BankNewport Board Chair Peter Capodilupo and
President and CEO Sandra J. Pattie
ensure the Bank’s legacy of support
to Newport Hospital
“BankNewport’s support to Newport Hospital is indeed keeping it in the family—the bank’s
customers are the hospital’s patients and vice versa. Newport Hospital is a valuable resource that touches the lives of so many, with the focus of the Bank’s gifts
as a legacy to the community which we are all a part of.”
–Peter Capodilupo, BankNewport Board Chair
Dear Friend of Newport Hospital,
One of the many things that make
Newport Hospital special is our unique
connection to the Aquidneck Island
community. Our deep-rooted
commitment to providing high
quality, personalized care has built
a bond of trust with our patients
and our community at large. When
you walk through our doors, you know you have access to
an expert team of doctors and caregivers and advanced,
comprehensive care across a range of health needs. By sharing
ideas, information and resources, we are constantly working
to advance the services available to our patients and improve
the health of our community.
The theme of community runs throughout this issue
of Benefactor. We are proud to spotlight BankNewport, an
institution that shares our commitment to Aquidneck Island.
Our mutual passion for helping others has resulted in a
partnership that benefits our community immeasurably.
And of course, BankNewport’s commitment to corporate
philanthropy and ongoing generous support of Newport
Hospital has greatly impacted the award-winning facility
we are today.
You’ll read about Newport Hospital’s laser-like focus
on recruiting new physicians; our successful launch of a new
community lecture series; and the addition of our first Nurse
Navigator for Newport Hospital’s Comprehensive Cancer
Center, made possible by funds raised by generous donors
during last year’s Swinging on a Star gala. These are all
important steps that allow us to serve our community in new
and expanded ways. We also share with you the heartwarming
story of how Newport Hospital’s Emergency Department
saved a soon-to-be new dad’s life and delivered his baby boy,
all in a matter of a few weeks. And as we do each year, we
recognize our 2014 honor roll of donors.
We are grateful to have you as part of our donor
community. With your support, we can continue to deliver
the excellent, award-winning care that you have come to expect.
And we look forward to sharing more news about continued
service line developments in the next issue of Benefactor,
including a range of new and enhanced services we’ll soon
be offering to patients.
Best Wishes,
Crista Durand President
ankNewport and Newport Hospital never lose sight of the
continued loyalty, trust, and support the community has placed in them
since the 1800s. As a community bank and a community provider, both
organizations share a unique and valuable history of significant growth,
changes to infrastructure, and tireless employees who have served
generations of families from Newport and the surrounding communities.
The Savings Bank of Newport, as it was known at the time, opened
its door for business in a private home at 2 Pelham Street in Newport in 1819,
and similarly, Newport Hospital was founded and funded by Newporters
in 1873 on land that was donated for that purpose. Both have been true
partners in meeting the needs of the community for a very long time.
Since becoming Newport Hospital’s first Vision 2001 Capital
Campaign corporate sponsor in March 1998, with a leadership gift of
$100,000, BankNewport’s support of the hospital has been unwavering.
The impact of their generosity can be seen and felt on a daily basis, in
practically every corner of the hospital. From the outpatient laboratory
and modernization of two inpatient medical/surgical units in the Turner
Building, to renovations
of the adult medical/
surgical acute inpatient
rooms and the extensive
expansion of the Inter-
ventional Radiology
Program, BankNewport

has been an invaluable partner and advocate for Newport Hospital.
The Bank also proudly supports various hospital events that help
raise essential funds and awareness in support of the hospital’s
overall mission.
Beyond offering financial support for growth and stability
of the hospital, BankNewport’s Board of Directors and manage-
ment team believe that corporate responsibility is also demonstrated
through leadership and volun-
teerism, and they lead by example.
BankNewport President and
CEO, Sandra J. Pattie has been
a Newport Hospital Board of
Governors member for over
20 years and now serves on the
Newport Hospital Foundation
Board of Trustees. BankNewport
Board Chair Peter Capodilupo is
also the Chairman of the Newport
Hospital Foundation Board.
“BankNewport’s support
to Newport Hospital is indeed
keeping it in the family—the
bank’s customers are the hospital’s
patients and vice versa. Newport
Hospital is a valuable resource
that touches the lives of so many,
with the focus of the Bank’s gifts
as a legacy to the community
which we are all a part of,”
says Peter Capodilupo.
Acknowledging its financial
role in many hospital capital
projects, the Bank is most proud to have been witness to the
inspiring and wonderful ways that so many individuals and busi-
nesses have joined together over the years in support of Newport
Hospital—a reflection of its origins, people helping people.
“BankNewport, as a community bank, is committed to
making our communities a better place to live and work,” explains
Sandra Pattie. “The Bank’s patronage to Newport Hospital is
a natural extension of our core values,
to ensure that the best medical facilities
are available locally and throughout
our state. Through volunteerism and
monetary support to Newport Hospital,
BankNewport encourages good health
practices for its bank family and
our community.”
BankNewport’s corporate culture
of philanthropy encourages branch staff
and their customers to get involved in
giving back to Newport Hospital. In
2001, 26 bank employees volunteered
their time to promote awareness of
Newport Hospital’s Vision 2001 Capital
Campaign and brought in an additional
$250,000 in pledges and donations from
local businesses. On designated “dress
down days” BankNewport employees
can dress casual in exchange for making
a donation to selected local organiza-
tions. Newport Hospital’s Vanderbilt
Rehabilitation Center Survivorship
Training and Rehabilitation (the STAR
Program®) has been a beneficiary
of this program.

“We are grateful to have BankNewport as such a committed corporate donor to Newport Hospital. It’s wonderful to have a community partner that not only
shares our mission for serving those in the Newport and surrounding areas, but that so actively and generously participates in our philanthropic endeavors
to bring the highest quality care to the community.” –Crista Durand, President, Newport Hospital

hristina Cerenzia was in her 37th week of pregnancy when
she found herself en route to the Emergency Department (ED)
at Newport Hospital. Terrified, the mom-to-be found herself
thinking, “I can’t go into labor…not now. Please let them
help Justin.”
Justin is Christina’s husband. He is the head coach of
St. George’s hockey team in Middletown, RI and he had been
hit in the head by a flying hockey puck. It was the third period of
the game. The team was short a man on a penalty and Justin was
talking to a player on the bench. Out of nowhere, a puck struck
him just above his right temple. Knocked from the bench, the
team doctor and trainer rushed to his side as Justin lay there,
bleeding profusely and unable to sit up. Justin recalls knowing
he was in bad shape, “I knew I needed help fast and needed
an ambulance.” When the EMTs arrived, Justin told them,
“My wife is nine months pregnant … please get me help fast!”
The ambulance brought Justin to Newport Hospital.
The combination of his bleeding ear canal and location of the
temple injury meant that
Justin was seriously
injured. The head CT
scan confirmed a skull
fracture of the temporal
bone as well as an
epidural hematoma,
which is a brain bleed.
After Physician
Assistant Jerry Ferrera
reviewed the scan results
with the radiologist, Jerry
told attending ED physi-
cian Ben Hodgson, MD,
they had a patient with
a traumatic brain injury
that needed to be trans-
ferred to a trauma center
where neurosurgeons
could release the pressure in his brain
and stop the bleed. Minutes were critical
and Justin was quickly
deteriorating. Dr. Hodgson
prepared him for the critical
care transfer—administering
medication to reduce the pain
and brain swelling as well as
preventatively intubating
him to protect his airway.
“I just sat there watching his heart rate
drop thinking I can’t go into labor, I just want
my husband to be okay,” remembers Christina,
“but I didn’t understand just how severe the
situation was until they told me they might have
to drill a hole in his head to relieve the pressure
on his brain and that I should call his parents
in Pennsylvania.”
For Justin, quick thinking and fast action on the part of
emergency staff at Newport Hospital was critical in saving his life.
“If his initial arrival
at the hospital, his scan, the
reading of the results, or his
transfer had been delayed,
significant brain damage, or
death, could have occurred,”
explains Jerry. Dr. Hodgson
adding, “From the nurses
to the pharmacy staff
who were instrumental
in getting us the medica-
tions we needed at lightning
speed, this was an excellent
example of team work.”
Justin’s post-operative
recovery impressed neuro-
surgeons and he was released
from Rhode Island Hospital
three days after they
performed a craniotomy to reduce the pressure
and repair the ruptured artery in his skull.

Happy Endings and Beginnings Possible.

A Position Made Possible
Thanks to our Generous Donor Community
n January 2015, thanks to the generous support of blitz and auction donors at the 2014 Newport Hospital Swinging on a Star gala, the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) at Newport Hospital welcomed Patricia “Patty” Sousa-Cooper, RN, BSN, OCN as its first Nurse Navigator.
The concept of “patient navigation” (PN) was founded and pioneered by New York physician, Dr. Harold Freeman during the 1990s in an effort to pair patients with “navigators” who could help guide them through the maze of the health care system during cancer treatment. The CCC at Newport Hospital has taken the PN concept and created a Nurse Navigator whose role is to support the varying needs of cancer patients on Aquidneck Island with the expertise of an oncology certified nurse.
In this new role, Patty, previously an oncology treatment nurse, helps patients overcome barriers they might face during their treatment. As the patient’s liaison between their medical team and social work, the goal of the navigator is for every patient to have what they need for a successful experience. From ensuring they have transportation in order to receive their treatment on time, to educating them about the many medications they’re taking, to dealing with insurance issues, and helping patients find social and emotional support in the community, the navigator is a patient’s ultimate resource—just one call away.
“As a treatment nurse, you hear about patient struggles as you get to know them over the sometimes lengthy appointments. Facilitating access to the resources that are available can be time consuming and the Navigator’s role helps to free the other oncology nurses to concentrate on the demanding aspects of treatment,” explains Patty.
Patty has been a nurse at Newport Hospital since 1998 and joined the CCC at Newport Hospital in 2015. Her services as Nurse Navigator are available to all patients treated at the CCC at Newport Hospital. She is Newport Hospital’s first, and currently only, Nurse Navigator.

“It was such a relief to end our stressful month of December on such a positive note with Benno’s arrival in such a warm and inviting place.
Newport Hospital was there for us during one of our most difficult days, as well as one of the most joyous!”
Justin with his son Benno
“We give patients the strength to get through and help them make the best of each day.
Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be frightening and I am happy to be able to help our patients navigate through the often murky waters that
lie ahead. Having a contact person to turn to for answers is another part of the healing process.” — Patty Sousa-Cooper, RN, BSN, OCN

Two weeks later, with Justin still healing from his traumatic brain injury, it was now
Christina’s turn for a trip to Newport Hospital. Going into labor in the evening, the couple
found themselves back at the Emergency Department, but this time with happy anticipation.
“It was nice to see the familiar and friendly faces at check-in when we arrived,” says Christina
of their quick entry to the ED before being whisked down the hall to the Noreen Stonor Drexel
Birthing Center. Just an hour and a half later, seven pound, 11 ounce baby Benno arrived!
“I really felt a connection with the nurses, every step of the way,” says Christina.
