Distinguished Alumni Join Benchers

The UW Law School BenchersSociety has been called a groupof the Law School's "best

friends," whose financial support helpsthe School to maintain its excellentfaculty, student body, and programs.

The Benchers Society was formedin 1963 by a group of dedicatedalumni, spearheaded by Robert Curry'53 and David Beckwith '52.Membership was by invitation onlyand limited to 100 distinguishedalumni who pledged an annual con-tribution of $100 to support a discre-tionary fund for the Dean. The fundwas conceived to increase private sup-port for student scholarships andloans, lectures by distinguished mem-bers of the bar and teaching profes-

sion, and important student activitiessuch as moot court competitions.

The original letter announcingformation of the Benchers Societyexplained that a "Bencher" inEngland is a senior barrister who hasbeen selected to be a member of thegoverning body of his Inn of Court. To be a Bencher in England is a signof honor, authority, and dedication tolegal education.

Since the Benchers Society wasfounded, the organization haschanged but the purpose remains thesame: Benchers are still invited tomembership, but now the invitationis in recognition of a history of extra-ordinary financial support of the LawSchool. Without exception, the

Benchers remain a distinguishedgroup, both by achievement and bytheir willingness to support theSchool with annual unrestricted con-tributions.

Benchers who contribute annuallyat levels of $500 and higher earnadmittance into groups named afterthree historic UW Law School deans:the George Young Circle ($500 to$999); the Harry Richards Club($1,000 to $2,499); and the LloydGarrison Society ($2,500 and above.).

If you are interested in learningmore about the Benchers Society, contact the Law School's Director ofDevelopment, Chris Richards, at608/263-5494.

Three Historic Deans Honored

Harry S. Richards became Dean ofthe Law School in 1903 at the age of34, and remained in that capacityuntil his death in 1929. Richardsconverted the School to the casemethod of instruction, raisedentrance requirements, and increasedthe faculty, recruiting several profes-sors who were to leave their mark onAmerican legal education. He hasbeen credited with making the OWLaw School into a recognized profes-sional school and with instituting the"law in action" tradition.

During his tenure, a chapter ofthe order of the Coif was established, the Wisconsin Law Review was found-ed (1920), and the tradition of theannual Cane Parade began.

Richards, born in an Iowa logcabin, was a Phi Beta Kappa graduateof the University of Iowa and anhonor graduate of Harvard LawSchool. He had taught at Iowa LawSchool and edited a casebook beforehis arrival at OW.

Lloyd K. Garrison, Dean of theLaw School from 1932 to 1942, con-tinued fostering Law and Societyinterdisciplinary studies at Wisconsin, when legal education was dominatednationally by scholars who producedtraditional casebooks. Garrison advo-cated original faculty research intothe interaction of law and society.Research outside the boundaries ofreported cases and statute books wasthen a new concept. The impact ofthis idea, and of the faculty recruitedby Garrison to build courses and pro-grams based on this "law in action"concept, was felt throughout thenation. This approach is still copiedtoday.

Garrison, who was born in NewYork City in 1897, received his LL.B.degree from Harvard in 1922. Hewas admitted to the New York StateBar in 1923 and practiced in NewYork City until moving to Wisconsinto become Dean in 1932. After aproductive ten years in Madison, heleft to serve as counsel and executivedirector of the National War LaborBoard. Later, he became a partner inthe New York firm of Paul, Weiss,Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.Garrison died in 1991.

George H. Young made essentialcontributions to both the physicaland the academic character of theLaw School. Under his administra-tion, a modern law quadrangle wascompleted, and both the faculty andthe student body doubled in size. AsDean, he would ask individual facultymembers, "What can I do to helpyou achieve your goal?" His approachwas to build a strong faculty and thengive them the support needed toachieve important teaching andresearch goals.

Young was born in Elkhorn,Wisconsin in 1915, and received hisLL.B. from the OW Law School in1941. He practiced with the firm ofStroud, Stebbins, Wingert & Youngin Madison from 1941 to 1950. Hebecame associate professor at the OWLaw School in 1950, professor of lawin 1953, and Dean of the Law Schoolin 1957. He served as Dean until1968, when he returned to teaching.Young died in 1981.
