Exide has developed new and technologically advanced products, innovative services and systems that will provide superior performance and life to our customers and Australian & New Zealand motorists.
Our company engineers and research centre is at the forefront of new technology and they dynamically consider, test and verify the vast range of opportunities in new product design. The traditional lead acid battery technology remains the foundation of most batteries, and pound for pound is the most proven reliable and cost effective power source. Battery innovation is fundamentally based on enhancements which are the main focus of our R&D departments around the world. Additives such as Tin, Silver,
carbon, Lithion-ion, Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM) separators and other paste additives are all advancements that Exide have considered and incorporated where there are proven benefits.
Exide have recently introduced two of these latest technologies into its range. Ap9 is a Tin alloy additive to the battery grids which delivers improved mechanical properties, lowers resistance to charge acceptance and reduces grid corrosion rates. Additionally, we have enhanced our plate active material formulation, by including seed crystals to dramatically improve plate adhesion & corrosion resistance we call this 2xT and use it in our Extreme range of products. Both of these powerful innovations deliver greater performance and longer application life.

All modern applications place heavier demand on the batterys performance than ever before. Exide understands these changes and have recently commissioned comprehensive car-parc research into genuine OEM specification requirements which has resulted in the design of Exides leading range, designed specifically for the Australian & New Zealand market.
For years now, the battery market has pointed to Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) as the determinant for assessing the quality of the battery. Whilst CCA is important, all key product specifications pertaining to battery performance are equally important. That is, Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), Reserve Capacity (RCm) and Amp Hours (AH). Exide has recently designed its specifications on a balanced approach respecting all of these battery characteristics.
Our Balanced Power approach is to achieve Longer Life which is the number one requirement of the purchaser. This has been backed by Exides innovative Extended Warranty system.

Warranty Adjudication accessing the consumers details:
Complete the normal warranty adjudication process detailed in Exides Fitment Guide or via our online Dealernet. Request the consumers warranty certificate and/or purchase receipt. Test the battery as per Exides requirements.
Genuine manufacturing defects represent less than 1% of batteries sold and the majority of batteries presented as potential warranties are suffering in-application faults with faulty charging systems, battery abuse or they are being used in incorrect applications. Be mindful too, that the older the battery, the less chance it has of being a manufacturing fault.
You will only need to access your Customer details if:
1. The customer cant provide a receipt but the original purchase has been registered
2. The term of the warranty is in question (which is highly unlikely),
3. You wish to check the odometer (very useful in checking Taxi & Commercial Fleet claims)
To search for the registered warranty:
Log into DEALERNET and enter your User Name & Password.
4. Use the search field to enter Vehicle Registration, Customer Name & post code, phone number and/or email address.
5. Review Customer stated purchase date and vehicle odometer information to establish if details and warranty period are correct.

Nation-wide Warranty
At Exide Batteries we are committed to total customer satisfaction by providing quality products and quality service at all times.
All Exide Batteries are covered by a free of charge replacement warranty that is backed by Australasias leading battery supplier.
Retain receipt for proof of purchase. Possible causes of battery failure that are not the result of faulty manufacture:
Incorrect or under-specified battery type fitted to car
Charge system problem (low or high voltage) creating an undercharge or overcharge situation. A low voltage will cause the battery to sulphate whilst a high voltage will literally cook the internal components of the battery.
Repeated deep discharge (heavy accessory loads, car phones, lighting, boat accessories, etc)
Prolonged storage of the car or very minimal use. A battery will generally sulphate and will never recover its full state of charge
Electrical faults (short and excessive loads)
Any battery modifications such as acid additives, lead terminal changes, or any other contaminates
Damaged battery caused by consumer or other in-car fault.
Some guiding tips to help your new Exide battery last even longer
AVOID SULPHATION Undercharging or leaving your vehicle in an unused state for any length of time, will harm your battery and void your warranty. A flat or sulphated battery is not considered to be a manufacturing fault.
REGULARLY CHECK ELECTROLYTE LEVELS (if applicable) Remove vent caps and check electrolyte levels monthly. Fill with distilled water to just above the separators and plates. Mop up any spills.
BATTERY MAINTENANCE As part of your normal program have your battery charged at every vehicle service. This will prevent the battery operating in an uncharged state due to parasitic loads and vehicle sitting unused for extended periods.
HAVE YOUR ENGINE SERVICED REGULARLY Poor engine condition can overload the battery and reduce its life.
LOOK FOR FAILING BATTERY SIGNALS Engine turning over slowly or lights dimming noticeably on starting means you should have your battery checked and recharged or replaced if necessary. Also check electrics and fan belt.
KEEP YOUR BATTERY CLEAN Use warm soapy water and dry off well. Ensure battery terminals are cleaned at every vehicle service.
MINIMISE HEAVY DRAINING When your battery is drained by leaving lights or accessories on, revive it with a slow recharge. Install a dual battery system if you frequently need to use accessories with high power demands.
CHECK YOUR VEHICLES CHARGE RATE Under and over-charging will reduce battery life, so have the charge rate checked at every major service.
KEEP YOUR BATTERY SECURELY FASTENED Vibration can damage battery plates, so make sure your battery is firmly held by a suitable hold down device. Inspect battery terminals regularly as loose terminals can cause breakdowns.

Open Circuit Voltage Check (OCV) Use DC mode on multimeter 0.01 volt resolution. Six cells are connected in series at 2.1Volts
per cell giving combined OCV of 12.6. Batteries cannot be checked accurately
less than 12 hours after charge. Charged batteries should be 12.60 to 12.90 OCV. OCV of less than 12.20 indicates low state of charge < 50%. OCV is linked to specific gravity e.g. 12.60 OCV = 1.260S.G.
Specific Gravity Check (S.G.) S.G indicates individual cell state of charge. Large variations in S.G can indicate faulty a cell. S.G can be misleading when recharged at low voltage.
Stratification can occur giving a lower S.G. To overcome this charge at higher current
(3 to 5 amps up to four hours)
Fault Examples
4. No cranking performance low OCV OCV 10.65 Checked S.G on all six cells Cell #1 1.270 Cell #2 1.270 Cell #3 1.270 Cell #4 1.270 Cell #5 1.270 Cell #6 1.270
ObservationVery low OCV but S.G good but unable to hold current load
Explanation Internal break resulting in open
circuit under load
1. Unable to start vehicle OCV 10.51 Checked S.G on all six cells Cell #1 1.265 Cell #2 1.260 Cell #3 1.105 Cell #4 1.265 Cell #5 1.265 Cell #6 1.260
ObservationLow OCV & Low S.G on Cell #4
Explanation Intern This battery has a dead
cell #3
Likely cause would be a manufacture fault, short between positive & negative plates al break resulting in open circuit under load
2. Unable to start vehicle OCV 12.15 Checked S.G on all six cells Cell #1 1.120 Cell #2 1.120 Cell #3 1.125 Cell #4 1.120 Cell #5 1.120 Cell #6 1.125
ObservationLow S.G & Low OCV is a good indication of low state of charge. The battery should recover with a full recharge.
Explanation Sulphated batteries give
similar readings to example #2 but have heavy sulphation.
This is due to dense lead sulphate which may not be reversible with recharge.
Batteries which have stood discharged for a few days will start to suffer from sulphation.
After weeks of being discharged they may not recover to serviceable condition.
Bulging end walls are an indication of severe sulphation developed over months causing irreversible plate damage.
3. Poor cranking performance OCV 12.65 Checked S.G on all six cells Cell #1 1.250 Cell #2 1.270 Cell #3 1.240 Cell #4 1.275 Cell #5 1.265 Cell #6 1.265
ObservationA good OCV & and reasonable S.G but with larger variations & brown sediment visible in the hydrometer is an indication of active material loss.
Explanation An indication the battery has
been over worked or is worn out. A high rate discharge test will confirm.
Check if it is from a high mileage application or heavy cycle use. ( taxi or heavy commercial use )

How long will my battery last? This will depend on usage and climate. On average it will generally last approximately three to four years or 100,000 km.
When should batteries be replaced? As soon as it shows any signs of reduced cranking performance.
For reliable starting a guide is four years or 100,000 km.
What happens as batteries wear out?Service wear causes mechanical breakdown of all internal components.
Positive grids corrode and active material sheds from grid reducing capacity.
Negative active material shrinks and sheds from grid reducing cranking performance.
Separators oxidise and develop cracks and holes which can result in plate shorts.
Can battery additives be used to extend battery life?Additives cannot restore battery performance or extend service life.
Additives can actually introduce impurities which can cause damage.
Should extra acid be added to old batteries to improve performance? No, there will only be a short term gain, the extra acid will actually shorten plate life.
How long should batteries be stored unused?Batteries start service life when acid is added in manufacturing process even with regular boost charging batteries will age and internals will be effected by sulphuric acid and cell reactions, effectively reducing service life.
Batteries are best put into service before three months from the manufacture charge date.
Batteries can still remain serviceable if stored up to 12 months with boosting charging but service life will be impacted.
How long can dry charged batteries be stored before activating?Ideally one year but they will last longer if stored in a cool dry environment and the temporary seal is not broken.
How long can I leave my battery discharged?Best to recharge immediately after discharge use but within 24 hours is acceptable.
Deep cycle batteries should not be discharged more than 50% of the 20 hour capacity.

InstallationA replacement battery may vary from the original factory fitted battery. In most cases the replacement battery can be installed without any modification or adjustment. However, it is advisable to always check the replacement battery against the existing one to ensure that size, hold down, terminal configuration, cranking capacity and bonnet clearance are suitable for the application.
Check bonnet clearance before installing battery.
Locate positive terminal and mark plus (+) on the cable. Remove the negative cable first.
Remove the positive terminal and battery hold down.
Inspect the tray for corrosion. If necessary, clean using baking soda and water. Rinse with clean water.
Place the new battery in the tray and ensure the battery is level and the terminal posts are in the same position as the old battery.
Replace the hold down and ensure battery is secure.
Replace the positive terminal and tighten.
Replace the negative terminal and tighten. The negative terminal should always be replaced last.
Never over tighten or hammer terminal onto the battery as this can damage the posts.
SafetyAlways use care when transporting or installing batteries.
Batteries are heavy. Lift carefully and do not place on unstable surface.
Batteries contain acid. Lift carefully and do not tilt. Keep battery upright at all times. Keep acid away from clothing and skin. If contact occurs, flush with large amounts of water. If acid contacts eyes - seek medical attention immediately.
Batteries generate explosive gases. Keep naked flames and cigarettes away and ensure adequate ventilation is available when charging a battery.
Keep metal objects away from terminals.
ChargingBefore charging begins, provide plenty of ventilation and ensure safety goggles and a face shield are worn. Sparks from loose connections or metal tools making contact between the terminals or the ungrounded terminal and nearby grounded metal parts can also be hazardous. Do not remove the vent caps and do not charge the battery unless you are thoroughly familiar with the step-by-step procedure of recharging a battery. Check the electrolyte levels, then place a wet cloth over the battery top and vent caps. Turn the charge rate switch and timer to the OFF position before connecting the leads to the battery.
Connect the charger leads to the battery terminals, red positive (+) lead to positive terminal and black negative (-) lead to the negative terminal. Rock the charger lead clamps to make certain a good connection has been made. Set the electric timer to the desired charging time.
Turn on the charger and slowly increase the charging rate until the desired ampere value is reached. Do not charge in the red zone. If the battery starts to emit smoke or dense vapour, shut off the charger and reject the battery. If violent gassing or spewing of electrolyte occurs, reduce or temporarily halt the charging.
Never touch the charger leads when the charger is ON. This could break a connection at the battery terminal and create a spark which could ignite the explosive gases in the battery. Never break a live circuit at the battery terminals for the same reason. Always turn the charger OFF before removing a charger lead from the battery.
Your guide to battery rechargingThe following charging rates and times assume a fully discharged condition.
RESERVE CAPACITY (RC) Expressed in minutes and found on battery type label.
SLOW CHARGE
Up to 75 mins 15 hrs @ 3 amps
75 mins-130 mins 21 hrs @ 4 amps
130 mins-180 mins 22 hrs @ 5 amps
180 mins-250 mins 23 hrs @ 6 amps
Above 250 mins 24 hrs @ 10 amps
Many chargers available will automatically adjust to discharged condition and commence with a boost charge gradually changing to suit the battery condition and then switching off at the fully charged rate. If not an automatic switch mode charger use the above as a guide.

Exides brand advertising is the foundation of reseller brand support. For major retailers consisting of national networks, we tailor our destination based advertising campaigns primarily to promote our branded products with specific available at tags. Recent programs have focused on exposure at major events, as well as specific product campaigns in targeted magazines and at 4WD, marine and caravan & camping shows.
The Exide brand and retail phone numbers 1800 and 0800 are promoted through various avenues and are designed to capture consumers interest. All enquiry contacts are passed directly onto you. (conditions apply)
For our Independent customers, our focus is to identify your outlet as a battery destination through external signage displays, testing programs and through our online store locator (subject to criteria compliance).
Did you know 65%* of consumers do not know where to buy a battery? (*Reference/Source: OminCom 2005).
Exide is one of the most recognised battery brands in Australasia. This is due to:
National Ad campaigns Trade and Retail promotions, DealerNet referral system, Point of Sale and
merchandise materials Product Ambassadors program Innovative techniques eg
audio entry buzzers etc.
We also have channel specific branding programs such as:
Batterymart for auto electricians Marine dealer programs DIFM battery builder
Advise us about the channel you operate in, and we will identify the program best suited for you.
Market ResearchWe researched consumers to establish their purchasing behaviours with batteries and the product in general (source: MIG research 2014):
They will trust a credible expert in their advice if explained
They want value for money (life, Warranty & Price)
They want peace of mind, trusted brand, fit for purpose
They want simple, non-technical information to help them make their decision
This research has formed our Next Generation Battery Program

Promotional support
Exide has typically coupled its brand advertising with specific seasonal promotional campaigns. Our objective with the Exide brand is to deliver an informative message regarding application, with a concise product credibility story and most importantly, the best destination to purchase it.
McGrath Foundation InitiativeOver the past 2 years Exide in conjunction with The McGrath Foundation launched a dedicated pink battery campaign. For every battery sold Exide donated a unit contribution to the Foundation in support of the breast care cancer network.
Our promotional support continues throughout the year
