Welcome New Homeowners to the Seabreeze Community!
Ken and Lucille Bleimann moved to 161 Ambermist Way in October, 2018. Originally from New York (Staten Island and Brooklyn), they previously lived in Jackson for 31 years. Ken had his own construction/home remodeling business for many years. He is now employed by Paramount Homes of Manahawkin as a Senior Warranty Officer. Lucille was a child care provider before she decided to stay home and raise their three children. They have been blessed with six grandchildren ranging in ages from 14 months to 10 years old.
Ken and Lucille both love to travel and have been to numerous Caribbean locations, Hawaii and Italy. Ken, who stays fit by using the gym, has in the past run in the New York City marathon. Lucille also enjoys working out at the gym and enjoys cooking,
especially Sunday dinners. They both enjoy spending as much time as possible with their grandchildren.
Kerri Davenport moved to 135 Ambermist Way on August 3, 2018, along with her mother Joyce Gavan after living in Toms River for 30 years. Kerri worked for Allstate for 12 years before having children. She then decided to be a stay at home mom to raise her two girls. One daughter lives in NYC and works for Goldman Saks, and the other is married and lives in Nashville where she works in the music industry. Kerri enjoys traveling, reading, shopping, socializing and visiting with her children.
Joyce previously lived in Lakewood’s Pine Beach area for 40 years and was a teacher for 35 years. Joyce likes to read, visit with friends and go to the book club.
Pat Majcher moved into 185 Ambermist Way on October 18, 2018 from Hillsborough, New Jersey. She worked for over 30 years in the pharmaceutical industry. Her job included some traveling and it didn’t afford her much spare time. She recently retired; therefore, she is looking to embark on new hobbies. Pat enjoys reading, walking and watching old movies from the 30’s and 40’s. She has always wanted to dabble with gardening and will do so when springtime returns. She also would like to get involved in one of our exercise programs. She enjoys traveling and has been to Europe many times. She appreciates Sunday coffee at the clubhouse where she has met many residents. Pat is grateful that her sister Susan has also joined the Sea Breeze Community.
Art and Lorraine Ricciardi moved to 157 Ambermist Way in November, 2018. Both Lorraine and Art grew up in New York, but then spent most of their married life in Connecticut. Before moving to Sea Breeze, they lived in South Carolina in a gulf community built by Toll. Their main reason for coming back to New Jersey was to be near their two children and four grandchildren. Art worked in the chemical industry for 40 years for Esso before they became Exxon. Lorraine also started her career at Esso before staying home to raise their two children. She then worked as a school aid after her children were grown. Art loves to play golf and enjoys walking. He walks no matter what the weather is like, even in the snow. He is already becoming involved in the community and has volunteered in several issues. Lorraine likes to work out and
read. She also enjoys knitting and playing Mahjong and of course they both love spending time with their grandchildren.

Inquiring PhotographerHow did you meet your spouse/partner/significant other?
Barbara Bastian: “We met on a blind date and we were introduced by my ex-husband’s aunt. We went to Edger’s Bar & Grill in Sea Girt and were married five months later. We have been married for 33 years.”
Tony Del Prete: “I was in Brooklyn on my lunch hour and went for a slice of pizza. I’m nearsighted; Cathy walked in and I thought she was someone I knew. I was squinting looking at her and she came over to me and wanted to know if I knew her. I said no, but I got her phone number and then I lost her number. Good thing she told me where she worked. I went and found her and we have been married for 30 years.”
Cathy Branciforte: “I met my husband Joe in the Sports Bar at the Hasbrouck Heights Sheraton in June 1980. My Dad had passed away in May and my friends took me out the following month. Joe saw me and came over and started a conversation; the rest is history. We were married eight months later and we’ll be celebrating our 38th anniversary on February 21st.”
Art Albrizio: “When I was the president of my fraternity at Trenton State College, Nancy came to our Christmas party with one of my frat brothers. She immediately caught my eye. I asked him if it was a serious relationship and he said no, they were just good friends. I asked her for a date. We are happily married and 47 years later we are fortunately still dating.”
Connie Bimonte: “I went to high school with Mike’s best friend. We were out skateboarding when I met him and for me it was love at first sight. He was Mr. Continental, suede front sweater, matching suede shoes and shark-skin pants. I invited him to my sweet 16 party and we had our first kiss. We have two children and have been married for 45 years.”
Angelo Gubbay: “I was in school and had a night job at a gas station. Barbara lived on a hill behind the station. When I would be cleaning up before closing, she would walk by on her way to the deli. Sometimes she would drive in to gas up her Chevy Corvair. That was a good job I had because we have been married for 35 years.”

Celebrate Valentine’s Day
Each year on February 14, people exchange cards, candy or flowers with their special “valentine.” St. Valentine’s Day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century. There are various stories surrounding its beginnings and most of them are too boring to read. Fast forward to modern times and examine things associated with the day. Children in elementary school hand out cards and eat the sugar candy hearts with those old familiar sayings of, “Be Mine, True Love, I Want U, Love Me, Love Bug” etc. High schoolers exchange flowers. Dads not only bring home the largest candy heart for their wife but smaller versions for their daughters. Partners celebrate with a romantic dinner or exchange gifts. Over 6 million couples opt to get engaged on this day. The average number of weddings on a weekday throughout the year increases substantially for February 14. A study found those who marry on February 14 are 37% more likely to split and are also 45% less likely to make it to their third anniversary. Al Capone celebrated with a massacre. Here at Sea Breeze we will celebrate it on February 15th with a lovely get together in the clubhouse. However you choose to spend the day, do it with love and maybe extend that love to a stranger.

CIVIC AFFAIRS GROUP UPDATE
The challenges pertaining to the closing of Oyster Creek are increasing. Exelon and Holtec want to complete the license transfer as soon as possible. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission appears to be following their request. It is through repeated requests from our Concerned Citizens of Lacey Coalition and other organizations to hold a public hearing that the NRC is weighing our request. Obviously, Exelon and Holtec disagree on the need to hold such a hearing. To date, we have submitted about 75 questions regarding the transfer and its implications and we have not had any response. We understand Lacey Township has not received any response to their questions either. Our concerns are:1. The structure of Holtec’s LLC and its partner, the
Canadian firm SNC-Lavalin, which recently was fined by the Canadian Government $110 million dollars for bribes and other fraudulent acts.
2. The storage of spent fuel in Lacey. Holtec manufacturers the casks, and is guaranteeing the storage casks for only 20 years. The “life” of those rods is over 200,000 years! It begs the question after decommissioning, who changes out the old casks and replaces them with new ones? Who pays for it?
3. Energy Revenue Taxes, ERT, were wrongly taken from Municipalities by the State. The State now has to return the ERT portion that was taken back to those municipalities. In Lacey, over $10 million is to be returned. Our question is who in Lacey is pushing for those funds to be returned. Laws have been passed for their return and no one is acting to get it done. Imagine the positive impact on our taxes!
4. We are asking to meet with both Senator Booker and Congressman Kim to get them involved in this effort.
5. Senator Elizabeth Warren is heavily involved in the nuclear plant closing in Mass. We have reached out to her staff to work together with us. Exelon and Holtec are proposing the same working relationship in Massachusetts as they have for Oyster Creek.
6. We are working with members of the media, providing them with information. There are 3 nuclear plants in NJ and the concerns and implications to the citizens and taxers are the same.
7. Safety is a big concern, not only for storage but also for transporting them to the interim facility in New Mexico.
The Town will receive $12-$15 million dollars per year for storing spent casks at the plant.
8. Security: how are Homeland Security, NJ State Police, Ocean County Sheriff and Lacey PD involved in protecting the plant. What response or assistance plans are in place to protect all surrounding towns?
The above represents a few of our action items just on the plant. There are many more. Members of Sea Breeze have asked us for an overall presentation on the plant, the School Board and other items affecting us. We plan to do this either at the end of the month or the beginning of February.
In the meantime, again we are asking for your participation. There is a lot to be done and your help would be greatly appreciated.
Lastly, we need everyone to sign the Concerned Citizens of Lacey Coalition form. It is non-partisan. Get your friends to sign, the more signatures the stronger and more influential our voice becomes.
Call Ron Martyn, 201-388-9868 or email him, [email protected], to join us in our efforts.
Thank you on behalf of the Civic Affairs Group & Concerned Citizens of Lacey Coalition.

Peripheral Neuropathyis a condition that affects millions of Americans, commonly resulting in pain, tingling, numbness, and other painful symptoms in the hands, legs and feet. This pain changes your life and affects how you work, how you play and how you live.
How do you know if YOU havePeripheral Nerve Damage?Peripheral neuropathy is the consequence of damage to your peripheral nerves. There are over 100 different kinds of peripheral nerve disorders or neuropathies – some are the result of a disease like diabetes, while others can be triggered by a viral infection. Many people suffer with pain for years, not realizing that their symptoms may be due to Peripheral Neuropathy. Symptoms start gradually, then get worse, including numbness, burning or tingling sensations and sharp, electrical-like pain. Sports TalkThe Bowl Season is over and we have crowned the
2018 National Champion and all that we have left from the football season is the upcoming Super Bowl. I hope for all our sake that we have a great game. If you have paid close attention to many of the bowl games that were not part of the playoff structure you should have noticed a small number of significant players from many teams chose not to participate in their games. These players made the decision to sit out these ballgames because all have either finished their in season eligibility or going to declare for the NFL draft. In order to avoid injury and risk losing a great amount of money they chose not to play.
This month I will discuss their decision and talk about one of the major questions facing big-time college sports today. Should college athletes be paid in addition to their scholarships? As with any complex issue, there are two conflicting opinions regarding this issue. In this month’s article, I will talk about some of the reasons why a number of people feel that athletes from the major revenue sports (football and basketball) should be paid.
The major reason people feel that these athletes should be paid is because the schools make a significant amount of money based on the revenue the athletes generate for their schools through ticket sales, television and radio contracts and merchandise (especially those with a certain players number). People feel it is only right that they share in this bonanza since they are the product. They also point to the amount of money paid to college coaches as another reason to reimburse the players. The prevailing reason of this particular group is that the players devote a great deal of time to their sport, miss out on a great deal of college life, some even question whether they are getting an adequate education and lastly risk injury which could be career ending. In essence, the players create the games and generate the revenue. They should share in the proceeds. These are the primary reasons for the opinion of this group.
Next month, I will present the other side of this issue which opposes paying college athletes. Stay tuned for the March installment of the Review. In the meantime, start looking at your team for March Madness and get ready for spring training. The answer to last month’s trivia question:
The 1960 Ohio State Basketball NCAA Champions -Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek, Larry Siegfried and Mel
Nowell all played in the NBA, Coach Bob Knight is in the Hall of Fame. This month’s trivia question:
Name the all-time leading point scorer in NCAA Division I basketball history and two very unique things about his records.
Bonus question: Which all-time great college and pro basketball player went to McClymonds High School in Oakland California?

FAMOUS PEOPLE OF NJHARRIET TUBMAN
Born in Maryland, Harriet Tubman became a leading African-American abolitionist who helped liberate scores of slaves through a network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. Using Cape May as her base, she led expedit ions into Maryland, bringing slaves to freedom and
serving as an inspiration for others to escape. She was the first American woman to plan and lead a military operation, a raid that freed more than 700 slaves. While she spent only a few years in New Jersey, we are proud that her reputation as an icon of freedom and courage began here and proud to have her so well known by schoolchildren across the state.
Therapy Dogs
Therapy dogs p rov ide affection, comfort and love to people in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, hospice and disaster areas. They are different from Service dogs. Service dogs are trained to provide assistance to help people who have disabilities such as visual or hearing impairments, mental disorders, seizures, mobility impairments and diabetes.
Therapy dogs must meet standards to be certified and registered and actively participate in the program. Usually they are handled by their owners but can be handled by a professional. The certification test involves knowing all the basic commands; sit, stay, down, come. The dogs must remain calm during initial greetings with an individual, crowds and loud noises. There is a food distraction portion of the test also. The dog must also behave during canine to canine interaction, must be at ease around medical equipment, such as wheel chairs, walkers, canes, portable oxygen tanks and medical beds.
Our dog OC is a 6 ½ year old Golden Retriever who has been a Therapy dog for 3 ½ years. We are certified and registered with Bright & Beautiful located in Morris Plains NJ. We visit a local assisted living/adult day care center every 2 weeks. The residents are always happy to see us and provide OC with a lot of petting and hugs. Usually during these visits we hear about all the dogs these people have had during their lifetime. Our visits really do provide a bright spot during the day for them and they do look forward to our visits.
If there is anyone in the Community that would like us to set up visits I would be more than happy to arrange them for you. Please contact me at [email protected].

Travel Trends: “Skip-Gen”“Skip-Gen” is a new term used when grandparents leave
their kids at home and travel with their grandchildren. This new dynamic is re-inventing the meaning of the family vacation.
What better way is there to bond and spend quality time with your grandchildren to create memories that will last a lifetime that they will cherish forever than to travel with them ?
Here are some of the top reasons to introduce children to travel, no matter how young:1. Adventure: Children will experience new and exciting
things they cannot do at home.2. Compassion: Children get a chance to see different
social and economic lifestyles. It gives them an appreciation for what they are blessed with and compassion for others.
3. Education: Traveling gives them an opportunity to experience different cultures and learn their history.
4. Flexibility: Travel is not a perfect science and you need to be flexible if something is out of your control. It teaches children to go with the flow.
5. Memories: The memories you create with your grandchildren will stay with both you and them forever.
6. Independence: Traveling helps kids become independent. Let them help you with small tasks in the planning stage. Have them learn some of the history of where you are going, let them see where the location is on a map, let them pick out some activities and adventures they would like to partake in while on vacation.
7. Self-discovery: You will be amazed at what children learn about themselves through travel. They will discover what interests them, where their favorite places are, and opportunities to try new foods. This may help develop confidence in them and in who they are, and the person they will become.
When adults think back at their childhood, they are not going to remember that shiny toy you gave them that was the craze. They will remember the moments and experiences you shared with them through travel.

The Origin of Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day, February 2, is a popular tradition in the United States. The tradition has its roots in Candlemas Day (February 2), an ancient festival from the days of early Christians in Europe. It marks the midpoint of winter, halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Around this time, farmers needed to know when to plant their crops so they tried to predict whether there would be an early spring or if winter would linger. The weather proverbs express the idea that a bright and sunny Candlemas means there is more winter to come. A wet, stormy Candlemas means that the worst of winter is over, and rain would thaw out the fields for planting.According to an old German proverb:“The badger peeps out of his hole on Candlemas Day, If he finds snow, he walks abroad,But if he sees the sun shining he draws back into his hole.”
The Germans adopted the idea from the Roman legions and concluded that if the sun made an appearance on Candlemas Day, the hedgehog would cast a shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter, which they determined was the length of the second winter. Pennsylvania’s earliest settlers were Germans, and they found groundhogs in great numbers in many areas of the state. They thought the groundhog resembled the European hedgehog, a most intelligent animal in their opinion and decided that if the sun did appear on February 2, the wise groundhog would see its shadow and hurry back into its underground home for another six weeks of winter.
Groundhog Day is very important in Pennsylvania, and there are many festivities happening there. You may want to check out the Groundhog Wine Festival that takes place on February 2 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. It is a very popular wine tasting event represented by about 40 vendors and includes entertainment. Information can be found at www.visitclearfieldcounty.org. You can sip a glass of wine and wait for “Phil.”

Restaurant ReviewThe Old Causeway Inn
1201 East Bay AveManahawkin
This is a very popular restaurant at the end of the mainland in Manahawkin. It is open for lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch and has a happy hour that goes from 3pm to 6pm in the bar room 7 days a week. It is open year round, and they will take reservations for parties of 6 or more for lunch or dinner any day of the week. Live entertainment is featured on the weekends, and a schedule can be found on their social media site.
The OC, as it’s known locally, is casual and features seafood that is sourced locally as much as possible. They are particularly noted for their hand-shucked oysters that are prepared a variety of ways including fried, fire roasted and on top of deviled eggs. The mussels in shallot wine sauce or prepared with chorizo, lime and chipotle butter are also very popular. We have eaten there a few times for lunch and dinner and were very satisfied with our meals. We have had the burgers, lobster roll, wood-fired NY strip steak, shrimp and grits and crab cakes. The shrimp and grits were deliciously prepared with a diced tomato bacon sauce and white cheddar jalapeno grits garnished with fried green tomatoes. A variety of sauces are offered with the steaks. Dinner can get pricey because everything is a la carte including all the sides.
Their very creative cocktail menu changes each season and 20 types of beer are on tap along with a good selection of wines.
This is a busy restaurant, particularly on the weekends and every day in the summer, so be prepared to wait at times unless you arrive on the early side for dinner. I would also mention that it can be very noisy, so perhaps a lunch visit or earlier dinner would be better for some.
