. It is cited for its scale, creativity, commercial orientation, and
collaborative philosophy in a sector often marked by limited operations, routine
approaches, donor dependence, and territoriality. More specifically, BASIX has
systematically addressed the twin issues of risk mitigation and cost reduction with
an eye to attracting investment from the mainstream capital markets. At the same
time, these actions have enabled the organization to maintain and expand its
lending in rural areas, including lending for agriculture in drought-prone
geographies. It is working with over 320,000 poor households, in 50 districts of
nine states across India with Rs. 2,213 million loan outstanding and an on-time
repayment of 98.2%, with a team of 2,300 staff.
We are external consultants assessing the implementation of MIS at various levels
of business process with the help of modeling techniques such as ER diagrams and
decision tree and process modeling techniques such as DFDs. We have also
provided an example of the database maintained by the organization.
Problem Statement
The challenges faced by MFIs like BASIX in order to increase their reach more
and more poor people in need of money and exercise proper control and implement
a monitoring system for disbursement and collection of funds.

Goals and Objectives
The logo depicts the vision of BASIX. Inspired by the Yin-Yang duality, the logo
has broadly the following meaning.
The circle represents the globe, our mother Earth, half of which is dark blue,
representing poor, who are excluded from opportunities for better livelihoods. The
white dot in the dark region represents an area of hope, arising from the talents and
aspirations of the poor and the efforts of BASIX to promote livelihoods.
The white part is the economically more prosperous world, but colourless, and it
can benefit from the vibrancy and talents of the dark blue part. The lines represent
BASIX attempts to establish linkages between the two zones. These linkages
include capital, human resources, technology, markets, institutions and policies.
The environment is represented by the circular boundary, which also depicts the
Earth. Anything that we do to enhance prosperity (Samruddhi), has to be
sustainable for both zones together.
The motto, Equity for Equity means that BASIX attempts to use capital
(financial, human, social and natural capital) to work towards bringing equality of
opportunity and social justice in society, globally.
To promote sustainable livelihoods among the rural poor and the rural women
through the provision of financial services and technical assistance in an integrated

manner and to strive to achieve a competitive rate of return to its investors so as to
be able to access mainstream capital and human resources on a continuous basis.

Conclusion
The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can rightfully be to
the strategic advantage of Micro Finance Institutions. Innovations in ICT have
transformed traditional approaches to microfinance, facilitating growth and
reducing cost. Some of the players have already started getting the benefit by using
Management Information System and similar IT solutions, while the majority of
the MFIs have yet to realize the importance of its use to achieve outreach and
sustainability.
Constraints:
Microfinance operations are unique and complex, compared to commercial, retail
banking. There are following constraints that MFIs and here BASIX face in
implementing MIS:
The Microfinance sector is still evolving and lacks standardization in its
procedures, methodologies, customer characteristics, type of transactions and
reporting.
There is no of-the-shelf software available that can address the requirements of
every MFI.
Those MIS that are available are complex and costly for adoption.
