Behemoth by name and by nature -
but not by sales price - Behemoth
is now among that most exclusive
of clubs for racehorses as a Group
1 winner after he scored his first success at
the highest level in yesterday’s Magic Millions
Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield.
Long touted as a Group 1 winner in the
making, a view only solidified by his narrow
defeat in The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) as a
three-year-old at just his seventh start, the
David Jolly-trained Behemoth (5 g All Too Hard -
Penny Banger by Zedrich) - who was purchased
for $6,000 as a yearling - entered the Memsie
Stakes off a dominant first-up win in the Spring
Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Morphettville.
Sent out as $3.30 favourite, Behemoth
looked poised to justify that support throughout
after he was given a soft run by Craig Williams
from gate two.
Landing in a handy spot behind a
solid tempo set by Begood Toya Mother
(Myboycharlie) and the pressing Streets Of
Avalon (Magnus), the hulking bay assuaged pre-
race concerns as he never appeared cluttered
for room at any point. Continued on page 2>>

Tracking up sweetly on the home turn
as Streets Of Avalon wilted under pressure, Williams was able to force off
the fence with ease early in the straight and from there it was simply a
question of margin.
The answer was a length and a half, holding off the late-charging
Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Mr Quickie (Shamus Award),
who made a pleasing return.
Glenfiddich (Fastnet Rock), the first three-year-old to contest the
Memsie in more than a generation, ran a strong third two and a quarter
lengths from the winner in what marked the return of 53-time Group
1-winning trainer Peter Moody to the big leagues.
"When he landed in the right spot I thought he'd be hard to beat,"
said Jolly, who was forced to watch from Morphettville in Adelaide due to
Covid-19 border restrictions. "When we drew inside some people thought
that wasn't a good thing but I was happy. He was able to take a spot and
stretch out.
"I said to Craig to use him from the gate, be a little aggressive. It worked
out so well. I'd have loved to have been there."
Honest charges Cascadian (New Approach) and So Si Bon (So You
Think) performed solidly for fourth and fifth respectively, while two-time
Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Harlem (Champs Elysees) worked
home well enough for a never-nearer seventh.
However, the spring campaigns of All-Star Mile (1600m) winners
Mystic Journey (Needs Further) and Regal Power (Pierro) appear up in
the air after they finished tenth and 12th respectively.
Regal Power’s stablemate Arcadia Queen (Pierro) also remains under
a cloud after she was scratched from the Memsie due to hoof issues, while
P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) victor Savatiano (Street Cry) was a late
withdrawal after she reared up in the tie-up stalls.
In the end, though, all honours were with Behemoth, who has, this
preparation, furnished into the elite-level racehorse he long promised to
be.
It has been a case of slowly, slowly, for Jolly as he has nurtured
Behemoth along: a city winner in both Adelaide and Melbourne in his
second preparation, a Group 1 runner-up in his third campaign, a stakes
winner in his first month as a four-year-old and a solid Group performer
by the time he reached the Adelaide features in May.
This was evident in his game fourth in the inaugural $7.5 million
Golden Eagle Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill last year, finishing in front of
highly-touted horses like Arcadia Queen, Beat Le Bon (Wootton Bassett),
Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt) and Brutal (O’Reilly), as well as
filling the same spot in this year’s The Goodwood.
It was a fitting reward for Jolly as he picked up his first Group 1 win
in 18 years; his last came in The Goodwood with Zip Zip Aray (Bellotto)
in 2002.
“It’s been a long time since my last Group 1 win in The Goodwood,”
Jolly reminisced, “but I’ve had a few near misses in Adelaide and
Melbourne.”
After yesterday’s win, Behemoth’s prize-money haul now sits at
$1,324,810, having won six of his 16 starts and recorded a further four
seconds.
That pales in comparison to his purchase price as a yearling, when the
Peter and Karen Morley-owned Grand Syndicates paid just $6,000 for him
at the 2017 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale - he has earned more
than 220 times that to date.
That $6,000 purchase came less than a year after he sold for $120,000
from the Tyreel Stud draft at the 2016 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale
Platinum Session.

Linda Monds recalled of Behemoth
as a foal: “I loved him, he was full of character, he really had such a big
personality. He was such a giant weanling, that’s why we put him through
the Great Southern Sale early on and while he kept growing after that, boy
can he run.
“He was absolutely one of the biggest weanlings we’d had but that
said, we’d had big before so it just proves again that Group 1 winners can
come in all shapes and sizes.’’
Not much had changed by the time he came into Grand Syndicates’
ownership a year later, according to racing manager Sam Lyons.
"He was very big, but not really in proportion body-wise and had a
very interesting big boofhead,” Lyons told Racing.com earlier this week.
"That's why he hasn't been over raced and we've allowed him time to grow
into himself.”
Yesterday, Lyons added: "It's a big thrill. David has been so patient
with him. People have dropped off him along the way too. He just needed
time."
Behemoth is the second Group 1 winner for Black Caviar’s half-brother
All Too Hard (Casino Prince), having produced his first - Australian
Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) conqueror Alligator Blood - earlier this year.
Bred by Wallings Bloodstock, the breeding outfit of Tyreel Stud’s Linda
and Laurence Monds, Behemoth is the fourth of five foals for the now-
deceased mare Penny Banger (Zedrich).
While Penny Banger won the Schweppervescence Sprint (Listed,
1000m) for juveniles at Flemington in 2008 and was quite precocious, she
was a half-sister to Master Minx (Surtee), who won the Aquanita Stakes
(Listed, 1650m) and was placed in both the WATC Derby (Gr 1, 2400m)
and the Perth Cup (Gr 2, 3200m).
While Behemoth is yet to race beyond 1500 metres and holds
favouritism for the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield next
month, his stamina could potentially be tested at a mile next time out in
the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), a race that in turn could also lead
to a Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) berth.
He has also shortened into equal favouritism for the Toorak Handicap
(Gr 1, 1600m) alongside Buffalo River (Noble Mission) and Showmanship
(Showcasing).
For now, Jolly is not ruling anything out, except for the fact that Behemoth
is likely to head back to the trainer’s Goolwa base for the time being.
“We’ll bring him home and talk about where we go,” he said. “He
does have an entry for the Cox Plate but we’re not sure whether to take a
handicap or weight-for-age path with him. I’m very mindful that he was
more forward in his preparation than many of the others but it all worked
out so well today.”
San Domenico muddies Everest picture for Aquis
Aquis Farm faces a potential dilemma ahead of the world’s richest
turf race, The Everest (1200m), after Anders streeted his rivals in the San
Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill yesterday.
The Aquis Farm-owned Anders (3 c Not A Single Doubt - Madame
Andree by War Emblem) lived up to his first-up win in The Rosebud
(Listed, 1100m), leading every step of the way under James McDonald
to defeat the highly-touted Peltzer (So You Think) by three and a quarter
lengths with the Group 1-placed Mamaragan (Wandjina) a further three-
quarters of a length away in third.
The margin was not quite the same as the four and three-quarter
length gap Anders put on his rivals in The Rosebud, but this win added
further legitimacy to his credentials and suggests that he is among the top
three-year-olds with a month gone in the season.
It was his first win on top of the ground, the competition - on paper,
at least - appeared far stiffer and his time of 1:02.67 was only 0.16 seconds
outside the Rosehill 1100-metre track record set by Westicaro (Westbridge)
in February, 2007.

"He is very good. I was just saying to one
of the owners he is possibly our best so I was hoping he would do something
like that today," Maher said. "He couldn't be more impressive, could he?"
Aquis Farm holds a slot for the $15 million The Everest and Anders’
early-season form has potentially upset a fairly straightforward plan.
Among a bevy of other contenders for their slot is Golden Slipper
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), who leaps
out as the most logical selection given he is raced by Aquis, Phoenix
Thoroughbreds and Kia Ora Stud.
The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Farnan returns in The
Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) in two weeks, which looms as one of the
early races of the spring. Also slated to head there are San Domenico
placegetters Peltzer and Mamaragan, as well as Group 1 winners King’s
Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) and Rothfire (Rothesay).
However, early indications are that Anders is an unlikely runner on
September 12 with his next start likely to come in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1,
1000m) at Moonee Valley on September 25. Quarantine protocols are
likely to play a big role in determining whether he heads to Melbourne or
remains in Sydney to target The Everest.
The Moir winner has lined up in The Everest in each of its three
runnings to date, but the uncertainty surrounding Covid-19 protocols
and the transportation of horses between states makes it a more difficult
decision than would usually be the case.
"The Moir was always the target for him because of his speed and the
weight drop three-year-olds get. But you'd have to consider The Everest,
wouldn't you?" Maher said.
"I'm not going to rule anything out at the moment. But The Everest you
would definitely have to consider."
McDonald will ride Everest favourite Nature Strip (Nicconi) this
spring, but he believes that Anders can measure up. However, given the
nature of Anders’ wins this campaign, he could prove a nuisance to the
free-rolling Nature Strip should he secure a slot.
“The 1200 metres will be fine, but it depends if he has any pressure,”
McDonald said with a grin, suggesting that an Everest campaign would be
suitable but that he is well-suited in his current races.
Purchased by Aquis Farm and Ciaron Maher Racing for $670,000 at
the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Anders has now had
eight starts for four wins and two placings, amassing $290,615 in prize-
money.
He is one of three winners from three to race out of unraced mare
Madame Andree (War Emblem), making him a half-brother to Gosford
Guineas (Listed, 1200m) runner-up Battleground (Snitzel).
His second dam, Glamour Stock (Sunday Silence), is a half-sister to
champion Canadian colt Exciting Story (Diablo) as well as stakes winners
Strong Memory (End Sweep), Sweeping Story (End Sweep), and Diablo’s
Story (Diablo). ANZ

Ming Dynasty title to HolyfieldTwo races later, Maher, Eustace and Aquis Farm made it a clean sweep
of Rosehill’s three-year-old features yesterday when Holyfield took out the
Ming Dynasty Quality (Gr 3, 1400m).
Holyfield (3 c I Am Invincible - Hurtle Myrtle by Dane Shadow) had
won the T L Baillieu Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) at the course and distance in
March, producing a strong but dour effort, but had disappointed first-up
when coming unstuck on the Heavy 10 surface, finishing seven lengths
behind dominant winner North Pacific (Brazen Beau) in the Up And
Coming Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m).
Allowed to roll on the speed by Tim Clark, Holyfield led at a solid clip
but was well-rated by the rider, giving few of his rivals the opportunity to
run him down even under his 59-kilogram impost.
While challengers emerged, none ever looked a serious threat to
Holyfield as he continued to fend off all challengers in the run to the wire.
At the post, Holyfield had a margin of a length and a quarter over the
David Payne-trained Bazooka (Smart Missile) with favourite Overlord
(Sebring) working home from his usual backmarker position to finish
third, a further head away.
While both Anders and Holyfield led their respective races, Maher said
that they were completely different types, with the Caulfield Guineas (Gr
1, 1600m) and potentially even the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) on Holyfield’s
radar as he develops into a middle-distance type.
"I always thought the Guineas would be a good race for him," Maher
said. “We nommed him for the Cox Plate. That might be getting well ahead
of myself but we will see how he runs in the Guineas because I did think
he would run a bit further.
"Tim rode him very well. He was keen to get to the front and control
it. This horse was always going to improve into his three-year-old year
because he was quite a raw two-year-old."
A son of Group 1 winner Hurtle Myrtle (Dane Shadow), Holyfield is
her first stakes winner from four to race. Terwilliker (Pierro) and Snow
Sparkle (More Than Ready) have also emerged victorious, while the twice-
raced Vamos Bebe (I Am Invincible) will attempt to make it four from four
for her dam when she steps out at Avondale on Wednesday.
Bred by Segenhoe Thoroughbreds, Holyfield was purchased by
Aquis Farm and Phoenix Thoroughbreds for $800,000 at last year’s Magic
Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
He has now won four of his seven starts and banked $226,865 in earnings.

Two for All Too HardBehemoth (5 g ex Penny Banger by Zedrich)
became the second Group 1 winner for
Vinery Stud’s All Too Hard (Casino Prince)
from four crops to race when he took out
yesterday’s Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at
Caulfield. Behemoth joined Alligator Blood
as a top-level winner for All Too Hard, the
half-brother to unbeaten champion sprinter
Black Caviar (Bel Esprit). All Too Hard is
standing at Vinery Stud for $27,500 (inc GST)
this season.
104 for SnitzelFour-time Australian champion sire Snitzel
(Redoute’s Choice) brought up his 104th
individual stakes winner yesterday when
Immortal Love (3 g ex Loveyamadly by Bel
Esprit) scored a thrilling last-stride victory in
the McNeil Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield.
Unbeaten in two starts as a juvenile, Immortal
Love swept home from near the rear to grab
Flying Award (Shamus Award) by a short half-
head with favourite Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa)
holding down third a further nose away,
having looked the winner for much of the
straight. Immortal Love is a homebred for
United Syndications’ Peter Creighton, who
sourced Immortal Love’s dam Loveyamadly
(Bel Esprit) for $60,000 at the 2010 Inglis
Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale and raced
her in his colours for a Listed win and a Group
3 second. She has produced three runners for
three winners, with Immortal Love joined
by last-start Gosford victor Classic Gaming
(Medaglia d’Oro) and city winner Bella Amore
(Snitzel). This season, Snitzel is standing for
$165,000 (inc GST) at Arrowfield Stud.
Immortal Love on Guineas pathTrainer Mick Price believes that Immortal Love
deserves his chance at the Caulfield Guineas
(Gr 1, 1600m) after he swept home from near
last to take out the McNeil Stakes yesterday. The
United Syndications-owned colt, who turned
heads with two wins as a two-year-old, showed
he could be a force to be reckoned with this
spring after defeating Anzac Day Stakes (Listed,
1400m) winner Flying Award and Blue Diamond
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) hero Tagaloa. “He did a
great job. You can add about three lengths to
his form if it does rain,” Price told Racing.com,
indicating that Immortal Love was likely to
tackle the Exford Plate (Listed, 1400m) and the
Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m) before
the Guineas itself. United Syndications will be
hoping for better success with Immortal Love
than they had with their last Caulfield Guineas
candidate, Fighting Harada (Fighting Sun), who
remains on a comeback trail almost two years
after he last raced.
40 for CongratsFormer American shuttle stallion Congrats
(A P Indy) recorded his 40th individual stakes
winner yesterday and his second Australian-
bred stakes winner overall when In Good
Health (5 m ex Fitness by More Than Ready)
caused a boilover in the Heatherlie Stakes
(Listed, 1700m). The Peter Moody-trained
In Good Health entered off a Benchmark 70
handicap win at Sandown and was accordingly
sent off at 60-1. Pushing forward from a wide
gate under Luke Nolen, she gradually improved
through the first half of the race to end up
outside leader Think We’re Due (So You Think)
by the 1000 metres. Ridden up on straightening,
she looked under siege from Sircconi (Nicconi)
on her outside and Game Keeper (Fastnet
Rock) between horses. However, she fought
on strongly to win by a half-head to Sircconi
with Game Keeper a long neck away in third.
Congrats stood four seasons at Vinery Stud,
from 2011 to 2014. He stood for US$10,000 at
WinStar Farm in Kentucky this year.
‘Sexual activities’ delayed for In Good HealthA trip to the breeding barn may be delayed
for In Good Health in favour of a campaign
targeting the Cups after she caused a major
upset in the Heatherlie Stakes yesterday.
Trainer Peter Moody and jockey Luke Nolen,
the partnership that dominated Melbourne
racing a decade ago, reunited for what was
Moody’s first stakes win since March, 2016
and a first black type success for Nolen since
the Melbourne Cup Carnival last year. Moody
said it was even more special that his first big
winner since his return to the training ranks
came in the Stuart Ramsey colours. “It is very
special,” he said. “The Ramsey family have
been one of my biggest supporters. They’ve
been there since day one. Special people. And
(part-owners) the Frith family are from Roma
in western Queensland - out in my country -
so it’s very gratifying. Just special to win with
those colours and ‘Trumby’ (Nolen) in them.
We thought she’d improve off the midweek
(run) but this was a big step. Stuey put a bit of
pressure on me during the week saying that
he’s got a stallion ready for her if I can’t get
her to keep performing, so she mightn’t be
into sexual activities. She’s progressive. She
might want to get to a mile-and-a-quarter
or a mile-and-a-half. He made me nom her
for the Cups and there were plenty of Cups
aspirants behind her. You never know.”

18 for AlamosaWellfield Lodge veteran Alamosa (O’Reilly)
brought up his 18th stakes winner yesterday
when Sky Punch (6 g ex Grey Swan by
Daylami) took out the Leon Macdonald
Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Morphettville. The
Michael Hickmott-trained Sky Punch, who was
purchased by Hickmott’s accountant Andrew
Maloney for $30,000 through the Inglis Digital
August 2019 auction, scored a first stakes win
when taking out the Leon Macdonald Stakes,
defeating Morvada (Mossman) by three-
quarters of a length with odds-on favourite
Dalasan (Dalakhani) a half-length away in
third. Sky Punch is the fourth named foal out of
the unplaced mare Grey Swan, a three-quarter
sister to Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Grey
Swallow (Daylami). Alamosa stands at Wellfield
Lodge once more this season, with his price
available on application.
Macdonald denied as Dalasan decked by PunchTrainer Leon Macdonald couldn’t secure the
Leon Macdonald Stakes in the first year it was
run in his honour, watching on as his charge
Dalasan could only manage a late-closing third
to Sky Punch. Dalasan was sent off $1.40 favourite
on the strength of his first-up second to Memsie
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) fancy Behemoth (All Too
Hard). And while Behemoth would win the
Memsie half an hour after the Leon Macdonald
Stakes, Dalasan brought punters unstuck with a
fair performance in the formerly-named Penny
Edition Stakes. Winning trainer Michael Hickmott
was thrilled to win a race named in honour of
his lifelong icon: “To win a race named after Mr
Macdonald, who’s been an idol of mine my whole
life, is just a huge honour. This horse, there’s new
owners, three of my best mates, all my family, I’m
just so thrilled.” While plans for Sky Punch are yet
to be determined, Dalasan is likely to head to the
Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington.
Second stakes win for Diamond EffortA tilt at Group 1 company is on the cards for
Diamond Effort (5 m Mossman - Relativity by
Geiger Counter) after the mare made it five
wins in a row by taking The Heath 1100 Stakes
(Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield yesterday. The Clint
McDonald-prepared Diamond Effort began
her picket fence in February by winning a
Benchmark 78 handicap over the same course
and distance as yesterday’s performance, while
she added a first stakes win in the Hareeba
Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Mornington in March.
McDonald is now eyeing off the Moir Stakes
(Gr 1, 1000m) at Moonee Valley after Diamond
Effort saw off Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) winner Lyre (Lonhro) by a head. “She’s
just a ripping mare,” he said. “We were really
confident coming into today. The wind was
probably the only dampener, but we thought it
was ‘chips in’ today. We’ll get her home and see
how she pulls up. We’ve got the Moir in mind
with her this time in. Obviously her rating will
go up again and we can go up to a Group 2 or
Group 1, especially if we can get her on a wet
track; she’s even better again.”
Rubisaki downed as Jewel prevailsPerth visitor Perfect Jewel (6 m Redoute’s
Choice - Star Encounter by Jeune) prevailed
at her first run outside of Western Australia
yesterday, taking the Cockram Stakes (Gr 3,
1200m) at Caulfield comfortably as favourite
Rubisaki (Rubick) disappointed. First-up since
running second in the Strickland Stakes (Gr 3,
2000m) in June and stepping out below 1400
metres for just the second time since she won
the Belgravia Stakes (Listed, 1200m) early
in her three-year-old career in 2017, Perfect
Jewel finished off powerfully under William
Pike, sweeping clear to score by a length over
Bless Her (Street Boss) with She Shao Fly
(Epaulette) grabbing third. A campaign aimed
at the Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) looks
likely for Perfect Jewel. “She’s done a great job,
this mare,” said co-trainer Grant Williams. “She
had 12 months there where she was a bit quiet
but the team at home have done a super job
with her. She’s really blossomed since she got
here. I’ve been using her to get the others fit
and she’s been beating most of them. She’s had
good groundwork at home. To get them out of
the sand and onto the track really helps them.
Much the same as when we were over here last
time. This is the same category there.” Favourite
Rubisaki finished 10th, with trainer Patrick
Payne at a loss to explain the poor effort.
Premiers Cup to MugatooEnglish import Mugatoo (6 g Henrythenavigator
- Elopa by Tiger Hill) is likely to be aimed at The
Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) after he remained
unbeaten this preparation with a tough victory
in the Premiers Cup (Gr 3, 1900m) at Rosehill.
Starting as the $1.90 favourite, Mugatoo defeated
Sikandarabad (Dr Fong) by a length and a quarter
with outsider Herengawe (Zed) a nose away in
third. Jockey Kerrin McEvoy had indicated pre-
race that he thought Mugatoo would make an
ideal Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) horse fresh,
but trainer Kris Lees suggested that Mugatoo was
more likely to head down a staying path. "He could
end up in a Newcastle Cup in three weeks time,
which would then lead into the Metrop where he
would still get in alright at the handicaps," Lees
said. "He is taking the right steps. It was another
test for him today and he reacted well. I'm sure he
will come on again from the run. He has a bright
future." It was a third stakes win for the Australian
Bloodstock-owned Mugatoo, adding to his
victories in the Canberra Cup (Listed, 2000m) and
the Winter Challenge (Listed, 1500m).
Third Listed win for Free TradeConsistent performer Free Trade (6 g Trade
Fair - Lady Xena by Dr Johnson) scored a third
Listed victory yesterday when he added the
Idyllic Prince Stakes (Listed, 1300m) to his
record. Having won the Pinjarra Classic (Listed,
1300m) and the Bunbury Stakes (Listed, 1400m)
earlier this year, the Michael Lane-trained Free
Trade was sent out the drifting $2.50 favourite
after disappointing first-up. However, it was the
real Free Trade who turned up yesterday, with
Chris Parnham swinging off him as he went to
the lead at the 200 metres. However, while the
challengers closed, they couldn’t get closer
than a half-length, with Free Trade defeating
Flow (Street Cry) and Multiverse (Universal
Ruler). “It was obviously great to see him come
back today and do that,” Lane said. “It’s a sense
of relief I suppose, but we knew we hadn’t lost
him that far. It was good to have him right today.
I thought it was a courageous run after what
happened last start, so onwards and upwards
going forward.” Lane said that Free Trade was
likely to aim towards the Railway Stakes (Gr 1,
1600m) in November.

Maher, Eustace look to bigger things with stayersAfter wins to Persan (Pierro) and Al Galayel
(Zoffany) in two of the undercard handicaps at
Caulfield yesterday, Ciaron Maher and David
Eustace will look towards qualifying races for the
Cups with the pair. Persan won the 2400-metre
open handicap to kick off the card, making it four
city wins from his last five starts. After stepping out
of three-year-old grade into open company with
ease, Persan is likely bound for the Ansett Classic
(Listed, 2400m) or The Bart Cummings (Gr 3,
2500m), with the latter offering a ballot-exempt
spot for the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). "That
was quite impressive. He's got a rating to allow
him to go through the grades. He's going to go
up again today but we'll give him the opportunity
to run in a nice race," Eustace said. Al Galayel,
ridden by Ben Melham, defeated two Cups
contenders in Orderofthegarter (Galileo) and
Schabau (Pastorius) and is likely to run next in the
Naturalism Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m), which offers a
berth into the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m). "He's
just in a really good vein of form. Ben knows him
really well and that swooping run really suits
him," Eustace said. "He just had to stick it out late
because he was asked for a good effort."
Dancing Gidget on Eagle pathTrainer Chris Waller believes that Dancing Gidget
(Al Maher) could potentially make it to the Golden
Eagle Stakes (1500m) on October 31 after she took
out the opener, a 1500-metre fillies and mares
Benchmark 78, at Rosehill yesterday. Waller has a
large team of horses potentially heading towards
the $7.5 million Golden Eagle with “about 20
horses” from Sydney’s largest stable entered for
the four-year-old feature. "We did all our noms on
Friday,” Waller said. “It's not just about winning
a $7.5 million race, it's actually being in the field
and getting second, third, fourth prize-money."
Boss suspended for overweightGlen Boss was given a six-day suspension after
weighing in a kilo over his allotted weight on board
the fifth-placed Girl Tuesday (Street Cry) following
yesterday’s Premier’s Cup at Rosehill. Girl Tuesday
finished a long-neck behind the runner-up
Sikandarabad (Dr Fong) and a neck behind the
third placegetter Herengawe (Zed). Boss weighed
in at 55 kilograms, while his declared weight was 54
kilograms. He was banned from September 6 and
will be free to ride again on September 12.
Kah handed Caulfield banJamie Kah's flying start to the season is set to come
to an abrupt halt after she was given an eight
meeting suspension for careless riding by the
Caulfield stewards yesterday. Kah, who received
the ban for her ride aboard the fourth-placed Extra
Time (Shooting To Win) in the McNeil Stakes, will
start her suspension after Sunday’s meeting at
Geelong (September 6) and will be free to return
for the Wodonga meeting on September 15. Kah
leads the Victorian Jockeys' Premiership with 16
winners and shares second with Damien Oliver
for the Melbourne Jockeys' Premiership with
seven wins. The pair trail Ben Melham, whose
Caulfield double yesterday moved him into the
lead with eight.
NEW ZEALAND
Ormsby returns to winners’ circle after eight-year absenceTrainer Tony Pike was delighted to pick up a
victory with his only runner at Tauranga yesterday
but it was made even more special by the winning
rider he had aboard. Four-year-old Divine Dive
(Sacred Falls) made it two wins from his last five
starts under the stewardship of Chad Ormsby, a
late replacement on the day for Michael McNab
who had to forego the mount due to weight
issues. Ormsby made a comeback to riding in
June following the Covid-19 lockdown after giving
up riding back in April, 2012, with his victory on
Divine Dive being his first since he returned. The
31-year-old Matamata horseman has spent the
last eight years as a trainer, breaker and doing
sales preparations under his Riverrock Farm
banner. Ormsby’s last winner came aboard the
Pike-trained Waterford (Darci Brahma) at Te
Rapa on March 28, 2012. “I’m rapt for Chad as
when I was just starting to go alright as a trainer,
Chad was probably my stable rider,” Pike said.
“He rode horses like Historian and Aspinal for me,
although he chose the wrong year to retire as he
missed out on the ride on Sacred Falls. He did a
great job though, so I’m thrilled to be able to give
him his first winner back.”
Derby winner sparkles in lieu of stubborn Guineas heroine Pike had mixed luck at Tauranga with New
Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sherwood
Forest (Fastnet Rock) having a nice hit-out in
a 1000-metre exhibition gallop for rider Troy
Harris. However, New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr
1, 1600m) heroine Loire (Redoute’s Choice) was
at her headstrong best when refusing to exit the
birdcage as she missed out on accompanying her
stablemate on the track. “Sherwood Forest went
a nice 1000 metres although Troy was looking
after him in that ground,” the trainer said. “He was
very strong after the line and is coming up really
well. He might have a canter around at Ellerslie in
two weeks, as long as the track isn’t too wet and
then we will probably head to the second day at
Hastings. Loire was just being her normal self.
She’s not easy and although she is pretty calm,
she has a mind of her own and if she doesn’t want
to do something that’s pretty much it. She doesn’t
get wound up at all, she just says no, not today
boys. I’m really rapt with the way she is coming up
so we will probably put her on a truck now and
take her to the beach for a workout next Tuesday.”
Pitman team bag doubleCarson River (Swiss Ace) provided the second
leg of a winning double for the Michael and
Matthew Pitman training partnership at Riccarton
on Saturday following a maiden success for
Heartoheart (Swiss Ace). Carson River had put
the writing on the wall that a win was close when
he stormed home for second behind He Kin Fly
(Darci Brahma) at his last start. A heady ride by
stable apprentice Kavish Chowdhoory provided
the lightly-raced seven-year-old with a perfect run
in transit and he utilised a powerful sprint to finish
over the top of his rivals in the rating 89 1400-metre
contest. “He (Carson River) probably should have
won last time but he is a horse that needs to be
ridden just the right way as he only has a short
sprint,” Michael Pitman said. “Kavish is really riding
well at the moment and that was an eleven out of
ten effort as he was patient and had him in the right
spot at just the right time. His ride on Heartoheart
was equally as good as he had her in the one-out
and one-back position in the blink of an eye and
then gave her plenty of room to get going coming
to the turn. She is a big mare that needs space and I
don’t think that will be her last win.”

Eva James impresses in Riccarton winVisiting northern trainer Ken Rae kicked off his
day at Riccarton in the best possible style when
the promising Eva James (Super Easy) cruised to a
comfortable victory. The filly went south off the back
of two impressive performances at Te Rapa in July
behind the highly-regarded De La Terre (Reliable
Man) and looked to have a class edge on her rivals
in the 1200-metre three-year-old contest in which
she eased clear to beat stablemate Zoltan (Iffraaj) by
three lengths. “She’s been placed up north behind
some very smart horses so we had expected a good
run,” Rae, who trains in partnership with daughter
Krystal Williams-Tuhoro, said. “Last start she had
De La Terre beaten at the 300 metres but she got up
to pip us. People said we were unlucky but she was
just beaten by a better horse that day.”
ASIA
Korean racing to come to a haltToday’s meetings at Seoul and Busan will be the last
to take place in Korea for an indefinite period after
the Korea Racing Authority yesterday announced
it intends to suspend all racing from the start of
September. The move comes after the KRA received
a government instruction issued on behalf of the
health department. The Korean government is taking
one of the strictest approaches globally to public
health in the wake of Covid-19, with fans prevented
from attending racecourses or popular sports like
baseball and soccer until the pandemic comes to an
end. While those sports continue for now, Korean
racing is struggling for funding, with a bill submitted
by lawmakers to legalise online betting unlikely to
pass before the year is out. Passing that bill early
next year will provide a new revenue stream, but the
Korean racing industry is likely to face intermittent
shutdowns until the Covid-19 pandemic passes.
INTERNATIONAL
Seven for ShalaaArrowfield shuttler Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) was
represented by his seventh individual winner from
his first northern hemisphere crop yesterday when
Legal Attack (2 c ex Lauren Louise by Tagula) struck
on debut at Newmarket. The Simon and Ed Crisford
trained juvenile was sent off as favourite and looks a
colt of promise as he came from last, making rapid
headway in the final furlong to win comfortably
by three quarters of a length. He was a 250,000gns
Craven Breeze-Up purchase and holds an entry
in the Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f). Bred by Toby
Barker, he is a half-brother to stakes winner Blaine
and Bogart and is out of the winning Tagula (Taufan)
mare Lauren Louise. Middle Park Stakes and Prix
Morny (Gr 1, 6f) winner Shalaa will stand this season
at Arrowfield Stud for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST). His
seven winners include four horses that have just
missed the placings in Group company with Cherie
Amour, Shalaalaa and No Speak Alexander each
running fourth in Group contests.
First for BelardoHanuai Farm shuttler Belardo (Lope De Vega) sired
his first stakes winner when Isabella Giles (2 f ex
Majestic Dubawi by Dubawi) put her rivals firmly
in their place with a runaway win in yesterday’s
Prestige Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Goodwood. The Clive
Cox-trained juvenile was winning for the third time
in four starts as she pulled well clear under and
hands and heels ride from Adam Kirby to beat the
staying on Prado (Iffraaj) by a comfortable seven
lengths. Seattle Rock (Fastnet Rock) was another
head away in third. Isabella Giles is the fifth foal out
of the Group 3 juvenile winner Majestic Dubawi,
three of whom have won. Belardo stands at Hanuai
Farm for a fee of NZ$10,000 (plus GST).
38 for Dutch ArtBrad The Brief (3 g ex Kenzadargent by Kendargent)
did just enough to see off the challenge of the fast
finishing Summerghand (Lope De Vega) and take
out the Hopeful Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Newmarket
yesterday. Registering his fifth win in eight starts, the
Tom Dascombe-trained gelding became the 38th
individual stakes winner for Dutch Art (Medicean).
Stewards’ Cup (6f) winner Summerghand was
doing his best work late on but could only get to
within a neck of the winner, with Highland Dress
(Shamardal) another length away in third. Brad The
Brief is the first foal out of the US Listed winning
mare Kenzadargent (Kendargent). Dutch Art
stood at Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket for an
undisclosed fee in 2020.
25 for LeroidesanimauxMelbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hope Le Don De
Vie (4 g ex Leaderene by Selkirk) registered the
vital win he needed to stand a chance of getting in
the field for the Flemington feature when scoring
a comfortable victory in the August Stakes (Listed,
1m 3.5f) at Windsor yesterday. Carrying the colours
of Ozzie Khier, the Hughie Morrison-trained four-
year-old appeared to have something in hand as he
crossed the line a length and three-quarters in front
of Communique (Casamento), racing off a British
Official Rating of 106. Desert Encounter (Halling)
overcame a troublesome passage to finish a further
half a length away in third. This was a fourth win in
12 starts for Le Don De Vie, who was making his
breakthrough in stakes company to become his sire
Leroidesanimaux’s (Candy Stripe) 25th individual
stakes winner. A £460,000 purchase at last year’s
Goffs London Sale, Le Don De Vie was trimmed to
33-1 by the northern hemisphere bookmakers for
Cup glory. The late Leroidesanimaux is best known
as the sire of Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) winner
Animal Kingdom.
Century Dream runs away with Celebration MileCentury Dream (Cape Cross) puts his five rivals
firmly in their place when scooting clear to land
Goodwood’s Celebration Mile (Gr 2, 1m) in
convincing style. Trained by the father and son
partnership of Simon and Ed Crisford, the six-
year-old was emulating his sire Cape Cross (Green
Desert) by winning this race. Now successful in nine
of his 26 starts, Century Dream beat the staying on
Sir Busker (Sir Prancealot) by a comfortable four
and a half lengths. The front-running Regal Reality
(Intello) dropped away to be another length and
three quarters away in third.
Subjectivist impressive in March StakesThe Mark Johnston-trained Subjectivist (Teofilo),
who was third in the Gordon Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f)
at Goodwood last month, returned to the track
and claimed his first Group success in the March
Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 6f) yesterday. The three-year-old
won the Glasgow Stakes (Listed, 1m 3f) in July and
is 20-1 for next month’s St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m
6.5f) at Doncaster. The colt put up an impressive
performance in the soft ground winning at his
ease by 15 lengths from Lillie Langtry Stakes (Gr 2,
1m 6f) runner-up Cabaletta (Mastercraftsman),
while Celtic Art (Mastercraftsman) was a further 21
lengths back in third.

as she registered a stakes race double
on the Windsor card when Extra Elusive

the Winter Hill Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2f). The Roger
Charlton-trained five-year-old followed up his
victory in the Rose Of Lancaster Stakes (Gr 3,

of Fox Chairman (Kingman) to hit the line a
length in front of the odds-on favourite. Sky
Defender (Farhh) was another two and three-
quarter lengths behind in third.

five-year-old was recording his fourth win
at Listed level this year and fifth in total and
he holds an entry in next month’s Flying Five
Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) back at the Curragh. Sent off as

yesterday. Just two necks split the first three
home as the Glen Kotzen-trained filly got the

stands at Varsfontein Stud for a fee of 75,000 ZAR
(approx AUD$6,150) in 2020.
Van Halen doubles Grade 1 tallyVan Halen (Oratorio) notched his first win since
July last year as he bounced back to winning
ways to land yesterday’s Mercury Sprint (Gr 1,
1200m) at Greyville. The Corne Spies-trained
five-year-old was winning for the seventh time
in 24 starts and the second at elite level having
taken out the Scottsville Gold Medallion (Gr 1,
1200m) back in 2018. Sent off an 11-2 chance,
he crossed the line a length and half in front
of Warrior’s Rest (What A Winter), with Fabian
(What A Winter) another neck away in third.
Golden Ducat shines again in Champions CupCape Derby (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Golden

level win when getting the better of stablemate
Rainbow Bridge (Ideal World) in a desperately
close finish to yesterday’s Champions Cup
(Gr 1, 1800m) at Greyville. Just a short head
separated the Eric Sands-trained pair as they
hit the wire, with Cirillo (Pomodoro) a further
neck away in third.

One of the racing industry’s most
beloved ambassadors, Melbourne
Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Subzero
(Kala Dancer), was humanely
euthanised yesterday at the age of 32.
Media personality Bruce Clark, a close
friend of Subzero’s caretakers, the Salisbury
family, announced Subzero’s death on social
media yesterday afternoon. It comes only
weeks after the Salisbury patriarch Graham,
frequently referred to as “Subbie’s best mate”,
died after a long battle with illness.
The announcement triggered an
outpouring of emotion as tributes flowed right
across the racing world and beyond.
Richard Freedman, who with his brothers
prepared Subzero for his 48-start career,
told The Age’s Damien Ractliffe: "He was the
greatest living thoroughbred before he died
and now he's the greatest ever, not just because
of what he did on the track but the joy he gave
people after he finished racing and the service
he gave to racing. He was a clerk of a course,
visiting schools, being an ambassador; there'll
never be one like him. He was one of a kind, a
freak of nature."
Former Racing.com presenter Shane
Anderson said: “Subzero, the most magnificent
horse of all ... touched more hearts and simply
did more good than what most people could
comprehend, let alone try to replicate. Now
peacefully with his best mate Graham Salisbury
once again. Legend.”
Outside the racing industry and beyond
Australia’s shores, the impact of Subzero was
recognised far and wide.
Channel 7 producer Kate Jones reminisced:
“I was honoured to meet Subzero and have
him slobber on my jumper when he visited the
(Seven News Melbourne) building five years
ago. He transcended racing, and brought joy
to countless people over many years. Vale the
people’s horse.”
Candice Hare, international racing
presenter for American broadcaster TVG, led
the global tributes: “There have been over 100
Melbourne Cup winners, but there will only
ever be one Subzero. The sport of horse racing
is better simply for having had Subbie as a
participant. A fantastic horse on the racetrack
and an even better one off of it. Truly one of a
kind.”
Few horses in Australia or around the world
have formed a similar connection with humans
in the manner that Subzero did. His bond with
every person he encountered was legendary:
from the school kid touching their first horse to
the elderly resident meeting a long-lost friend
for the first time; from the casual racing fan to
the ardent racegoer; from the equine novice to
the pony enthusiast.
He had a number of factors in his favour,
of course, being a grey who won the race that
stops the nation, the Melbourne Cup, at a time
when the winner would instantly become an
Australian hero, a household name.
Subzero was a three-time Group 1 winner
on the track when prepared by Lee Freedman,
taking out the South Australian Derby (Gr 1,
2500m) and the Adelaide Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in
addition to his Melbourne Cup success in 1992.
With that sort of resume, he had done enough
to remain an idol even if he did nothing again
under the public’s gaze.
As a grey, though, he was a natural
candidate to join Graham Salisbury as a clerk
of the course. And it was through that work
that he became Australia’s most famous retired
thoroughbred, becoming a fixture at Melbourne
race meetings from 1994 until 2008.
It was while he was working as a clerk of the
course that he, along with Salisbury, became
an ambassador for Racing Victoria. He visited
schools and retirement villages, travelled the
world and brought his calm, docile, inviting
attitude to a new audience.
“Subbie was racing’s most famous equine
ambassador and we were privileged to have
had him headline our ‘Subzero Goes to School’
program for many years travelling to every
corner of the state and beyond,” Racing Victoria
chief executive Giles Thompson said yesterday.
“Many youngsters have grown up having
only had the chance to meet and pat one
horse. That horse was Subbie and the laughter
that emanated from those kids when Subbie
nodded his head to a question of whether he
had a girlfriend is something that will live long
with many of us.

Vale Subzero: a hero on the track, a champion away from the racecourse, a legend gone
Subzero SHARON CHAPMAN
| 12 |
“From school children to the elderly, those
battling ill health to Hollywood A-listers, Subbie
and Graham did plenty to bring joy to their lives
whilst promoting the sport of thoroughbred
racing at the same time.”
The decision to humanely euthanise
Subzero was made yesterday by Salisbury’s
widow Anita, in consultation with Bendigo
Equine vet Sarah Jalim.
“I’ve never been confident of anything in
my life, this was sadly the right time and this
was what we had to do for Subbie,” Jalim told
Clark for Racenet.
“I looked at him today and knew he’d been
holding together for so long, sure he’d been
missing Graham, but he’d accumulated fluid
on his chest.
“Heart disease isn’t common in horses,
he’d had a heart murmur for some time, but
eventually the heart decompensates so that it
can’t push the blood back. He hasn’t suffered
at all.
“He was a gentleman, a thorough
gentleman with an unbelievable heart. If you
want to compare him to champions: Black
Caviar was unbeaten; Winx won lots of races;
Subbie, he did so much for so many people and
that’s how he should be remembered, a very
special horse.”
When Subzero won his Melbourne Cup, it
was forever punctuated by the soundtrack of
racecaller Bryan Martin: “Subzero might be the
one … it’s the grey’s Cup!”
For many racing fans, Subzero was the one,
on that gloomy first Tuesday in November in
1992 until his death yesterday.
Vale Subbie.

ALL TOO HARDSire of 10 SW’ers in 2019/20
Analysis: South Australian-trained gelding Behemoth capped his consistent record with a solid performance in taking out this Group 1 feature, his sixth win with four placings in 16 starts. Having his second run this preparation after winning the Spring Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Morphettville a fortnight ago, he had a good trip under Craig Williams in fourth place on the rails, took a split at the home turn, hit the front at the 200m and then went on to score comfortably. The 2018 Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) Mr Quickie settled in ninth place on the rails, eased deeper and into clear running at the turn and then finished really well for second in a good first-up performance. Glenfiddich showed early pace and settled in third place, moved up at the turn and then held on well in a nice effort, resuming here. Cascadian settled in last place in the 13-runner field, went widest of all on turning for home and kept making ground for (2.4 lengths) fourth. So Si Bon was a handy sixth to the turn and held on to finish (2.5 lengths) fifth while Begood Toya Mother was pressured in front (by Streets Of Avalon) and did well in holding on for (2.8 lengths) sixth. Then followed: Every Rose (AUS), Doubtland (AUS) & Osamu (AUS), last.
Analysis: The only question about Anders was whether he could manage the Good 4 track, coming off an impressive Listed win here on a heavy surface. The answer was a resounding yes, blitzing his five opponents in a powerhouse display. He jumped in line but soon sped to the lead, away by more than two lengths at the 800m, stretching that to more than five lengths inside the 600m. James McDonald sat quietly past the 300m then gave him a shake at the 200m but he needn’t have bothered, Anders was doing it very comfortably, McDonald dropping his hands at the 50m, still more than three in front for win four (consecutive) at start eight and in a slashing 62.67 seconds. Peltzer led the chase, closed the gap a little from the 300m but was game to the line while Mamaragan, from a clear last passing the 600m, ran on quite well in the straight for third, the first three well clear of the rest. Then followed: Bold Star (AUS), Garner (AUS), Humma Humma (AUS), Banquo (AUS), Dollar For Dollar (AUS), Superstorm (AUS), Crystal Dreamer (AUS), Maritana (AUS), Rock Prophet (AUS) & Trope (AUS), last.
Analysis: Unbeaten in four runs last preparation, Diamond Effort maintained her winning sequence with a bold first-up performance. She began well from her wide barrier (13), settled in fifth place but caught out three wide before moving up strongly at the 200m. She hit the front at the 100m and then fought back gamely despite a wide trip for a very good win, her eighth victory in 14 starts. The 2019 Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Lyre drifted back from her good barrier (2), settled midfield on the rails before improving along the inner at the turn. Luke Currie eased her deeper and into clear running at the 200m and she then kept running on well for (half-neck) second in a good first-up performance. Runson showed good pace from his difficult barrier (12) and settled outside the leader (Crystal Dreamer). He took a narrow lead coming to the 200m and then kept fighting gamely for a third in a nice effort at his first run back. Bold Star settled towards the tail of the field, went across heels coming to the 200m and then ran on well over the closing stages for a close-up fourth in a good first-up effort. Garner was another late-closer, making ground for (0.7 lengths) fifth with Humma Humma battling on well on for a close-up sixth, beaten less than a length. [KB]

(AUS), The Last Charge (AUS), Loca (AUS), Larimer Street (AUS), Our Playboy (AUS) & Branders Rule (AUS), last.
Analysis: Progressive unbeaten three-year-old Immortal Love has now advanced from winning a two-year-old maiden (1100m) at Echuca on May 4 to taking out a two-year-old Plate (1400m) at Flemington later than month to scoring a narrow but impressive first-up victory at Group 3 level here. He settled back in tenth place, tracking a solid tempo, before improving between runners at the turn. Craig Newitt switched wider and into clear running at the 300m and the gelding then sprinted smartly, coming with a late bid to score by short-half-head at the post. Flying Award settled near last in the 15-runner field, looked for a run in the centre on straightening and then came with a solid burst when fully clear for a very close second in a smart first-up run. The favourite Tagaloa worked early on before racing outside the leader (Hard Landing). He was under riding at the turn but then kept responding in the straight and fought gamely for a very close-up third in a good first-up performance. Extra Time was handily placed from his awkward barrier (12) and trapped deep, close to the pace before challenging halfway down the straight. He then tried hard and did very well in fighting on for (0.4 lengths) fourth. Ranting was last at the turn and caught the eye in running on for (0.8 lengths) fifth while Crosshaven held on well for sixth, beaten a length, at his first run back at only his third start. [KB]

Margins: 1.3 lens, 0.2 lens. Time: 1:22.55(last 600m 33.88).Betting: $10.00, $9.00, $2.60.
Then followed: Aim (AUS), Oscar Zulu (AUS), Kumasi (AUS), Street Dancer (AUS) & Achiever (AUS), last.
Analysis: In similar fashion to his stablemate, Anders, two races prior, Holyfield, second up, was too strong once assuming the lead, taking his record to four wins (second stakes) at start seven. Vying for the lead he was trapped four deep early but at the 1000m Tim Clark shot him into the lead, widening the margin to a length and a half at the 800m, maintaining it inside the 600m and hugging the rail to the top of the straight. Challenged at the 300m, Clark gave him a kick approaching the 200m and they broke away, going to the line a length and a quarter clear. A nice run from Bazooka who was locked away on the fence in fifth from the 600m, found space inside the 400m, threaded between runners after pulling out then flew home to grab second on the line. Overlord sat last at the 600m, went wide in the straight and kept on well, just losing second at the post. Aim tracked the winner into the straight, held second but was swamped over the last 50m for fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: Lightly-raced Mugatoo has now won five of his seven Australian starts (seven wins in 13 starts total) including three stakes and was again too good here. He found a nice run in sixth, one off the fence past the 1600m and held that position past the 1200m. Kerrin McEvoy pushed him wider from the 600m and at the top of the straight they were camped in behind the leading four. Within a length of the lead at the 300m he went up to form a line of three at the 200m then strode into the lead, too good by a length and a quarter. Sikandarabad sat a handy third from the 1400m, hugged the rail in third rounding into the straight but did not get out until late, diving through to nab second a stride from the line. Herengawe was a handy fourth, one out at the 800m, third at the 400m shared the lead at the 200m then kept going, losing second at the post. Taikomochi led them into the straight, was caught at the 200m then bravely held on for a close fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: The multiple stakes-winning West Australian-trained mare Perfect Jewel scored a very good first-up win here when having her first run outside of her home state and at her first start since running second in the Strickland Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Belmont in June. She travelled nicely for William Pike in eighth place, improved (wide) from the 600m, moved up strongly at the 200m and then showed her class in going on to score quite comfortably. Bless Her had a nice trip in third place, improved along the rails to challenge at the turn. Took the lead at the 200m but had no answer to the winner’s late bid and did well in fighting on for second. She Shao Fly was fifth on the rails, got along the inner in the straight and then battled on nicely for third with She’s A Thief holding on for (3.2 lengths) fourth after leading the field until halfway down the straight. Of the others, Madam Rouge caught the eye in running on from last, when clear late for (3.6 lengths) sixth while the favourite Rubisaki raced well below her prior form (eight wins and a second from ten starts), missing a place for the first time. She raced in seventh place, a bit deep, was under riding on straightening and then battled for (5.6 lengths) tenth. [KB]

Analysis: Favourite and super honest Free Trade took his record to nine wins (three stakes) and seven placings in 17 career starts with a convincing win here. He was first away to lead briefly before settling third (rails) past the 1000m where he remained to the top of the straight. With plenty of room he moved away from the fence at the 300m, joined the pacemaker soon after then strolled into the lead at the 200m. To the post he was in complete control, flattering his opponents when eased near the line. Flow sat second last (rails) at the 800m, moved away from the fence well into the straight then finished strongly for second when the race was all over. Multiverse had a nice run, one out and one back in fourth to the straight then kept on solidly for third while pacemaker Saracino was collared at the 200m then battled away for fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: Sky Punch caused an upset here in leading from the jump to score his maiden stakes success and fifth career win in 23 starts. He went straight to front but had an easy time of things by a length early then by a half length past the 800m and on to the 400m. Rounding into the straight he kicked away, still clear by a length at the 200m then held on well by three quarters of a length when it mattered. Morvada led the chase sitting just back and outside the winner, was third at the 200m then came on well to race into second near the line. The favourite Dalasan was among the last four at the 600m, got into the clear at the 300m then rattled home but much too late for third. Dexelation moved into second (rails) at the 200m then battled away for a close up fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: The ‘Black Caviar’ combination of Peter Moody and Luke Nolan were reunited with a surprise $61 winner here when the mare In Good Health stepped up in class after winning a Benchmark 70 at Sandown Hillside on August 12 to take out this Listed event. She soon crossed from her wide barrier (15) to race outside the leader (Think We’re Due) at a good tempo. She got the upper hand at the 200m and then lifted gamely to score a narrow but very good win. The favourite Sircconi enjoyed an ideal trip in third place, looked the winner when he loomed at the 200m and then kept battling gamely for (short head) second. Game Keeper raced in fifth place on the rails, improved behind runners at the turn, got clear running over the latter stages and kept fighting on for a close-up third with the front-runner Think We’re Due holding on well for (1.5 lengths) fourth after running a bold race. VERDICT D’Bai had Snazzy Jazzy and HAPPY POWER behind whenwinning at Haydock but of the three of them the last-named, since
a good winner at Salisbury, may prove best suited by these conditions and healready has smart form here. Escobar’s challenge petered out quickly at York lastweek but a previous third here suggests he can also be involved if back to his best, while the return to 7f could be a good move for Cloak Of Spirits.[Emily Weber]
