Bedfont & Feltham v Cove Cherry Red Records Combined Counties Football League, Division One Saturday 17th November 2018 – Kick-Off: 3.00pm Volume 6, Issue 13

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Orchard.

This afternoon, we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Cove Football Club; and our three match officials for today’s Combined Counties Football League Division One fixture. We trust that you all enjoy the match and have a safe journey home afterwards.

Last week saw us actually play on Friday night in the end. We played Kensington Borough in the league whereas we were actually due to have been playing them away on Saturday. They ground share with Leatherhead who had a fixture change and our home fixture was brought forward from February. Despite the wet and windy conditions, we won 4-0 which was a great improvement from the loss at Tooting Bec. Michael Capon scored two and Farhad Mahboudi and Reece Gairy scored our others.

We have already played Cove this season. We visited them in September and came away 4-2 winners. Michael Capon scored two goals that day with Ross and Paul Nunn scoring the other two. They are currently at the foot of the table. Their last match saw them lose 0-2 to Sheerwater at home. They were due to play Bagshot last weekend but the heavy rain put paid to their match.

We’re at home to Park View from the Spartan South Midlands League on Tuesday evening in the Middlesex Premier Cup; then we visit Farnham Town next Saturday back in the league.

Our fixture list can be found further inside today’s programme and on our website.

Two other points to mention: Firstly, AC London FC have been removed from the league following the conclusion of the club’s FA appeal relating to member clubs originally voting AC London out of our league at the AGM.

Secondly, we were sad to hear that Alan Turvey, the President of the Isthmian League sadly passed away earlier in the week. Feltham FC were members of the Isthmian League from 1977-1995 and remember him well.

Enjoy the match and see you again soon. Rob – editor.

From Bedfont & Feltham FC Manager Adam Bessent:

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Orchard. I hope our match officials and all associated with Cove enjoy their short stay with us.

Last Friday night was the perfect response to our first league defeat of the season. In terrible conditions, we eventually ran out 4-0 winners against an improved Kensington Boro. We were not at our best in the first half, confidence possibly low after the Tooting result we didn't show a lot of courage in possession and the only bright spark of the first 45 was Farhad's superb strike. After some honest and frank discussion during the half time break, the boys sprung into life in the second half and showed glimpses of what they're capable of. Another brace for Michael and one for Reece, returning to the squad, sealed the 3 points.

No time for complacency or looking at league positions today, if you have an off day at this level you will get punished. We will be going for another 3 important points. I hope you enjoy the game, thank you for your support.

Adam

By Alex Narey It is now almost three years to the day since, on a cold and wet Saturday afternoon at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium, Jamie Vardy latched onto a Christian Fuchs through-ball before slotting a powerful low drive past Manchester United’s David de Gea. The significance of the goal, which saw Vardy break Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of scoring in ten consecutive Premier League matches, was clear evidence of a footballer at the height of his powers. Vardy’s rise from such humble Non-League beginnings to the bright lights of the Premier League has been well documented. From Stocksbridge Park Steels, via FC Halifax and Fleetwood Town - England recognition would follow off the back of his blazing run with Leicester City. Here was the ‘poster boy’ for what Non-League football could deliver. So much so, in fact, that scouts up and down the country are now looking for that next gem; a player with a price tag that wouldn’t even be picked up on most Premier League clubs’ balance sheets. But while the new wave of Non-League stars continue to take their places in the higher leagues and beyond – former Kettering striker Calum Wilson’s call-up to the England squad being the latest example of such – the lack of managers being given their chance remains a cause of major frustration. Scratch the surface and you can see some reasoning: if a club purchases a player for such a nominal fee - even the £1 million Leicester City paid Fleetwood Town for Vardy’s services in 2012 - there is so much to gain and so little to lose. But taking a manager from the lower leagues, who is expected to make a team gel and manage players’ egos, well that’s a different challenge. And, where such appointments are concerned, chairmen and board members don’t want any egg on their faces. That said, if Football League clubs could have a window into the work and lives of many Non-League managers, they would see so many astute footballing brains that are complemented with the key ingredient needed for success: hard work. Yet still our managers are being ignored, and if they are given a chance, it is invariably with a club that is swimming against the tide. Paul Hurst’s recent ill-fated stint at Ipswich is a case in point. Despite a playing career where he chalked up to close to 500 games in the Football League with Rotherham United, Hurst cut his teeth in management in the lower leagues, working alongside Rob Scott at Ilkeston, Boston and Grimsby before taking the job with the Mariners on a full-time basis. He then moved to Shrewsbury before Ipswich came calling last May. With one of the lowest budgets in the Championship in a division that has become, pound for pound, arguably the toughest in Europe, the task at Portman Road was never going to be an easy one. It proved beyond Hurst, and now instead of celebrating the talents of a man who has gone from the Conference to the Championship in the space of two years, we are left scratching our heads as to when the next bright light from Non-League will be given the chance to shine. Managers deserve greater support and patience to progress their careers. Non-League football has been recognised as the perfect breeding ground for players who develop the right attitudes for the task ahead, but those players are learning from some of the game’s most aspiring young managers. Like Vardy, there are some golden nuggets out there…

History of Cove FC Cove Football Club was formed in 1897 by a group of local friends playing on a field behind their favourite Public House. Later moving to a more central location, Cove Green became their home until 1973, when they moved to their present ground at the Oak Farm Stadium. Playing their football in The Surrey Leagues, Cove enjoyed success for many years, winning more than their fair share of silverware including the League Championship 3 years in succession and a double in that period. In 1973, the club decided to upgrade and were accepted into the Hampshire Leagues, but had to leave 'The Green' for safety reasons and play at Oak Farm. The Division 4 Championship was won at the first attempt, and the Division 3 title followed 2 years later. After a couple of seasons, Cove finished Runners-Up in Division 2, but decided to withdraw from this league due to the time incurred travelling to away matches at Portsmouth or Southampton. This was before the M3 motorway was built and all roads were A and B types. They returned to the more local Combined Counties League in 1980 and won the League Cup beating close neighbours and rivals Ash United. Since moving into their new home, many changes have taken place at Oak Farm with the installation of floodlights a concrete perimeter wall and stand in their quest to host senior non-league football. These achievements are the more remarkable with Farnborough Town (then Conference League) and Aldershot Town (then Football League) just a couple of miles down the road. In 1990, Cove was given the opportunity to join the Vauxhall League (now Ryman League) after finishing third. New manager ‘Chick’ Botley assembled a squad strong enough to finish a respectable fourth in their first season. Two more successful seasons followed narrowly missing out on promotion, one being a final day defeat by the new Aldershot Town. Due to the ever spiralling cost of football at this level, Cove were forced to withdraw from their league and after 3 unsuccessful attempts to join the Wessex League, had to revert back into The Combined Counties League, where they remained with little success. In 2009, the club appointed Koo Dumbuya as manager and a member of the Steve Beeks double winning team and well known around the area. Having played professional football for Aldershot and Brentford, the club decided his playing experience and knowledge could be invaluable and in his first season, Cove won the Southern Combination Cup with a 4-0 victory over Chessington and Hook. In Season 2010-11, Cove won the Combined Counties League Cup with a 2-0 win over Bedfont, followed by a victory over Farnborough Town in the semi-final of the Aldershot Senior Cup before losing to Fleet Town in the final. In 2011 manager Koo Dumbuya left the club after 4 years as player/manager to take up a post at Chertsey Town, leaving a big hole to fill as his knowledge of local football was immense. During season 2012-13 following some poor performances, the club employed an ex-player Anthony Millerick who brought instant success with the winning of the Aldershot Senior Cup and a 3-0 victory over Fleet Spurs, also finishing 3rd in the League, our highest position for many a year. 2013-2014 was another successful season finishing 5th after a run of 22 games, 19 wins and 1 defeat and 2 draws. Cove thrived in 2014-2015 as well sitting on top of the league for half the season, but unable to go for promotion due to the cost of ground improvements and travel, saw a considerable dip in form, leaving Cove with a fifth place finish and a mass exodus of management and players. With hindsight, a poor decision by the committee at the time.

History of Cove FC – continued A complete change of personnel followed with the appointment of Dave Matthews as manager, following his success as a Youth Team coach. He accepted the challenge of building a new team capable of retaining their position in the Premier Division. However our young team of hopefuls were unable to compete at this level and after some poor results found ourselves at the foot of the table many points adrift of safety. Following Dave’s resignation at Christmas, new manager Paul Duncan set about trying to save our Premier status, but despite some improved performances the points difference right at the bottom was too much and hence we found ourselves relegated to the CCFL Division One. This is the first time in the clubs 120 year history that Cove had to face up to relegation. In the summer of 2016 Cove desperately needed a change; both in personnel responsible for the club overall and football strategy going forward. It also needed a huge amount of work to the clubhouse and grounds. The whole place needed an overhaul. Those responsible for the last 15 years had let it go and driven it into the ground. Cove FC had to survive. The result was several resignations from the old committee and new ideas and aspirations from many in the Youth setup and new Chairman Salvatore Diprima saw the start of a new era. The club structure has changed and focus was on building a new senior side ably supported by new Under 18 and Reserve sides. The future is to have a thriving family club including all 23 plus youth teams and parents, walking football and local sponsors. In the meantime the football management efforts of Paul Duncan and Salv Diprima were not good enough and Cove avoided relegation from CCFL due to another club leaving. A must needed reprieve but by now Paul Duncan had left and Salv took the Manager role. Season 2017-18 started well enough but by Christmas Salvatore has been unsuccessful trying to build a new team and improve our football standard. Cove FC had been in the bottom three for most of the season, therefore he was sacked as first team manager in February 2018. Management was been passed to his assistant Josh Taylor for the remainder of the season. Salvatore immediately resigned as Chairman and left the club. Josh has been appointed First Team Manager for 2018 -19 after his successful spell in charge for the last 12 games of 2017-18 and lifting Cove off the bottom of the league and ensuring we stayed in CCL div 1. A special mention to Ron Brown, who in 1990 received an F.A. Award for 50 years’ service to Cove FC, including 35 years as secretary. Ron retired in 1982 passing the reins to his son Graham who until just recently remained in the job. Sadly Ron passed away in 2009 after 70 years’ service including 20 years as Club President. Awards by Hampshire FA: Frank Kenton and Graham Brown - 25 years’ service.

This Day in Football History:

17 November 1989 They Really Don't Like Each Other

On 17 November 1989, Egypt met Algeria at Cairo Stadium to decide who would advance to the 1990 World Cup. The hosts won, 1-0, but the match is best remembered for the ensuing violence, earning it the nickname "the Hate Match." The two sides had a long history of dislike, dating back to the 1950s when Egypt refused to play matches intended to support Algerian independence. By the 1970s and '80s, brawls had become a staple of their matches. By 1989, Algeria were considered the better team, having gone to the two previous World Cups and finishing in third place at the 1988 African Cup of Nations. In order to book their ticket to the 1990 World Cup, they needed only a point against Egypt, who had not qualified for the World Cup since 1934. With a capacity of 100,000, Cairo Stadium was close to packed a full 4 hours before kick-off. The home supporters were rewarded with a 4th-minute goal from Al-Ahly striker Hossam Hassan (pictured), which turned out to be the matchwinner. After the final whistle, Algeria's players, coaches, and officials surrounded the referee, then began throwing plants and dirt into the stands. At a post-match reception, Algerian midfielder Lakhdar Belloumi struck the Egyptian team doctor, blinding him in one eye. On 18 November 2009, the two teams met again in a World Cup qualification playoff, with Algeria winning 1-0 as riots and violence again dominated the post-match reports.

The Ball is Round The Game Back Then, The Demise Of The Tackle The Amber Scribe, Tony Madden Writes The art of tackling was something many of us held as dear in the game as we did the skills of ‘The Fox in the Box’; for every Jimmy Greaves or Denis Law there was a Norman Hunter or a Nobby Stiles. No team tried to play without a hard man, no team would ever dare. The game back in pre Premier League and Champions League loved both the hero and the villain and understood the respective merits of each. Not so today. This year sadly saw the passing of the wonderful Dave Mackay the former Spurs and Scotland Captain. A man who helped Spurs to their 1960/61 double and who even more famously threatened to throw Billy Bremner over the White Hart Lane Stand for an over the top tackle that could have broken his only recently mended leg! Dave was no stranger to a hard tackle but on that occasion saw his opponent as a dirty little git rather than a skilled artisan of the ‘proper hard tackle’! Players like Dave Mackay, Peter Storey or Vinnie Jones would never finish a game these days, indeed it’s most unlikely they’d even make the team sheet such would be their astronomically high risk assessment score! These days the leaders of the modern day game such as Michel Platini advocate for contact free football and suggest we will all enjoy the game more for it? Absolute nonsense and I wonder if a quick poll went on around the stand today if we’d find much support for Michel’s view. I doubt it very much. I am unashamedly a fan of the tackling game. I loved the players who could tackle and I loved those who could avoid the tackle. Anyone who ever saw the famous clip of Chopper Harris of Chelsea trying to cut George Best in half as he ran from his own half to score for Manchester United will know what I mean. Chopper knew he had to stop him, but George knew it as well and he wasn’t for backing out. He met him head on, hurdled the thigh high challenge and went past him moving on to the penalty area where he went around the sprawling Peter Bonetti and plonked it in the Chelsea net. It remains to this day a thing of beauty. Chopper was more than ready to take a booking or worse for the team, and George saying ‘come on my son try it’! If the modern day equivalent was Christiano Ronaldo running towards the same Chopper Harris what would be the result? A diving and rolling CR screaming in false pain, and a Manchester United free kick half way up the pitch. I know what spectacle I want to watch. We need to see more physical contact not less and football is a lesser product now it’s been so denied of this skill. Worse still I’d further argue it’s actually now created a risk, as serious injuries are occurring not because players are dirty but because they aren’t used to coping with the art of the tackle. It’s refreshing when watching non-league football that tackling remains a more fundamental part of the game and that as a consequence the diving and rolling around are much less common. Again go around the stand on any day in any ground and ask the fans what they hate and I guarantee that diving and lack of tackling will be very close to the top objection to the modern product. Next issue I will be arguing to bring back the long lank greasy hair styles of the seventies, plain black football boots, scarves tied around the wrist and the two pint paper beer cups. Tony Madden.

Bedfont & Feltham FC History: Bedfont & Feltham Football Club was founded in May 2012 following the amalgamation of Feltham FC and Bedfont Football and Social Club, taking Feltham's place in Division One of the Combined Counties Football League. Feltham had already entered the 2012–13 FA Vase under their own name so the club played as Feltham FC until the start of the 2013–14 season. Two Sunday sides played in the West Middlesex Sunday Football League under the Bedfont & Feltham name; one finishing second in Division One and the other winning Division Two. The Yellows' first two seasons saw them finish in a respectable fifth place in the Division One table having been early front-runners. They reached the First Round Proper of the FA Vase in 2013-14 and also won the Middlesex Premier Cup. The club became eligible to compete in the FA Cup for the first time in 2014-15, and reached the First Round Qualifying. The same season also saw the club win the Division One Challenge Cup and become runners-up in the Southern Combination Challenge Cup competition. For season 2015-16, the club restructured its squad and Youth set-up. The club started strongly and for the second time in its short history made the First Round Qualifying in the FA Cup and the FA Vase competitions. This season saw the Yellows finish as runners-up in Division One, earning promotion to the Premier Division of the Combined Counties Football League. The club also reached the final of the RPM Records Division One Challenge Cup for the second consecutive season. The Premier Division experience in 2016-17 started tough with a 2-9 home defeat to Epsom & Ewell on the opening day of the season. This seemed to pave the way for the

club’s worst season since its formation: Finishing second from bottom in the Combined Counties Football League’s Premier Division. This resulted in relegation back to Division One. The club was knocked out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle and of the FA Vase at the second. On a brighter note, they reached the semi-finals of the Southern Combination Challenge Cup and the quarter-finals of the Middlesex FA Senior Charity Cup having unceremoniously exited all other cup competitions in earlier rounds. This prompted the club to appoint Garry Haylock as Manager in late April 2017. Life back in Division One in season 2017-18 started very poorly and in consequence, Garry Haylock departed in October 2017 to be replaced by Dan Huxley. The poor run experienced in 2016-17 continued, with the club exiting the FA Cup and FA Vase competitions in the opening rounds. The club reached the Quarter-Finals of the Middlesex Premier Cup; Third Round of the Division One Challenge Cup; Second Round of the Middlesex Charity Cup and Second Round of the Southern Combination Challenge Cup. The squad saw a number of changes throughout the season and found it difficult to bond. This resulted in a bottom four finish. Dan Huxley announced his resignation at the end of the season. The club quickly appointed former Staines Lammas manager Adam Bessent. He will attempt to arrest the mediocrity that has dogged the club since relegation two seasons ago. The Club has retained the FA Charter Standard and is now in its sixth season. The current set-up sees a revived Sunday side and Youth teams from Under 7s to Under 10s.

Introducing Sideburn Bob - The People's Champion

Since 1974 #sideburnbob has been gracing Non-League football programmes either as a front

cover or inside a programme for various advertising, as far as I am aware he was first spotted

in the 1974 Derby County  Ram Boutique advert and thereafter in other various League Club

programmes first appearing on the 1976 Kilmarnock programme as a front cover, from there on

in fronting 100s of non-league programmes with his glory years being 1980's & 90s.

The mystery of exactly where Bob came from continues. Tony Williams who many of you will

know from his Non-League publications wrote in the non league grounds of Great Britain that

he had first spotted Bob in a 1950s football magazine and had pasted him into a scrapbook.

Doubt remains on this siting as nothing was ever spotted again for over 20 years until the Ram

Boutique advert. Popular suggestion is he is in fact clipart which is more plausible as Bob looks

like a 70s character and famous footballer Malcolm MacDonald with his ever present partner

looking like Rodney Bewes from the Likely Lads which older readers will have fond memories

of. So, why do I love this character? Well simply because it brings back memories of

programmes collected throughout the years. He is  an iconic figure for me - some of my first

memories of attending games within Non-League.

Throughout the 2017-18 season, there were many clubs surprisingly interested in issuing

programmes with the iconic image either on the front cover or within the programme itself.

Prolific issuers were Portland United, Sholing Sports and Bedfont & Feltham and big thanks

goes to those 3 programme editors - and of course, to all the other editors that issued.

#sideburnbob the People's Champion will continue to be an iconic figure for me and the search

is on for his history and collecting programmes.
