The Research Data LifecycleIn2004,JacobsandHumphreyprovidedavaluabledescriptionofdatamanagement:“Dataarchivingisaprocess,notanendstatewheredataissimplyturnedovertoarepositoryattheconclusionofastudy.”1Aresearchdatalifecyclemodelisausefulmeansforthinkingaboutthephasesandworkinvolvedindatamanagement.TheInter-universityConsortiumforPoliticalandSocialResearch(ICPSR)isadisciplinarydatarepositorythatprovidessuchamodel,whichisadaptedandillustratedhere.Gooddatamanagement,asICPSR’smodelsuggests,actuallybeginsbeforearesearchercollectsanydata.
